Hello,

Per some recent discussions had in several threads I obtained permission from TGC to create a App Game Kit Community Wiki.

I have laid out the basic site framework at this point and have begun adding some content.

I will be glad to input it all myself as time permits; but as it is a community wiki if people have interest and time then your help is always welcome.

Some ideas that I would personally love to see added are:

- community templates
- community code examples
- community tutorials (game center, ads, etc)
- resources
- tools

And open to other ideas as well , basically lets all pitch in what we would love to have available and contribute as you will.

So keep in mind.. its a skeleton framework at the moment.

I have begun adding in all the commands starting at the top alphabetically with ACos

You can view the main wiki page here:

http://appgamekit.wikispaces.com/

If you would like to help but not sure what you can do ; adding more commands is the first thing we need to fill up.

I obtained permission to copy the content of the current online documentation from Lee to use as a starting point so I am transcribing the online AppGameKit documentation for commands to the Wiki commands page currently here.

So if you do want to help you can copy the style of what I was doing (easiest to edit a current page and copy the table format I used for example) and then add more commands as time permits.

Again I will be glad to do this myself; but help is always welcome.

I would not quite consider this an official "launching" of the wiki yet as its very WIP right now .. but I can see some light at the end of the tunnel so wanted to share it as there are lots of great contributing community members who may have things to add

Please let me know if you have questions, requests, or ideas I will be glad to try and incorporate them when able to do so.

Nice work. I'll try to add the odd bit in my spare time to help get this started.

WTG! How does one become a member, and start helping?

Also, what is the name of the wiki? I'm having trouble adding it to my list of favorite wiki's in the dashboard. I've tried AppGameKit, App Game Kit, AppGameKit, App Game Kit commmunity wike, etc.

Some suggestions for making the wiki more than just a copy of the online help...

"category" links on each command page

Notes on how a command might differ on specific platforms

Great work.

Love the idea of adding Guides. However make sure that the guides are step by step CLEAR instructions. Right now some of the T2 guides posted here do not work on their own

Nice, this will be a "condensed" version of the forum and help files, so people can get help without looking for it for hours

@ Hodgey : thanks much appreciated!

@ Rich: I believe its "AppGameKit" without quotes.

- I just approved your membership request so it looks like you figured it out. I have never joined it as a member; I was the creator of it. So what steps did you have to take Rich?

Quote: "Some suggestions for making the wiki more than just a copy of the online help...

-those are great ideas! Well see if we can implement them!

@bjadams: TOTALLY agree with you

@Impetus73: That was one of my original ideas; lets take the best resources from the forums and place it in the wiki so it is integrated in a way that is easy to locate, indexed as part of the resource.

I'm not saying the forums aren't useful. But I can search for the right thing here and miss it because I didn't use the right word.

In the wiki the hope is if you want a template, it will be in the templates whether I called it the "iOS Game Center Integrated Tier 2 template" or the "android template for v108" You just find the templates and there it is.

Also versioned templates with history will be useful to have for people who need to stay on X version due to certain device support that is deprecated or other reasons.

I'm really excited about the Wiki and glad you guys are immediately seeing uses and improvements!

Nice. I was thinking of doing one myself (http://www.appgamekit.wikia.com/) but realized I don't have enough time to keep it up to date.

So, good one

@erebusman,

Okay, I just added the CreateSprite() command, so I think I've got the hang of how to follow your style. But it seemed like a lot of work. Are you using some sort of automation or translation process?

Hmm, maybe put the page together in word pad and then paste it into the wiki?

More hmmm... I see bax made a change in the physics pages. In order not to duplicate effort, I'd like to claim the sprite pages for editing at the moment, see if I can't get them all in today.

I'm using a kind of half-assed translator program, but it could surely be improved upon.

EDITED to improve the code, less fine-tuning required with this version.

I am under AncientLady (my preferred forum handle with or without space as allowed by the forum).

