Hi all,

We are currently throwing around ideas about creating a printed game making magazine. We would anticipate it being published on a bi-monthly basis, be around 64 pages in size and full colour of course.

The core content would be exclusive articles written by the TGC team and affiliates, covering our core products (DBPro, FPSC, 3DWS, DarkPhysics, etc). We would ensure that the magazine is primarily tutorial based and not just pad out pages with 'news' that you could get just from reading the forums.

Edit: Just to clarify - we will not have this magazine in bookstores or news agent shelves. We will have it printed locally and then ship it worldwide ourselves, so yes we can deliver it to any country.

Before we invest more time into this we want to gauge the interest of our community. Can you please post your views and answers to these questions:

1) Would you actually buy such a magazine?

2) What price would you expect to pay for it? (please state currency as well!)

3) How often would you like to see it published?

4) and finally, What articles would interest you?

Please note that this magazine would not replace our current free monthly newsletter.

If you think the idea is a bad one, you are welcome to say so - but please qualify your reasons.

Cheers,

Rich

Sunrise - Please could you answer the questions (or at least the first 3) so we can get some idea what you consider 'too expensive', etc. Thanks.

Edit - Nicely editted But please add a price.

1) Absolutely. I'd collect them like a big nerd, and I'd re-read them over and over, just like I used to do with my C64 magazines.

2) Price - Probably $8, US. That would be $48 a year.

3) Interval - Bi monthly would be good. The DBP world moves too slowly to be monthly.

4) Articles -
Tutorials of course.
3D modeling tutorials!!!
New DBP technologies, of course.
Game industry news
Indie game news
New technology
Game reviews, DBP and otherwise, might be nice as well.

TGC is out of control. I love it. World domination.

Is there enough of us these days (Bedroom coders I mean) to warrant it! - not a question, I'm guessing there must be.

1) Would you actually buy such a magazine?
Yes, definately.

2) What price would you expect to pay for it? (please state currency as well!)
If it came with a CD, then this would be different, but really about £5 is all I'd expect to pay.

3) How often would you like to see it published?
Monthly

4) and finally, What articles would interest you?
General game development stuff, like level design techniques, AI theory articles - things to inspire us to try new techniques. Articles by industry pro's would be great, I remember a tutorial by Peter Molyneaux in STFormat - sadly it's about the most interesting thing I ever read , that sort of content would make it more interesting for more experienced users I think.

1) Would you actually buy such a magazine?

Yes, I love to read a good games/computer magazine although my magazine buying has dropped dramatically in the past two years. Mainly due to them costing to much and me not having the spare cash.

2) What price would you expect to pay for it? (please state currency as well!)

I'm not sure of the current price here in Ireland (it is expensive though €8 to €11??) but I would think between €6 and €8 would be a nice price, if it came with a cd that would be cool too.

3) How often would you like to see it published?

Bi-monthly sounds good, plenty of time to fill it with good content or monthly.

4) and finally, What articles would interest you?

Everything DBPro game making related and using other programs and plugins with it to make games.

Hopefully it wouldn't come at the expense of the current qualtity news letters though.

Hey Rich, do you reply/check your emails ? (granted, you must get a lot ).
Does the email subject "Save gamers game saves, put gameDentity in the next Newsletter!" ring a bell?

Anyhow, hijack over,
1) Would you actually buy such a magazine?
Yes

2) What price would you expect to pay for it? (please state currency as well!)
Perhaps near the standard price of most pc mags (£5.00) but considering that most of them of more then 64 pages, perhaps a bit less (£3/£4)

3) How often would you like to see it published?
I believe Monthly/Bi-monthly would be best so then more devs are likely to have the cash (freshly paid) each month to buy it, although fortnightly could possible work at the right price

4) and finally, What articles would interest you?
Tutorials, developer spotlights/interviews with fine devs like myself , new Product releases TGC/community created (like gameDentity ), demos, behind the scenes at TGC maybe, pretty much what Sunrise 3D says

We have no idea Van! No other company does anything like this, which is why we are polling people on our site, and collecting comments like yours from the forum populous. And we'll do the same in this months newsletter. If the response is healthy then it is worth investing more time and money into. If not, then naturually the idea will be shelved for another year.

