I wonder why someone would pronounce an abbreviation of "Graphics Interchange Format" in that manner; I guess it is down to the individual. A case similar to the pro-nun-ciation... I mean pro-noun, pro-nounshiyasion of MySQL, Sega, Hyundai and Deus Ex...

Considering it's latin and not some abbreviation open to interpretation, there's only one way to pronounce it. Day-us Ex! (I also happened to take latin in school)

As for GIF, it's a soft G! Like giraffe.

One of my friends pronounced it "derz ex". I personally say the same as you.

Valid point. I was just wondering why he chose to make it silent, no big deal. Is there a benefit? Who in the world does it benefit to not pronounce the 'g' differently than the g in the word git; for an abbreviation for 'Graphics Interchange Format'? Humans are interesting.

Edit: APNG kicks GIF's ass!

He lives in sweden so its probably "us" like "oos" (oo like in cool) which would be correct.

Quote: "Day-us Ex! (I also happened to take latin in school)"

Correct, even though it suggests an american accent. ...which doesn't matter since its a dead language.

My father is a genius in english pronounciations, he pronounces pay pal like "pay paaal" and can't help but pronounce every new english word he comes across in french

I probably keep saying "G if" ..sorry, but language evolves that way, in the end what people say will remain and be correct

Medic language now

Yep, correct.

Also, not offtopic, but I want to admit how english transcription of asian (chinese for example) languages is not even close.

You take that back! I refuse to believe I spent time sleepin.. err studying something completely useless!

Quote: "He lives in sweden so its probably "us" like "oos" (oo like in cool) which would be correct."

I live in Ohio... And 'oos' sounds canadian to me.

As for GIF, I'm trying to think of an english rule that would support the soft G sound, but when I do I find an exception that can negate it. Giraffe is soft, Gorilla is hard. Both have very similar consonant structure. One could argue the 'e' on the end makes the difference, but then you have words like Gore.

But who knows, maybe it's pronounced IF and the G is silent like Gnarl?

jiff because softer sounds are more pleasant!

also when speaking an acronym as a word, individual letters often do not take the pronunciaction of the parent word. lol for instance. the o in out is oww in the parent word but ahh in the acro-word

I think if the G stands for Graphical it should be pronounced the same way unless the acronym spells something that suits the softer J better like maybe:
Actual Graphical Extract (AGE)

I'm well aware of how many words have a soft G it just makes no sense to use the soft J in this instance.

If it's Graphical it's a G...

I don't think that even the creator is allowed to decide on how we use our logic.

It is to me about how our neurons will connect to bad ideas. I don't like bad ideas connecting together with good ideas. I don't allow even the word 'pull' in my mind to connect to things like a chain. So I'm not going to allow someone to connect Gif with a 'J' to neurons in my mind that are in touch with Giraffe, when the logic is that the word Graphical is embellished in the meaning.

It's the other way around. We teach the creator of Gif to realise his mistake in his logic. We ignore him.

No. It makes perfect sense that you are tied to your own thoughts, so don't wire up your own personality to mistakes in logic.

Word - the creator can tell us how he thinks it should be used, or what kind of logic he thinks applies, but not "how it is used - period."

Jif used to be a cleaning product from the UK, then it was renamed Cif because europeans couldn't say Jif.

Gif is not Jif. You wouldn't say "I got a Jift for my birthday!" lol