I will clean up my v1076 templates and the ones I have for v1082 and post them sometime during the week. Since the Templates page doesn't yet exist, I'll have to do some work to figure out the best layout.

When it comes to templates I think it's best to split it in 2 sections:

Vanilla Templates (AGK templates with no user modifications, but cleaned up to compile & work)

Pimped Up Templates (AGK templates with user additions and improvements)

@bjadams : Yeah I'm not sure if any one is or not still using Xcode3.. correct me if I'm wrong but isn't there something about Xcode 3 that would flat out get you turned down on the App store right now? I think its sandboxing is required and can only be done in 4?

Use your judgement ; but there could be historical or instructional value from having that there even if its not supported by Apple? More content is always good in my mind.

RE: Templates : Yeah I'm really excited to see how we can do the templates section. Most of my spare time goes into updating commands still so I'll leave the experts to that area. Thank you again for your contributions in that area.

QUESTION: I got a request to join the wiki from someone I did not recognize?

Do we want to approve everyone who asks? Or approve only known community members?

Its very possible I wont know everyone to approve so I shy away from the only community members BUT I'd hate to have an internet troll or a spambot come and destroy all our hard work too?

Thoughts?

Do a forum search on the name. If it doesn't come up at all then I'd be cautious since pretty much the only way they'd know about the wiki is through this forum.

I've just created the Templates page on the wiki.

It has all the pure and tweaked templates that I've created and tested so far:
- Windows MS Visual Studio Express 2010 (v1076)
- Apple iOS Xcode 4.5.1 (v1076,v1082)
- Apple Mac Xcode 4.5.1 (v1076)
- Android (v1076)

I will try and get more of the v1082 ones done (Mac and Android). But I am trying to get all the levels created for my completed (but not yet published) game and will be busy with that and then the details of actually publishing it. It has a working leader board at my games site (with a bunch of scores as I've been testing it).

Dart_lv - thank you for the contribution I can certainly update the header however I am unable. To change the color theme unless I pay for a more expensive package than I've already paid for. As the colors are not super important to my perception over the data I probably won't spring for that myself.

Thanks again!

Alright the 1076 commands are done at this point I believe.

Debating whether there is a lot of value to transcribe the code samples ? or link the AppGameKit default and then have a community code examples ?

Replicating default documentation isn't really the larger purpose of the wiki?

So time might be spent better doing other stuff?

But having folks need to leave the site to find stuff ? Seems wonky too?

Thoughts?

Okay so what I think I'm going to do for lack of feedback at the moment

1: start on the 3D commands so well be up to date on those soon

2: I really like the threads on shaders, I might like to add some shaders sections to the wiki

3: I think we might want a community wiki functions area. I know we have an official AppGameKit community functions project I'll have to research/get permisison to have those on the wiki probably.

I just posted compilable and linkable Tier 2 templates for v1085.

I have not tried doing any 3D stuff (or anything other than the bare templates).

I will work on the Android, iOS and Mac templates soon.

Make sure to NOT let your Nexus 7 update to Android 4.2. It is buggy as sh**t! I had to uninstall a great app because it stopped working as soon as I let my Nexus 7 update. Now I am trying to downgrade it back to what it was before. Not easy.

bjadams, google 'android 4.2 problems' and you'll see some of the stuff that has popped up.

I see a bunch of bits saying they've fixed the issue, and my Nexus 7 recently updated to 4.2.1. Sadly, my 'Reader by Sony' still won't work.

that's why i got a nexus7 so that when fixes come out they will come available on day 1!!!

4.2.1 seems to work ok here, didn't notice any visible issues. i'm sure google will work out any problems, they want to maintain a good os

Yup. The strangish thing is that the problem I now have with the 'Reader by Sony' on my Nexus 7 is the same as the problem I had with it on my iOS devices.

Enough people complained about that in their reviews of the app and Sony got a fix out within a couple of days.

