Seizure Tracker
Android Utility App

New project, new wip thread. Hoping to get some good feedback for this project as it'll be very much needed.

Seizure Tracker is one of a couple apps I've been designing to help make life easier for many people. This was an idea brought up by my mother to help her keep track of my sister's seizures. There are similar apps on android, but they are either overblown with complicated features and menus or they aren't free. This app makes everything as simple as possible, with only two screens and a couple buttons.

Features:
* super simple, ready to use first time loading
* timer starts right on start-up, so no hassle while the seizure is happening
* everything is recorded and saved to file
* keeps a record for 3 months worth of data
* calculates percentages based on current data; weekly %, monthly %, frequency %
* easy to read, no hassle
* free and no ads

Screenshots:

Feedback very much appreciated and wanted. Want to make this app as useful but simple as possible. Want to complete this by the end of the week if I can.

Thanks guys and gals!

Nice idea. I think the UI is very basic, but you might be limiting your users a bit. If I understand correctly, I'm looking at a timer, right? I think that users might find the power button confusing and think that it is meant to shut down the app of the device as that is what power buttons mean. In my opinion I'd simply go with a labeled button that says "start"/"stop" and one that actually says "reset". And I imagine there will be another that says "statistics" or "data"?

The icon you're using for a power button is VERY nice though.

Also do you plan to actually display the time as MM:SS ? I think that would be appropriate and would be nice to see in a text box vs. a Print().

Another thing that might be really nice is to give the users to allow the app to automatically start the clock as soon as the app is launched. That way they only have to tap the app icon and it is already going so they don't need to wait for the launch and then also press a button when they are distracted by more important things.

I hope these opinions help. I'd also suggest showing it to some folks that are in their 50s to test for usability. If they get it without need of explanation then that's what you're looking for.

Thanks for the feedback Naphier.

Not sure what you mean. The whole point is to make it super basic, it loads incredibly fast too this way. And it's not like it's a game , this is intended for people who need to keep track of their seizures over days/weeks/months. Other apps I've found that log seizures tend to be full of menus, and showcase a cluttered screen..not to mention having to create an account, logging in, and sometimes recording video?(thought this was a bit odd). I want this app super easy to use, so limiting graphics and content on-screen.

I thought the button was straight forward. I plan to do some testing so if it becomes confusing, I'll switch to a "start" "stop" text. I haven't added the stats/log button yet. Right now I just hit enter to log for testing purposes.

Yup! Currently working on big bold easy to read letters/numbers. Print() is for testing currently.

Already does this! lol:

My sister will be a big test subject and oddly I know a few others and a couple nurses that I think would help testing.

Thanks for the feedback!

Text labeled buttons are often more basic than iconography.
I've found it very surprising to find how many people have no clue that the power button is that symbol... Also I'm just stating that it is typically reserved for power on/off not starting and stopping a timer. I'm attaching some screens of the stock android timer and iOS 6.1 timer. I can't say that it is OVERLY confusing. Just I can imagine older folks being hesitant when confronted with an icon vs a text button. Don't add more to the UI, just make sure what is there is clear. Keep it unclutter like it is, that part is good. So when I say you're limiting your users a bit, I mean that the icons might be a small stumble for some. Nothing is more clear than a labeled button

I love that it automatically starts the timer! I would download this for just a regular time just because of that. I hate the stock timers because I have to go to "clock" and then click the timer tab and then click start... If I'm trying to capture something quickly it will have already lost me 5 seconds

I'd almost suggest that you also brand this as a Simple Timer as well as a Seizure Tracker as it would give you a wider audience and you could just make some minor changes, if any. Anyway, great idea.

I'm always a fan of life-simplifying apps

As nice as the power icon is, I would agree with Naphier and suggest using Play/Stop icons. They are universally recognised. If you go down the text route, you either limit your audience or have to build in language settings/create multiple versions.
You should also have a power/exit button (much smaller) to exit the app. I don't like apps that may or may not be running when I use the back button through lack of clarity.

How about a "+5" button too? I assume it is the carer that has the app. They may want to add a few seconds on for the delay in starting the app. I added this feature to a task manager I wrote (for longer periods) and it was invaluable.

Quote: "keeps a record for 3 months worth of data"

Any reason to limit it? I imagine the data is very small, would somebody suffering from these symptoms like to see a yearly review?
