During the weekend of March 3rd and 4th we are calling on all community members to join the TGC team in making some silly and fun red nose games.

In the United Kingdom each year the BBC and many comedy actors join forces to raise money for children in the UK and Africa. We want to help this cause by running this weekend game making event.

The plan is to do the following:

* Create fun Retro/puzzle/casual/fun games with the focus on using a Red Nose
* All games to be for 3+ year olds
* Less than 10 megs in size (zipped) - ideally as small as possible.
* Coded in any language you like

All games will then be compiled into a big download and we will then charge $10 a copy (or if you want you can donate more). All monies raised will be donated to the charity.

Please post here if you want to be involved, it'll be fun!!!

For info on Red nose day, see:

http://www.rednoseday.com/

Some game ideas:

* Pong (with a red nose)
* Connect 4 (red and yellow noses)
* Red Nose invaders
* Nose command (missile command)
* Nose Golf
* Super Nose World!
* Pac Nose
* Tetnose (tetris with noses)

If you want to do one of these games, post below stating your taking the idea. Also, if you have better ideas let me know and I'll add them to the list. If we do it this way we'll avoid too many games being the same.

Remember, the noses are like big red balls, so they are perfect for bouncing in games.

Hmmm interesting. So all we have to do is have this red nose in it? Shouldn't be too hard, then again with me you never know what might happen.

Yes, that's the red nose! By having our event before the 16th we will be able to raise money before the 16th and hopefully present a cheque to some local press.

You know I have a nice pairs game that I've never released (made for a friend), would be easy to stick in some cool pictures for kids and is really easy to play. Count me in, sounds like a laugh.

I'm sure I could chuck something together for this, and I worry about the dolphins. Count me in.

Does all of the $10 for each purchase go towards charity?

Actually, I've just reread the sentence after that. Nvm!

Question: Are the games we're making going to be small mini-games seeing as they are going to go into a large collection of games?

I'm working on a game already, woo!

edit: (Yet another question) can we put advertising in the game? e.g. Click here to visit my site...

Also, how is it all being pulled together?

I am still an extreme novice but I was planning on doing something simple for my 3 year old to help him learn to use the mouse. This will both be good for me and for him as it would be very simple.

Well, it is not as simple as I thought. Besides the terrible graphic of a butterfly net, here is the pro log to the problem.

I have a bouncing red nose on a sky/cloud background. There is a large butterfly net that has a handle which is controlled by the mouse. The object is to get the net on the ball and click the mouse button.

OK, the following is my understanding of collisions obtained from a DarkBasic Pro Textbook.

There are two types of collision that can be detected. A spite collision and a sprite hit. The sprite collision uses the bounding rectangle of the sprite. So no matter what the part of the rectangle overlaps, there will be a collision detected. However, the sprite hit is supposed to ignore the transparent color pixels and only recognizes when the non-transparent pixels of the two sprites come into contact with one another.

Well, it doesn't work that way unfortunately. To me this is a bug! Here is the problem.

The net is a large rectangle. It has a handle and therefore there is a huge amount of space right underneath the net along the length of the handle. It is all transparent in that area and so all you see is sky to the left of the handle and underneath the net. So, it would seem that if one uses sprite hit that the ball could actually be in that area and not return a 1 for a hit because it is in a transparent area of the net. But that is not true. If I click the mouse button with the ball underneath the net and not touching either the net or the handle to the right, it still returns a 1.

The way the textbook reads this should not be happening. It should be ignoring the transparent area of the net even though it is within the bounded rectangle of the sprite.

OK, I realize that I can create code to see what the x,y positions are for both sprites and calculate the area that I want the collision to take place before I return manually in another value a sprite hit. For only two sprites no big deal but what if there are a couple of dozen sprites? Like airplanes and missiles? I really don't want the missile to blow up a plane when in actuality it misses the place but goes through the bounding rectangles indicate a hit despite using sprite hit rather than sprite collision.

If you can't understand the written explanation, I will show you an image of the ball under the net and give you all the code. Not much code anyway as it is very simple.

The idea:
Who watched the advert Ear Sir! I was thinking of a game where u play as any of the characters in there but not really them but u race against eachother and who ever wins plays the sound "EAR SIR!" and if u lose "Get off those ridicoulus ears!"

I guess I'll just forget it.

I know I shouldn't have posted the problem here but I wasn't able to delete it after I had postted it -- was planning on moving it to another forum/thread -- so here it stays. Since sprite hit doesn't work the way it is supposed to work (at least as far as I can tell), I'll quit this simple red nose project and do it a little differently for my grandson.

Its very simple...

Make it an object and then set in an action that if its leftclicked the game is won.

EDIT:

There are many tutorials on it,the first tutorial on the Game Maker page shows you how to deal with your problem.

I guess in spite of my frustration and disappointment regarding the sprite hit, I decided to use a cross hair instead. This made it programmable for sure. I don't see where to upload it either so I have it available for download. Will check back to see if there are further instructions.

This is a game for 2 1/2 to 4 years old. Hopefully it can help them with using the mouse and their hand/eye coodination.

Someone stole Bozo's red nose. The last he heard, it was floating around in the sky. He would like help in catching it.

It begins with a cartoon picture of bozo the clown with a black nose. Once you catch the red nose, the scene will return to the picture of bozo with his red nose back. There is music and a red nose icon for the exe file. It is only 3.52 MB.

This isn't sophisticated but I believe it is worthy of play for the toddlers. I know my grandson likes it.

As opposed to Highlander.

Prince, that tutorial wasn't the right thing. I mean like this:
1. I click the player.
2. He does a punching animation.
3. If nose is at the right distance then nose dies.
4. Player gets 5 points.

Flatlander, your nose game is good! (lol) although the spped goes like this:
slow
fast
slow
stop
slow
etc, etc, etc.
Why does the ball stop?