Quote: "1) Would you actually buy such a magazine?"

Yes...depending on the content (teasing on the website needed).

Quote: "2) What price would you expect to pay for it?(please state currency as well!)"

Up to 10€ per issue if a CD with sources and demo is bundled, 5€ if not...5€ if it's a downloadable version (PDF + disc ISO)

Quote: "3) How often would you like to see it published?"

Once a month...

Quote: "4) and finally, What articles would interest you?"

DBPro Tips and tricks, DBPro inner working things (DBO format for dummies, vertex manipulations, ...), shaders, development framework, Products tutorials, ...

I'm sure it's a good idea but printed magazines have a hard time now...I'm not sure it's worth the effort!!!

Just to clarify, if you missed my edit of the original post - the magazine will not appear in shops. We will print it locally and ship it ourselves. So yes, it will come to Finland, etc, because we'll send it there

Quote: "I'm sure it's a good idea but printed magazines have a hard time now...I'm not sure it's worth the effort!!!"

You are right, but we will not be competing on that level. I.e. you will not see this in a newsagent or book store. We will post it to all subscribers. While things like PC magazines are declining in sales, we think this is a niche enough market to sustain it - but this poll and others like it will prove if our feeling is right or not

1) Would you actually buy such a magazine?
Yep, every issue. Although ALL code and projects talked about in the magazine would need to also be online for download.

2) What price would you expect to pay for it? (please state currency as well!)
Tough question, since I am in the US, and computer mags from the UK usually cost $13.95, so I can't afford them. I would be willing to pay $6.99 per issue, with a discounted subscription of $36.

3) How often would you like to see it published?
I would love it to be monthly, but bi-monthly probably would work.

4) and finally, What articles would interest you?
Tutorials on everything!
3D mostly, DarkPhysics especially!

*** I would also like to see credit toward subscriptions for anyone submiting articles to the magazine. That would help us afford it here in the US, as well as help get more articles submitted to the magazine.

1) Would you actually buy such a magazine?
YES
2) What price would you expect to pay for it? (please state currency as well!)
8€ max if it comes with CDrom or DVDRom.

3) How often would you like to see it published?
bimonth is good.

4) and finally, What articles would interest you?
like uppoer post but with these sentences too :
-Articles about 2D and 3D Modelling with well known softwares,
-Articles about news about new development software (music, 2D, 3D and sound)
-More deep informations about DBPro, FPSC and DGSDK (internal structures we can use, more on TPC, etc...)

All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.

1) Would you actually buy such a magazine?
Yes.

2) What price would you expect to pay for it? (please state currency as well!)
£3.99. I wouldn't object to paying about £1 more if there was an accompanying CD.

3) How often would you like to see it published?
Every month would be good but not if it compromised the quality of the content. Realistically, I think bi-monthly would be a better choice.

4) What articles would interest you?
Tutorials - maybe each issue could contain an on-going beginner, intermediate and advanced tutorial with the accompanying source code available on the a CD. I guess a lot of the content would be 3d-related but it would be good not to ignore 2d game development.

Cheers.

1) Would you actually buy such a magazine?
general consensus i think. YES

2) What price would you expect to pay for it? (please state currency as well!)
$8.00 - $11.00 (AUD) with CD - $12.00

3) How often would you like to see it published?
Monthly would be nice, but i dont think there would be enough content. Bi-monthly sounds do-able.

4) and finally, What articles would interest you?

-an area that covers each genre and what is being done in that genre in dbpro. Like PCGAMER does...
-Tutes.
-Industry pro's lending their words.
-SCREENSHOTS!!

AND DEMO'S i think a cd would be GREAT!!

