Well the first Tutorial i'm going to do is not a modeling tutorial but a Rendering Tutorial. (Because i'm good at that)

Im going to teach you how to make 2 cool and very different materials for a Vase!

So.....We need a Vase! And seppuku has kindly shown us how to make one. So visit his tutorial to find out how to make a vase.

I have a Picture of what i'm going to teach you how to do! (Its Beautifull.. dont worry)


So to get started i will pick the easiest and quickest to do... and that is the Glass one. (Bet you diddn't see that coming)

Ok. You have ur blank object with no material.

Make a new material and label it "Glass" (If you wish)

In the colour Channel Set the Red channel to about 85%.

After you have done that Go into the Transparency Channel and set the Red Value to about 80% and the Brightness to about 85%.

In the Refraction option, Put the number 1.52 in and check the Frensel box.


Ok now you want some reflecion on your Glass. So go into the Reflection Channel and set the Brightness Channel to about 60%

Now for the Specular of the glass.
Go into the Specular Channel and set the width to 100%, Height to 35%, Falloff and Innerwidth to 0%. This gives a nice large Soft Specular.


And there you go! Your glass Material is Finnished.. Simple hey?

I'll Teach you the other material a bit later.

Ok next Material.

In Cinema 4D you can have as many materials applied to an object as you want! (Aslong as you have some alpha channels applied othwise you wont see the materials underneath)

So in that light, We will have a base material first.

Make a new material.
In the Colour Channel set Red to 90%, Green to about 92% and Blue to 90%.
Uncheck the Specular channel as Its not very glossy and we want a Matt Effect.

Now go into the bump Channel and apply a bhodiNUT 2D Noise to it.

Now Click on the EDIT Button.

What you need to do now is to set the GLOBAL SCALE to about 5% and then Change the Noise to DENTS.

Leave the Bump Strength at 20% as this will be fine for what we need.

Now that is your base layer. Apply this to the Vase and you have something like this:


Not very Exciting at the moment.

Now we have done this, Create a new material and Label it Gloss (As this will be our outer and Glossy Layer)

In the Colour Channel, set Red to 95%, Blue to about 37% and Green to about 23%. Also set the Brightness to 85%.

Now in the Reflection Channel set Red to 100%, Blue to 59% and 23%. We do not want loads of reflection on the Vase so set the Brightness to about 18%.

Now in the Specular Channel set the width to about 89%, Height to about 51%, falloff to about 11% and leave the Inner Width at 0%.

Now enter the Specular Colour Channel and set the Red to 64%, Green to 100% and Blue to 64%. This gives a nice Yellowy Specular on the Vase.


Now if you apply this material to your object and render it, you will notice that you cant see your base material. What we need to do now is Add Scratches in the Gloss Material. To do this we need to add some information in the Alpha Channel.

Ok, so now go into the Alpha channel and Add 2D noise to it, Just like we did in the Bump map for the Base Channel.

Now click on Edit.

Pay attention to this next bit. I'm going to change a lot of things!

V Scale to 20%
Low Clip to 38%
high Clip to 27%
Brightness to -10%
Contrast to 15%

Noise to Blistered Turbulence

Colour 1 to White
Colour 2 to Black



Few, Now thats done for the alpha channel. If you Render your Vase now you will be able to see the Base Channel underneath. However, It looks very flat!

So what we do now is go back into alpha, click on that arrow then select "Copy Channel"



Fist before we Paste that channel anywhere, go into the Bump Channel and select bhodiNUT Fusion from that list we saw earlier.

Click Edit. Now in the Blend Channel, click on that Arrow and Select Paste Channel. FEW! That saved a lot of work diddn't it? It has copied our Alpha Channel Data into that Box.


Right, Now we Have the data in there it will make it look like out Gloss has Scratches in it. If you notice on my Render i have another Bump map applied to the Gloss. The bhodiNUT Fusion Channel allows us to do this!

In the Base Channel Box, Put in a 2D noise Material. Now go into the setting of the 2D Noise, and set the noise to Cranal and click Ok.

You will notice in the very top left of the preview window nothing has changed. This is because you havn't set your blend amount. You will notice under the preview there is a setting which says Blend. Set that to 60%. you should have something like this.



Click OK and then change the Bump Strength to about 50%

And There you Have it! Materials Made and Ready to Render!




Hope this has Helped! Ask questions about whats gone on if u are stuck and Show me what you have done

Ooooo! Almost Forgot. In the Object manager, Click on the Gloss Material On the Vase Object, and set the Projection to Cylindrical!

Did you use the Fusion Channel? Those Scratches look a bit flat to me. And yes, I think most people would like the first one better

After you draw your vase with the spline you need to use the Lathe NURBS tool.

In the picture, the spline that is drawn still comes out 3d

Mine is a 2d line for the spline. When I select the Lathe Nurbs tool, nothing happens and nothing shows up.

