Defy the Odds Competition 2011
CONTEST CLOSED - ALL ENTRANTS THREADS LISTED IN 2ND POST.

A contest open to any FPSC developer using FPSC x9/x10/Modded. Developers are welcome to enter a submission they have already been working on since the end of last year (refer to the rules section). We’re looking for the experimental, the commercial, the finished and unfinished, the polished and the unpolished. All we really ask is that it’s playable.

The concept is for FPSC game developers to produce a demo, mini-game or a full release game consisting of a 1 level demo/game to any amount of levels that you intend for your released game. There is no genre requirement, so you can submit any style of game and/or any section from your game if wish. The choice is yours.

Entries will be judged equal. A small, well-thought out single level game/demo, can be just as good as a multiple leveled game.

Also of note; this thread will be followed by KeithC for possible BOTB Candidates.

I really love, that this competition allows the entry for games that allready have a WIP/Showcase thread.

Former contests often had a small number of entries, because a lot of developers had allready started on a project and didn't have the time to start another one just for the contest.

Well thought out, guys - congratulations!

Great idea!

Even tough I am not making games with FPSC any more But who knows?

Anyways, since it seem to be such a big contest, you could have an extra 50points if the game manage to get published.

You can enter games you've already been working on, but not if they've been posted in the WIP or Showcase forum before the 5th Dec 2010, or if they violate any of the other rules:
Quote: "- Developers can enter a submission they have already been working on, however a project/game that was submitted for a prior contest (winner or not) or awarded a BOTB is not eligible to enter.
- Entries can not have a WIP/Showcase thread predating 5th Dec 2010."

First I will address any questions,

@Doomster, thanks. I will add it after its decided which prize list it shall be joining.

@anayar, thanks for the offer. If you can do what Doomster has done by sending a email to the address located in the first post. This will help later to track. I will also add this at a later date.

@Cyborg ART, thanks. Yes very true, however this is more awards on the finer details. However I do wish anyone all the best on future sales or publishers.

@knxrb, thanks for clearing that up.

@Bootlicker, sure why not. Added to the 2nd main post for now.

@ThoughtWire, no worries. Theres around 6 months until the deadline. I hope that gives you the time to sort it out.

Also, concerning the GrandPrize.
Please remember that the other 4 sub categories are also up for grabs. This gives the option for a developer that has skills in one main area (say Audio, or Modeling) can focus on that area, which may work out in their favour for the sub category top points. Compaired to a developer working across the board.

This was also setup for those who are good at one or more areas of development to increase their skills in other areas of development.
Check the scoring points, see what you need to work on, where is the best areas for yourself to gain points. Or areas you could add towards your game to build your chance for more points in a category.

Good luck to all.

After spending enough time banging my head on my desk to leave a nice dent, I'm gonna have to drop out of this one. Reason being is that FPSC just can't (or won't on my PC anyway) do the stuff I want for the game I'm working on. I've moved on to DBPro and will be using FPSC for the models and level geometry, but sadly that will disqualify my entry as it will not be entirely made in FPSC.

Let me also state for the record that this is NOT a slam on FPSC, I just am very particular about the look and feel of my games and find FPSC too limiting for what I want as the end result. I still enjoy building the levels in the level editor and the amount of quality models available for FPSC make it worth the asking price alone. When compared to other engines like Unity, UDK, CryEngine, etc, you can't beat FPSC for ease of use and availabilty of game-ready assets. Now that I've learned how to leverage that in DBPro, the sky's the limit, and that's what's led me to my decision to use DBPro to create the final product over FPSC.

I will still be happy to post a WIP thread for it on the DBPro side of the forums when the time comes, as I'm quite pleased with the results I have achieved so far. For starters, "goodbye" lag and low framerates, "hasta la vista" quirky FPI scripting bugs and "see ya later" lack of useable dynamic lighting. So far I've added in a CPU friendly screen blur, glowing tracer rounds that spark on impact, realistic headbob while moving, cam shake when firing and more. Just have a couple more things to add and player movement/firing will be 100% complete. Once I have that and my initial level geometry built, I'll start the WIP thread, so stay tuned. I may have something as soon as this weekend if all continues to go well.

Best of luck to all the participants who enter, and I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with!

It compiled! Ship it!

[Drumming fingers against the table]

Hmm... I'll think about it. I'm trying to come up with a good storyline that people will like. I think I'm on my fourth story revision, so we'll see what happens.

Can anyone join at anytime just by putting something like "[Defy the Odds 2011 Entry]" in their title, or do they need to say they will join here first in order to be elgible for judging? I know we need to have a WIP posted before Nov 25, I'm just wondering if we need to say we are going to join in this thread in order to enter.

Cool contest idea. I'll be looking forward to seeing how this turns out even if I don't join.

At any rate, I'll return later on and announce whether or not I will join.

This is Captain Coder, over and out.

@raymondlee306, added.

@Captain Coder, yeah I can see what you mean by me adding names to the list. I will break it down for you and any others interested.

1. A forum user asked if I could make a list of names on the first page, I didnt see a problem with doing so. Also anyone on the list can exit or not post a final entry. its just a list so others know who may be entering.

2. Anyone can enter at any time. As you pointed out, you just need to have a WIP posted before Nov 25th.

3.If making a new thread, you can add the addition (contest name) to your thread title, however not needed. As some users may submit a game before the contest was announced. (check rules for official start date.)

4. When you are ready to submit, check the rules section for submission details. If there is anything you or others dont follow for this. Let me know here.

And thanks for the comment, all the best with your game if you enter or not.
