Phobia is finally finished and avaible for download!

Phobia - The Fear of The Darkness is a first game from Jonez Games.
Phobia isn't very long game but it's full of investigations and searching.

Music and some of the sound are from Penumbra Overture, Black Plague

some of the comments of Phobia: The Fear of the Darkness(from Youtube):

Quote: "The first few minutes of the game lulled me into a sense of false security. I literally shouted out loud in fear when things changed!"

Quote: "This game is really good

This game is scarier than Fear and Penumbra in my opinion cause this one actually made me jump and im not easily scared
"

Quote: "you're goin' to s**t bricks when you're going to see the zombies. I can't play this game even for 15mins"

The game was not bad, but due some collision errors, i didn't liked it, some of the walls were not seamless, and i think it had too many rooms. altough nice job

What errors? I have testet it in three diffrent computer and everything looks nice.
And the manor dont have too many rooms. It gives more free movement.

Yeah thats your opinion. But this game is no like other FPSC games.
This is investigation and searching in big manor. You spend whole game in the manor and got keys in the diffrent rooms and you have to go in most of the rooms in the game. And the game have a map of up and downstairs so that would be easier. And when you play the game a while you remember the whole manor where are the all the rooms, two stairs to the upstairs, library, kitchen and all.
Remember to check To do list by pressing "O".
Read the manual in games folder.
Thanks for the comment!

@Bloody James:
He created it I guess! It's quiet simple... I've been using it myself on a game that I'm developing. But I've been busy with university, can't do much right now.

@Jonez Games:

Oh man! What a nice game! No shooter style, like all Zombie crappy FPSC games I see around here! I'm bored and tired of those games.
It's good to have someone creating different games!

Thanks! Yeah, i was thinking to do something different. This game really is no like other fpsc games. free movement on the manor and nothing to protect yourself against the monsters.

Hi Jonez!!! I just wanted to get on here and put in my two cents. I haven't finished your game yet but what I've seen so far is great. Nice work with the notes, map, objectives. I feel the layout of the mansion is good. You would have to be very careful in using the Penumbra music though. No use opening yourself up to legal action. I feel you have a great game. Its a very tense play and I have jumped a couple times good stuff. In the first level you have done more with very little lightng that most people do with lots of lighting. Something for all of us developers to think about. I will post on here and let you know what I thought of the overall game. Way to make a game and post it!!!
I love scary games so to impress me you've done well!!

Yeah thanks! The game is made in 2-3 months not in full time
working trough but it took time. Im really interested hearing how
long it takes to finish. Because its not really long but it have
lot of investigation and avoiding monsters. Waiting for your
review when you have finished.
and i maybe do Phobia 2 later with X10 but i will not use Penumbra
music cause im going to sell it maybe. Its going to be longer with
bigger mansion and maybe i put some guns with low ammo and
diffrent enemies. Now im doing an another game(dont know yet if i
even going to do it. But ill let all know if im going to do it)
Its going to be some kind of action\sneaking game.
Really waiting for your review when you have finished and others reviwes!
Thanks!

Have just downloaded and started playing. So far I'm very impressed. I like searching around the house, it's all very eerie.

I really like your cutscene at the beginning of the game.

My only criticism would be the wall texture not being seemless, it makes it all look a little strange, but maybe that is the effect you were going for?

Looking forward to seeing more games from you

That's fair enough, but if it detracts from peoples experience then you should really consider adding different methods of lighting (like a flashlight?).

There is a fine line between atmosphere and playability - darkness can be creepy, but too dark (as people here are saying) and it's just annoying.

Do you mind emailing me maybe 1 or 2 in-editor screen shots of
the top floor? I've been trying to do a mansion redux for a game
based off a book and I just want to see how you laid yours out.
I'm not trying to take your idea... I would also love to buy a
Phobia 2 if it comes out!

Email me at: astekgames@hotmail.com

Thanks

There is a map in hte game of the top floor.

But the game was awesome! Maby some flashlight in the first level or something like that. But I understand why it is dark, and if you get to the second level it kinda fells right too. And I love the searching and everything. The nightmare sequence was great, teh walking scare thing is over used, but it still got me! And the room, it was too freaky, didn't want to go in there! I love all the nightmare things! I should propably try one too. But I am stuck at the 4th level (the level after the nightmare level), if I press "o", it says to check out the room, I go to the room, but there is nothing. Also the map says there should be a bedroom next to the library place, but there is no door .

I love the retexturing work you've done with this, totally took alot of effort to do that, put that noise effect on everysingle texture. and talking of textures: The one wall texture with the Paint.NET effect, wich name I can't remember, under cloud effect, looks weird and it's undeamless... But it's a very good game! With a little polishing it would definetly be a BOTB game!

I found the floor glitch mentioned before. When you investigate the shelves going down to the cellar in the first level you can fall thru it and die where the table is close to the shelves. Unfortunately I quit there since I got a bit tired of aimlessly walking around and not knowing your sitting right on top of a key is a bit frustrating. I would suggest putting a hint when you get close to keys or maybe auto pickup. Overall it seemed quite original and I will have a go at it again soon.

Great work!

Well, first of all, I`m not english and my articulation is very limited. (I use to cover it up with loads of swear words...so you`re warned )

Quote: " "The Story" "

The Story isn' t that bad. Even though it would be nice if you would have added a few more details about the main character and that job... but still its a solid ghost story. Enough for a game.