Any help?

click on the spline object in the object menu on your right, drag it on top of the lather object in the menu, until you get a arrow pointing down, and let go

Edit: In my Channels, everything is not in percents, it its in numbers;

For example, my colours go up to like 255

Well, I multiplied the percentages by 255 and used that number, but how did u get the floor like that instead of black?

Yeh Whatever! There are things i would say to you right now, but i'm not allowed to say them on these forums. Nobody Likes a know it all, So dont Act like one!

It took me about 1 Hour to write out that Tutorial. So next time your thinking about saying that, Dont bother. Argh! You've realy made me angry now. Was having a good day aswell.

New Tutorial!!!

This one is a Modeling Tutorial!

Ok This is what i'm going to show you how to make. Its Quite a Nice model for testing out materials on!. So we can use this model in Later Rendering Tutorials.


I'll Show you how good it is for Trying out Materials and Render Techniques:


Unfortunately i cant show you how to do that yet as this tut will take long enough as it is.

Ok We have to begin somewhere and i always like to begin at the Start. (It makes sense)

We need a Cube! So click on the Cube Button or go into Object==>Primitive==>Cube.


Ok so now we have a lovely Cube, The Default Dimensions will do fine so we need to make the Cube EDITABLE. To do this Either Press C on the keyeboard or press this Button on the Left hand side Tool Bar.

Making a Primitive EDITABLE means you can Edit the points and polygons!
Ok now we can start Editing the Cubes apearance.

In Cinema 4D there are Three "Modeling Modes" There is:

1) Polygon Tool

2) Edge Tool

3) Point Tool


We are going to be Switching between Polygon Mode and Point Mode, So keep a Look out!

Well Now we have an editable Cube, Switch to Polygon Mode.
Now Right Click, a Window Should Appear. Select "Extrude Inner" From the List.


After you have selected the Extrude Inner Tool, Go into the Active Tool Menu on the Very Right Hand side. Type in 25 into the Offset Box and Click Apply.


You should now have something that looks like this:


If you have something like this. Right Click, and Select "Extrude" From the list, Then in the Active Tool Window, Change the Offset to 50 and Click Apply. You should now have this:


Now when you have this, Right Click again and Select "Extrude Inner" From the List Again. Now go into the Active Tool window and Set the Offset to 12.5 and Click Apply Twice. You should now Have this:


Not over yet!

Right Click again, and Select Extrude from the List. Now set the Offset Value in the Active Tool Window to -100. Then Click Apply.
You will have something that looks like this:


Hehehe! Dont press anything after you click apply. After you click Apply, Press Delete on the Keyboard. This has now Deleted those Polygon faces we were using and has now made our object with holes in:


Right... Doesn't look Very Smooth does it? This is where HypeNURBS helps us! So, Click on the HyperNURBS Button or go into Objects==>NURBS==>HyperNURBS.


Now in the Object Manager Drop the Cube into the HyperNURB Object. Like so:


Woo!! Looks Finnished.


But O NO!!! Whats this? We have holes on the Inside of our Object:


This is Becuase when we Extruded the polygons in to meet each other, they did not Join to each other. And this has caused Holes in our object when we applied the Nurbs object.

Now, Switch to Points Tool. And Click on the Rectangular Selection Tool. Or go into Tools==>Rectangle Selection.


When you have selected this tool, Go into the Active Tool Window and Uncheck "Only select Visible Elements". This means now when we Drag our rectangle over all the points, every on of them is selected.

So Select all the points By Draging the Rectangle tool Over the points. Right Click and Select Optimize. A window will pop up, The Just Press Ok as the Default settings will be Fine. And Bang! Notice those Holes Disapear? Woo hoo! However, our model is not complete yet! Its a bit square. This bit may be a bit confusing so pay attention.

Switch to a Top View or as its called in C4D... View 2:


Now Select the Live Selection tool, and in the Active Tool window Uncheck "Only Select Visible Elements". Just like we did for Rectangular Selection.

Click on the two point selected, Whilst Holding down Shift, This allows you to select points after u have let go of the mouse button.

After you have selected these two points, Change the X Value in the Coordinates Window (Which is Currently 100) to 85.


Now do the same to the opposite Side, making sure the X value is set to -85.

Now select these points and set the Z Value to 85.... Notice a Pattern?


Select the points opposite to this and set the Z value to -85.

Now go into View 3.

Select these points:


Set the Y Value to 85. Select the opposite points and set the Y value to -85.

And there you go! Finnished! Took 1 and a Half Hours to write, will thake 2 minutes to do with a bit of Practise. Hope this Helps anyone!

Now thats Modeling! No Splines or anything. This is the Way you want to learn how to model as you have more Control over your polygon Count and the Shape.
