Hi,

We've just had word back from Intel. They've agreed to loosen the 1024x600 resolution restriction, in favor of windowed applications being lesser. However applications may NOT exceed the stated 1024x600 resolution.

They do go on to say, that windowed applications may be a bit of a handy cap for anyone entering this competition. But no prejudgements are being made. Applications that effectively use the smaller resolution, and demonstrate how a lower resolution windowed application can be a bonus rather than hindrance on smaller Notebook screens, will still be judged fairly.

So the message is "we highly recommend 1024x600, however if your game really shines or makes excellent usage of the limited screen size, then your game will be judged fairly."

As posted in the other thread, why would Intel recommend 1024*600(or under, in a window) when their own guidelines mention atom netbooks that are under and above this? Like the 1600x768 and 1024x576 sizes, trying to set 1024x600 on the latter will most likely result in a crash. Doesn't it make far more sense to just say the application should use the native desktop resolution, which most of the time is 1024x600?

You might be right. But the fokes over at Intel are a clever bunch, I'd assume they have a game plan for the long term. So if they recommend 1024x600 or lower, then just stick to it.

Ultimately if you want to be super fussy about this, you're quite welcome to have an options menu where you can adjust the resolution higher if you really want too. As long as you make it clear the game supports 1024x600 without image stretching, artifacts, or anything else. Then there's no major issue is there?

Ultimately, as with any competition, the more inline with the rules you are, the less chance you have of being marked down.

If I setup my game to run at the native resolution of the device, but to letterbox/pillarbox the game which is at 1024x600, so as not to have any visual ambiguity, would this be permitted?

The game would still run at 1024x600 on netbooks, and be full screen. Anything larger would have a black border around it.

If this is ok then all is good

I've set mine up to be 1024x600 with a borderless window. On a netbook it's fullscreen, but on my PC it just takes up the center 1024x600. I can see my desktop all around it.

Whilst that is ok KISTech, there is more performance to be had out of full screen exclusive

Could you elaborate on this a little as performance is paramount.
In the past I'm sure my games have run faster when I go full screen but I did a little test on my current game and there seemed to be no difference

Oddity, have you tried it on a netbook matty, I am only speaking about second hand results here, as I haven't done the tests myself, but my source is trustworthy and sensible.

1024x600 is the rule, anyone who deviates from this does run the risk of being marked down.

But is the rule that it "must support 1024x600" or "must ALWAYS run at 1024x600" ?

In regards to exclusive full screen performance, vs desktop vs windowed.

The following tests were conducted on:

Intel Single Core 1.86ghz
2Gb RAM
Windows XP
Intel X3100 integrated graphics card with 128 shared RAM.

Windowed mode:

FPS between 41 and 50

Desktop mode:

FPS Between 214 and 221

FullDesktop mode:

FPS Between 226 and 251

So FullDesktop mode is the fastest.

Code used for this experiment was:

Continuation of tests:

All conducted on same hardware as before and FullDesktop Mode.

Textures applied to object are following.

1024x1024, FPS between 206 and 230
512x512, FPS between 206 and 229
256x256, FPS between 220 and 241
128x128, FPS between 234 and 248

My pc screen is unable to display 1024x600 using full screen so i have to use the "1024x600 window" option to make my game. Taking into consideration the slight difference that windowed and non-windowed modes may have on my set out, is it better to submit as windowed or to take a chance on submitting it as fullscreen 1024x600 without actually being able to test it?

If you want to be compatible with more than just Netbooks running at 1024x600, which is probably a good idea if you intend to sell your game, you'll want to start your game by getting a list of all the available display resolutions.

If you 1024x600 in the list default to that.

If it's not in the list, then default to the desktop resolution.

That should be the best way to do it and not exclude anyone, because the AppUp store is available to ALL PCs, not just Netbooks, right?

Thanks for your advice KISTech. Being initially designed for Netbooks I didnt even think that it might be used with other pc systems.

On my laptop it didn't list 1024x600 as an option either. So I used the Set Display Mode 1024, 600, 32 which worked in window, and exclusive mode without any problems.

I would once again, like to remind everyone that the resolution for this competition is 1024x600. I've just had to e-mail back to a couple of entry authors because.

1) A user submitted an entry with the resolution set to 1024x768, on netbook's this produces the error.

Runtime Error 1507 - Display using 32 bit not supported by available hardware at line x

The line the user used was

Set Display Mode 1024, 768, 32

The error was fixed by changing it to

Set Display Mode 1024, 600, 32

But no entry is going to win, if the first thing it does is throw up an error.

2) Another user sent in a game that ran at the correct resolution, however the game used sprites, specifically as a font system. When I ran the game, only one quarter of the fonts appeared. Giving it a very nasty look.

If you need to check your graphics, on a display that doesn't support 1024x600 natively you can do so easy by setting the game to window mode, then using the Set Display command to adjust the window size to 1024x600, you don't have to keep the game in window mode, in fact I recommend using Full screen exclusive mode wherever possible. But it will allow to you to check your hud, graphics, sprites and other visual markers to make sure the positioning is correct.

Windowed/Desktop/FullDesktop

I need some help with what these mean and what commands get you to the required(fastest mode).

Windowed: OK, this is where your game has a window(little red x etc), is that right?
You could maximise the window but I presume you are still in Windowed mode?

Desktop: I presume this means your window takes up the whole screen, but could this also still be windowed or not windowed?

FullDesktop: Does this mean.... I dont know... what does this mean?

Also, I just tried this:

And my computer(vista) crashed, it works without dbWindowOff() but then I still have my window

EDIT: Fixed crash by not calling dbSync() before doing other things, also got my window off with dbSetWindowLayout(0, 0, 0), still need help with the definitions and best way to achieve each one, thanks.

I have the feeling no-one will respond to my question on my thread so I'm copying it here...
Question: I was going to make the game ONLY run at 1024x600, if it's a netbook, fullscreen, if it isn't, windowed. But can I just run it fullscreen at whatever resolution the user's using()? On a netbook it would still be 1024x600.

Well, as long as you're running it on a netbook, the images and sprites will not get stretched ugly. What I mean is, that the resolution on a netbook is 1024x600, right? So, that means that the screen is almost twice as large as it is high. On a PC or laptop, the screen proportion or ratio (height/width) is different. For example: 1024x768 >> the screen height is (256 pixels) larger than the screen width/2.
Do you get what I'm trying to say here?
Basically, you can make it run on both, but you'll have to keep this in mind, and you'll most probably have to alter the images, things related to your camera (position, fov, etc...)
On the other hand, you can do it like I did with my BRIXOID game. On a netbook it runs full screen, while on any other machine (PC/Laptop), it runs centered (you can still see a border (the desktop) around the game).

Hope this helped?

Cheers

That was what I was going to do orginally, but the game gets streched out anyway. So far(other than some temperary text) everything is 3D, and lookes terrible at 1024x600 on my monitor(windowed), it's streched out horizontally(16:9 is just a little wider), but fullscreen, it lookes so much better. (I'm aware sprites and such would become oddly shaped, but I don't think that would stir up much trouble in my case) I was mainly just wondering if I was allowed to always make it fullscreen.
Edit: I'm just going to stick with my original plan because normal resolutions expose the low-res textures too much.