To be honest, it is a good idea, very good idea actually, but eaven if i could buy it(distance, and MAIL THAT NEVER COMES of my country), i dont think i would, the reasons why are here :

As i said really good idea, but look at the idea a bit 30-40 pages concerning ALL TGC products, does everyone have them all ? Then most of pages would be 'not usable' for them, if you understand what i mean, for example i have dbc, dbp,FPSC, and i would have only two articles that concern me, if you understand what i mean, but as i said, great idea, and hope you find as much customers as you can,

Best Regards,

-Dodic

1. I think this is an excellent idea and I would definitely pay for such a magazine.

2. If you were considering putting DVD/CD media on the front of the magazine, I would happily pay £5-£6. If there are no plans for attaching media to the front page, then I would still be happy to pay £3-4. This is of course easy for me to say, but then again I don't know how much it cost to publish a magazine.

3. I think every 2 or 3 months would be good.

4. I would like to see DBPro tutorials (maybe by TGC staff themselves), tutorials on 3rd party plugins (maybe). Maybe letters or articles from other users sharing experiences on how they would tackle certain problems/ideas. e.g. collision/physics techniques.
News pages. Upcoming events. There are probably loads more, but I can't think of any at the moment.

Rich,

I love the idea. Bi-monthly to Tri-monthly would probably work the best. I'd expect to pay $10 to $15 USD (depending on how much content was included).

1) Yes....but that's kind of obvious...

2) I would pay $0 for the magazine and $6-$8 ($9-$12 if a CD is included) per-issue for membership (USA).

3) At least bi-monthly, but I'm impatient so I would prefer every 1.5 months o.O

4) Teh list:
a. AI tutorials, algorythms and examples
b. Frame-saving techniques (such as hiding faces behind others, not moving/updating things offscreen, etc.)
c. General programing tips and tricks
d. RTS, RPG, and FPS programing techniques
e. Too-Dee tutorials, tips and tricks
f. Memblock usage examples
g. More 'advanced' subjects:
g1. Vertex manipulation tutorials
g2. Multiplayer tutorials
g3. Text parsing techniques
g4. Collecting a model's poly's normal via Intersect Object or Vectors (and if it's not possible yet, then add it! )

1) Would you actually buy such a magazine?

Oh indeed I would, in fact, where do I have to sign...

2) What price would you expect to pay for it? (please state currency as well!)

£2, maybe £2.50; For a 64 page mag that seems a fair price. Theres no need for CD's with it, u could post all the source/media online for ppl to dl for free. Altho I'm looking forward to a magazine with source in it to type out just like the days of the speccy

3) How often would you like to see it published?

Every couple of months would be cool

4) and finally, What articles would interest you?

i) Coding tutorials, for everyone be they a complete noob, or a really advanced programmer, and everyone in between. I'd be most interested in 3d lighting effects,
ii) Perhaps reviews/tut's on modelling/music software as well? not necessarily stuff made by TGC, just stuff that ppl might use to help make their games/apps
iii) well, just more gr8 stuff, like the email magazine does.

Without Music or Love the world would be a very empty place... Thank god I still have music.. --'-<@

Quote: "1) Would you actually buy such a magazine?"

Hell yeah, the newsletter isn't enough to be honest, as soon as I get a job of cause

Quote: "2) What price would you expect to pay for it? (please state currency as well!)"

£3-5, I purchase 3D world mag which has slighty more content and a demo disk, so the shown price sounds fair to me
Quote: "3) How often would you like to see it published?"

Monthly sounds fair, like most computer magazines and newletters
Quote: "4) and finally, What articles would interest you?"

1- Tutorials based on all of the apps, some that will skip an issue and others that will be in every issue (eg. Like DBP every issue and T.ed once so often)

2- Q&A section, readers get to ask questions and if they are appropriate they get answered in the magazine

3- Developer diaries, to be honest people will be interested in projects of developers of both pros and non pros

4- Game reviews/WIP overviews- Give an insight to TGC projects and review a demo/db project a issue, (or two projects)

5- From the forums section, some computer magazines do this if they have a forum, heck my bro got his article mentioned in an apple mac magazine, and time will tell as soon as I get one of mine in a 3d mag

6- Editor's perspective, have the editor say an opening paragraph in the front page, just seems pretty standard to me

7- Of course (Not stealing ideas from the Cinema 4D newletter) have an interview with a TGC worker each time round about random things,
like the last C4D newletter was about Jenny wanting to race an Aston Martin around the Top Gear track.

