Hi Guys,

As many of you know I am not one for posting about anything other than bugs and features, but on this occasion I am looking for recommendations from grass roots DBP users on what their favourite DBP game has been. I am compiling a new installer for the latest Dark Basic Pro download and I want to throw in some of the best DBP games produced by the community from the last few years.

We are looking for the smaller games of course as we don't want to inflate the downloadable size too much. We have a great language and backed by a monstrous amount of resources but I feel new users to DBP would benefit the most from playing a few finished games.

If have a recommendation, post it here with a link to the game/site/author and we will do the rest. Thanks again and I wish you the best in your current projects!

I drink tea, and in my spare time I write software.

Hi Lee,

One of my favorite games was that Break-In Community project..

http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=99930&b=8

go back and try it, I'm sure you'll agree it was a fun project/game. Best of all it was built by the community.

I want those Community projects back! Waaaaah, Waaahhh.. Mommy they took away my community projects! Waaaaah, Waaaahhh!

LoL.

Cheers!

i think the best ever was Room War, although i don't know if you could still find the code for it.
it is in the showcase, by the way...

I second that. Room War was amazing, and I never knew the code was publicly available. I shall have to look for that...

The code for Room War is available and I think I still have it somewhere on my backup HDD, but the problem is that the game was created using one of the early versions of DBPro (back in 2004) and to my knowledge will simply not compile without heavy changes on DBPro 7.4.

Here is the link: http://darkbasicpro.thegamecreators.com/?m=showcase_view&i=221

By the way does any one knows what happened to the author of this game? Guess when he received the Alienware PC went to something bigger...

@Olby:
Really? I'd still be interested to see it. If it's not too much trouble, could you email it to me or something?

Sure, it is still available on TGC files server: http://files.thegamecreators.com/newsletter/roomwar_source.zip

Returning back to topic I must add that all those Star Wraith games show excellent use of the language, tho as far as I remember they where coded in DBC or am I wrong?

Thanks

I would assume you're correct, as the first of them seems to have been written in 1999. I have no idea when DBPro first came out though... I'll bet Lee knows!

DBPro was something like 2002-2003, Starwraith was out long before DBPro, and is written in a somewhat extended version of DBClassic.

I'd say Mono and Duo are musts, so much fun and people will like to see the professional finish it has, nice menus and sounds and everything. Plus the obvious one that they don't rely on detailed graphics, sends out the message that it's ok if your player ship looks like a power button, as long as the game is fun .

The demo of Carnage would be quite neat as well, although it is pretty graphic, you might have concerns about age groups etc - but for a fast action game that looks and plays great, Carnage is about the best I've seen.

Some puzzle games would be pretty handy as well, like Wordtrix and half the entries from the old Puzzle Game compo. I think that DBPro makes an excellent platform for casual games, I'm surprised that more people don't use it for that purpose.

I compiled Nox yesterday after seeing it listed here but found the collision to be off, anyone know offhand why? I glanced through the code and didn't see anything that would lead to the issue. perhaps I need to use an older version of Sparky's collision?

I also think the Dark Noobs Project 2: RPG is a great example, albeit unfinished as yet (/pokes and prods community to pick up the game and finish it)

I like anything by binary moon. (Mono, Duo, Duotrix, and echoes)
3D Bang Bang by Mobiius (lol)

That's pretty much it. I don't really play DBPro games like I Used to.

Your signature has been erased by a mod because we're sadistic losers with nothing better to do. (joke)

yes, for some reason the newer sparky collision and dbpro version break it.

Anything from the Coding challenges thread would be good as a side. They are quick and dirty and require absolutely no media. I have not been following it for a few years so if anyone knows any good games or demos in that thread it would be a great starting point for new users.

Something really catchy that makes people stop and think about the meaning of life and say to themselves "My but thats clever"

thanks kaedroho But the spaghetti-source of stick suicide 2 is definitly not a good example for structured, good code . The amount of flying stickman-limbs and blood could also be a problem

Probably just reflecting the game-play in the code right?

I second the notion! I was around when those came out, and they were fabulous and very inspiring! It definitely motivated me to achieve the same level of polish, knowing that it could be done.

(in order)

Duo
3D Bubble Bobble
Mono

3D Bubble Bobble is what got me into DBPro, I think it might have been made in DBC but i'm not sure.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Sometimes I get so involved with coding I often miss the cool things that get created in DBP

You should include some of the third party plugins with darkbasic, sparky's, IanM's plugins, instead of making new users have to crawl around the forums looking for them.