Now I need to find where to complain about the Nexus 7 w/Android 4.2.1 and see if Sony can fix it.

Unfortunately after testing the new beta 108 side by side w/ my 1076 I found that having it install breaks all my 1076 apps which I'm working on still so I will have to scratch doing the shader stuff for the wiki until 108 is out of beta.

And yes: I installed in a different directory - but this immediately broke compiling for my 1076 apps .. *sigh*

You can install the two versions side by side. I have v1076, v1082, v1083, v1084 and v1085 all installed at the same time and can test in any without interfering with others (as long as the project directories are in discrete directories).

Well, the only versions on the AppGameKit Wiki Templates page are v1076 (all), v1085 (Windows, iOS) and v1088 (Windows, iOS, Mac).

And a major difference from v1084 is the addition of Facebook.

So, if you have a v1084 template, it is not complete for working with v1088.

For Android, the Core.cpp file is the same from v1084 to v1088. But the pre-built libraries are definitely different.

For iOS, there are some differences in the Core.m file from v1084/5 and v1088. And more differences in UntitledViewController.m. Both are in the template Classes folder.

I am currently having difficulty with the Android v1088 template and am getting help from Paul.

Can ANYONE provide some help in being able to create a car/bike with wheels to make it move efficiently and smoothly? I got the AppGameKit Book, on page 668 it shows how to create a container (frame of the body), struts (shocks), and wheels and use the CreateWeldJoint and CreateRevoluteJoint commands. I've done this and yet whenever I put my own container, strut, and wheels on it, it's so jerky and flips over quickly and I'm getting frustrated in trying to figure out how to make this work effectively.

Can anyone help?

I've also used the SetJointMotorOn command to apply a motor to the wheel joint that was created using the CreateRevoluteJoint command. I've tried adding mass to it using the SetSpritePhysicsMass command and that helps weigh it down. But, there's GOTTA be a more straightforward way of doing this and anyone who has had some success, I would greatly appreciate any help.

@bstebbs: I haven't tried such myself but see if you can apply

SetSpritePhysicsCanRotate( iSpriteIndex, rotate )

with rotate value of 0 to the bike's frame.

This would prevent it from flipping over probably. Don't know how that would interact with all the struts and such but I suspect it would be okay?

I've been using this software now for 2 months. I'm playing around trying to understand the physics part of it. I'm interesting in making some platform car games but am getting frustrated trying to figure out the right commands to use to get the car to move fast like most online games do.

I created a body of a car and wheels and created weld points using the CreateRevoluteJoint command. That's working now but for the life of me I've tried so many different commands trying to apply force to the car to get it to move and move quickly but nothing seems to work well. When I increase the speed, the car lifts off the ground. And, I've messed with the Gravity command too (SetPhysicsGravity) but can't seem to get anything to work well. Commands I've tried are:

SetSpritePhysicsAngularVelocity
SetSpritePhysicsImpulse
SetSpritePhysicsForce
SetJointMotorOn
CreatePhysicsForce

I can get a car to move slowly across the screen with wheels spinning much faster than the car is moving (which of course makes NO sense) but I can't figure out the right combination to make this work.

I have also used the SetSpritePhysicsMass command to make the car heavier and I've used the SetSpritePhysicsFriction to provide as much friction as I can on the tires and the road. Nothing seems to work well.

Any suggestions? Has anyone done this successfully?

@bstebbs = you will probably get a lot more response from a thread in the AppGameKit product chat dedicated to your question however

- look at a video of a real car.. the tires spin around incredibly fast ; if the tires on your car are going fast that might be just about 'right' for physics? I mean without seeing a video I don't know how fast your really talking but car tires move so fast in real life you can only see a blur!

- I'm using physics to control my current player but they do not have wheels so quite a different applicatoin

however the properties I use for my player and overall settings are as follows

If your using Tier1 mainly just take out the agk:: and semicolon at the end and I think that's basic code.

My player only comes off the ground when they jump or fall off a height!
