I have a png file of a sword handle and a png file of a sword blade.
How can I create a complete sword sprite from these two assets?
Do I need a software package? What is good?
Should this post be on a different forum?

There are lots... But I use Paint.net which is free and in my opinion very good.

Load them both in (as separate layers), position them accordingly and then resave as .png.

@Funnell7 - can you amplify your comment a bit. I tried using paint.net and I almost got what I wanted. I had trouble using layers so I tried other things. But after manipulating two sprites I didn't quite get what I wanted. I ended up with white space to the right of my "combined" sprite instead of the checkerboard look which would end up being transparent when I loaded the sprite into a game. I hope I explained this okay and you can help me. I also have paint shop pro and corel photopaint but I couldn't figure out how to combine the sprites there either.

You need to hide whatever layers you want to appear transparent and save your image as PNG.
