Neither is better, they both have their merits.

I personally prefer PHP due to the lack of the need to compile every time you make any change.

ASP.net is better for very large sites as it is better at object oriented code. However it is a poor choice for small-medium sites. ASP.net also comes with higher costs (IDE, Windows Server) whereas PHP is free as well as the servers it runs on (Linux) also being free (it does run on Windows).

It is also worth noting the amount memory the two languages use, ASP.net uses a lot more memory unless you know exactly how to optimise, PHP is much more forgiving.

it's mostly an opinion: who loves microsoft's world will tell you that asp.net is better even for job opportunities... who prefers the rest, will say that php is better and will point you the huge amount of sites done with php (and open source cms and so on...), which are more than asp sites....

I am on this side: php is better. let consider it but don't forget to check also asp.net later... and indeed you should choose according to the job you will get... select a list of firms you would like to work for and check the technology they use and want

all the cool kids are using node.

that being said, between asp and php, i really prefer php. it is very flexible which i like, though that flexibility can easily be missused.

it is also much easier to knock out a quick script or just generally get something done without much fuss.

If you're looking to decide which one to learn, you'll find a lot more resources and 3rd party libraries for PHP. And not all web hosts include ASP by default and may charge an additional fee to run it.

If you do go the ASP route, don't do what my school did and use an Access DB with ASP for web sites. They taught us SQL but then only showed us how to connect ASP with an Access DB, which is completely useless for the web. And accessing a mysql DB from ASP is a bigger pain than you might think.

There is no better or worse. Only better or worse for a specific task.

You can have great success and great performance either way. MSDN runs off of ASP.NET so you know it can perform well. PHP runs a lot of the top websites in the world. The same can be said of the databases as well. You really need to choose based upon your skills, the skills of your team, possible specific features that you need/want that one does better than the other, and even the servers that you want to run this site.

If I were building it, I would lean towards PHP because probably everything you want to do has been done before (with code examples how) and because hosting is so much easier to get (and cheaper because you don't have the licensing issues to deal with compared to Windows hosting). For the same reason, I would choose MySQL as well. It is a great database platform and the price is right.
