Decided it was about time to start a new personal project. This is a short one, I have 10 days to complete 100 crate textures. All hand painted and as original as possible.

Oooh, sounds like quite the task, should be a good exercise for creativity.

Looking good so far mate, and you know, we always enjoy literature on hand painted textures...

Looks awesome! Toonish is definitely your thing

Is this project a community project like the last few of yours? Or is it more of a showcase?

EDIT:

Oops, nevermind:

Hey, when you finish someone can make a "Box Wars" game like the old Half-life mod. Imagine playing some FPS in a warehouse full of different crates, and each player has the appearance of a crate. Stand still and they will never find you.

Oh that was one of the funniest mods ever! Good ol' times

Edit:
Forgot to say: nice crate-work Mr. Mooney!

Now the plot thickens, the fps decreases, and the awesomeness goes through the roof.

Haha, just add a creepy smily face to the 'front' side of all the player boxes, so the only way you can identify the other players is when they are looking at you with this psychotic face painted on the side of the box. xD

Alright, day 2 done. Bit late, worked 12 hours this morning then straight to a grill out.

First post updated.

Thanks for the ideas and comments. I think the hardest part of the project is figuring out 100 different textures.

100 crates in 10 days? hmmm, if I look at the different frames on your crates, and the different side surfaces, I get 8*19 possible crate designs just from the 20 crates you posted so far, that would make 152 different crate possibilities. I think if you keep this up your 100 crates in 10 days might end up being 1000 crates in 10 days LoL.

Keep it up Josh, you have great style.

Cheers!

P.S. Oh, and your pics are way wide, they are throwing off my forum formatting.. LOL. (I was half tempted to reduce those and repost them with my mod edit powers, but I won't.) Let me guess you now have a 52 inch computer monitor and it's native rez is 1920x1080?

Cheers! v2.0

When it's done you should release all texture templates and textures what you have done so anyone can have awesome collection of boxes.

Check for pure horror.

David: I never thought of it like that! Sorry about the resolution, I'll reduce them now and repost.

vortech: That's the plane. I actually have quit a few elements that I'm using to build these textures. Could come in handy for any texture.

Gave myself a day off from everything yesterday, so not counting it as one of the days for this project. Sometimes you just need to unwind and sit on your arse all day and watch TV.

Day 3 uploaded, enjoy! First post updated.

Day 3 is certainly the best so far. I love that style! I also love it when you do these "X models in X days" threads. Very interesting to watch, to say the least. Keep it up!

sure they are nice, but I'll try to help a bit more than saying they are nice,.. Something was bothering me in the day 4 batch, the top row with the cloth draped over the box, you forgot to drop shadow the bottom side of the cloth, seems that the rope has a shadow, but not the cloth. And the shadow on the rope crossed the outer frame of the box, from what I see you are trying to give the impression the outer frame is bigger than the inset, so the rope shadow would not show so much as it crosses the outer frame, since the rope is tight against it. Just pointing this out, you might want to make a few adjustments. (also, personally I would make the shadows a bit more pronounced, so they retain their 'shadow-ness' when rendered at a small size.)

Critique is nice, but feedback is better for learning.

Cheers!

Thanks for the feedback guys. Day 5 is almost on it's way.

David: Good eye. Honestly the texture was bothering me when I finish it. I'll go back and rework the shadows. Thanks.

The alpha would make the other side of the box invisable mate

Heres a few ref's

then theres the ammo, health, shield. For ammo you could split it into small arms, assualt/sniper/ rockets grenades. Different coloured health sizes, small med large+ (could be a + overlaying each other or something)

Shield coul be a blue shield, Power ups- movement speed, shield plus, rate of fire. Weapon crates, stencil weapons on the boxes- could go cartoon or military-(stecil numbers and general millitary logos ect) A random box. Theres hundreds

Yup, 2am ftw! Went to sleep around 3.

Day 6 is up. All of day 6 textures have an alpha channel, the black parts. TS doesn't recognize .png alpha channels, so I couldn't show a render with them.

First post updated. Day 7 will be up later tonight. Off today and tomorrow, going to make good use of the time...maybe finish my appup game.

Day 3, 21-25 are coming out really really small. Is that right?

Also, I'm about 75% done with a small game inspired by your crates. It's called PUSH. Here's a screenie...

Do you mean 26-30? As those textures where made using paint to look similar to old 386 style graphics.

Your game looks like some fun. Can't wait to play it. Any chance of using any other textures for it?

No, I mean 21 to 25 in the day 3 .rar file. They come out as 16x16 images, unlike the rest, which are 512x512.

EDIT: In fact, they don't even look like the 21 to 25 pictured in the original post, they seem to be smaller versions of 26 to 30. Curious.

Further EDIT: Well, since the ones in the first post aren't really labelled, it's the bottom five in the picture, but images 21 through 25, they are just really really tiny when extracted from the rar, 16x16.

Quote: "Any chance of using any other textures for it?"

Well, I've used most of the day 1 textures for the title screen, and some of the others on the "options" screen. But inside the game, the crates eventually blow up, so I thought the "explosives" crates were appropriate.

Oh yah, the boxes are posted in reverse order...I forgot. Lol. They're suppose to be 16x16, I was trying out different things. Wanted to see if I could do some pixel stuff and make it look good.