55 %

Quote: " "Overall Presentation" "

The installation procedure was okay, even though I wasn't able to see some of the checkboxes due to the black colored background. But nevermind! Nobody really cares about that anyway

Title Screen and loading screens where good and fitted well together and to the game

75%

Quote: " " Game Mechanics " "

The Game has new damage huds... I appreciate people trying to give their games personal touches...but honesty, the original one was better. There are actually no HUD's and no hint on how healthy your character is...

The good things where the interactive environement and the documents. I didn' t like the fact that you have to pickup keys with the enter button...but the "objective" screen was a nice touch.

65%

Quote: "" Gameplay ""

The Ideas where good...even though running around through the house was a bit annoying after some time... But the little riddles where well placed and realistic/reasonable. I really like all the work you putted in there. Even though you could have improved the levelchanges which seem to come a lil bit too unexpected and maybe a little cutscene that you fall asleep/ get knocked unconsinous...because I really had no idea what was actually going on as I dreamed...even though it was nicely done.

Okay: I really disliked the ennemies. The basic idea of escaping ghosts is brilliant...but, I always saw them standing around and I almost never woke one of them up...if I did, I was able to lock them in a room in a few seconds. They where absolutely not dangerous and killed the good athmosphere.

55%
Quote: " " Level-Design " "

Okay, everyone told you that, but those walltexture wasn' t seamless. Other than that: I liked it. It wasn' t great, but athmospheric, well fitting. The Manor had reasonable/realistic roomplacements and a good...but too frequent...choice of models.

Some let downs where "floor = roof" faults etc. More to see below!

The lightmapping was alright. Not brilliant, some times a bit too dark, but bugfree and fitting.

45%

Quote: " "Graphics" "

Okay: I liked the way you retextured everything to give the game a unique somewhat cartoonish look. It fitted very well together and you used a good colorpalette. Some textures seemed low quality, but it didn' t bring down the game. I appreciate how you managed that the dynamic objects seemed to be static / fitted together with lightmapping etc. I really didn't notice these dynamic shelves to move around etc...big thumps up for that.

The ennemies wheren' t detailed but looked ok.

55%

Quote: " " Sounds " "

Stolen/Ripped Sound effects do not get any marks...even though you used them good.

10%

Quote: " " Notes " "

-Those toonish videos where a nice touch.

-I didn't like the endcredits... Writing your name that often seems a bit stuck up... come on! You may have had the idea and designed few textures and the leves. But still: Bond 1 made the ennemie characters, most standart material isn' t made by you, most textures are originally made by other artists, like simon benge...

- I first didn' t want to download this game cause of this [Jonez Games]. Yeah... you know, its nice if you want to make yourself a name... but just writing "Phobia - the fear of darkness" would sound way more interesting and promising than that. No offense at all, but Jonez Games sounds a bit infantile, especially since your only one person.

Quote: " " Overall Rating " "

65 % Jupp! One of the better FPSC Games. Keep up the good work!!

Quote: " Trivia/other notes "

-You are, like me, not english which you can see in the ingamedocuments filled with errors. I would suggest ask some one who speaks english to review them before you release them. I damned my girlfriend to do this for me

- I red you want to sell the sequel? I don' t like this...you won' t get richt with fpsc games and there are way too less good freeware games...so I would like you to stay on the light side (or maybe the dark side ) of free software

- I made a similar game ages ago. It was only a german beta release but it had similar gameplay and graphics and loads of ripped sounds

Quote: " Some hints and tipps "

Please get rid of such symbolism!!

Thats what everybody is talking about...not seamless =/

Watch the floor textures while editing...and yes..place these creatures so they surprise the player.

More pictures showcasing the failed ennemie placement which killed the whole concept/athmosphere/gameplay Try to spawn ennemies in dark corners from where they can attack the player without being seen first in future projects.

Yeah thanks for the review Wolf

Quote: "The Story isn' t that bad. Even though it would be nice if you would have added a few more details about the main character and that job... but still its a solid ghost story. Enough for a game.
"

Yeah i wanted to keep David unknown

Quote: "
There are actually no HUD's and no hint on how healthy your character is..."

i didnt want to add any huds to the game and you die so easy so you have to be carefull.

Quote: "but, I always saw them standing around and I almost never woke one of them up...if I did, I was able to lock them in a room in a few seconds. They where absolutely not dangerous and killed the good athmosphere.
"

Yeah i wanted to try something diffrent that you have to get close of them and try to get rid of them to get them out of the way.

Quote: "Stolen/Ripped Sound effects do not get any marks...even though you used them good."

Penumbra just have perfect horror music.

-I didn't like the endcredits... Writing your name that often seems a bit stuck up... come on! You may have had the idea and designed few textures and the leves. But still: Bond 1 made the ennemie characters, most standart material isn' t made by you, most textures are originally made by other artists, like simon benge...
"

I didnt know or remember who made those objects or textures or anything but i wanted to do end credits just like in any game. So sorry for anyone who arent in the credits.

But remember this is my very first game

And thanks for the review again wolf.

Hey, what do I do in the 4th level. The level after the nightmare. I went into the room, and in htere, nothing happened.

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
The courage to change the things that I can,
And the wisdom to know the difference.

Look the map closely and look a round the house and try to see if all rooms fit with the map

Yeah, I made the music I sent you. I tried to make something similar to what is in Penumbra, but I think I failed, LOL!