8-Application reviews - have reviews on differant applications a month, doesn't have to be programming, 3D modellers, music 2D makers, etc.

Also, I am going into a career of writing, with journalism and am studying into it, as good practice, for no fee I would be willing to do any small jobs, most recently I have been writing reviews as practice for coursework (in which yey! I handed in today and am a free man ) If you are interesting in free labour in sections, I could give detials if you do email me @

1) Would you actually buy such a magazine?
Well, it depends - So long as it covers mainly DBP/DBC rather than a mix of all of your products then yes.

2) What price would you expect to pay for it? (please state currency as well!)
Without a CD £3 - £4. With a CD £4 - £5.

3) How often would you like to see it published?
Bi-Monthly

4) and finally, What articles would interest you?
- DBPro/DBC tutorials
- Shader tutorials
- Coding techniques
- Graphics tips
- Modeling tutorials (but this would have to be in general and not for specific modelling packages)
- Some sort of small bi-monthly competition (like the ones currently on the forums) - no prizes or anything, just a mention in the next issue
- A section of WIP's

I'd buy it. Probably £5 sounds OK for a specialist mag.

Yes, I would buy it.

$4 USD per issue, $6-$7 if it came with a CD full of source code and stuff.

Published bi-monthly or so would be cool.

And articles I would like to see is developer spotlights, tutorials, examples, behind the scenes on different projects, want adds, services and of course jokes, a professional russian model, and amateur movie and video game production.

I would certainly be interested in purchasing it (in other words, yes). I was just thinking the other day while browsing through my local book store for magazines that a DBPro magazine, or something of the like, would be really nice.

I would pay about $10-$15, depending on the content.

Bi-monthly would be best, as there just isn't enough news in the community worth a monthly publication.

Articles of interest would be coding tips, techniques, and concepts; tutorials; game design theories; interviews with developers (not necessarily big name, but from anyone who has a decent, professional title); and things a long that line. It would be great if a CD came along with it that contained demoes, source code (for tutorials), a few freebies, and demoes of popular apps.

There's a lot of cool things that could be done to really enhance the community a bit more if this magazine idea goes through. In recent weeks, I've been really enthuiastic about DarkBASIC Professional, and I hope this trend continues on TGC's part

Yes, the QA session in every publication with both Mike & Lee would be very cool, you can create online question form, where we could submit our questions, than a computer program would pick, lets say, from 5-10 questions every month so Lee or Mike could answer them. Would be very cool!

I would probably buy it, and I hope you do go ahead with it. I'm one of those people who actually prefers reading from a page than reading from a screen. I like to take the magazine out of my study and read it in more comfortable surroundings. But if I'm honest, I'm not too sure how many other people buy a magazine for the same reason.

People used to buy magazines for the information it contained. With the onset of the internet, though, you could get pretty much all the information you needed online. So magazines relied more heavily on the cover disk, and people bought the magazine just for the demos and free software on the disk. Now, with most people having broadband, you can download demos and free software from the internet too.

The problem I think you have with this game making magazine idea, is filling it, or the cover disk, with information/software you wouldn't be able to find online. And, as mentioned above, DBP users are not going to be that interested in pages full of FPSC stuff, and vice-versa.

Also, selling through subscription only, you may put people off buying at all - I used to have boxes full of STFormat magazines, but I never subscribed to it - I only bought a copy if I had the cash in my pocket when I saw it in the shop. I suspect that lots of people, who would gladly shell out the spare few quid they have in their pockets to buy a game making magazine they saw on the shelf of WHSmith, would be a lot less willing when asked to write out a large cheque for a year's subscription.

Anyway, hope you go ahead with it - I personally think £3 with no disk, or £5 with disk, is a pretty fair price to ask.

Well, it's time another opinion stepped into the ring!

1) Would I buy this magazine?
- I'm going to have to be honest: my answer is probably not. Now before I get hate mail from all those who have just supported this idea, hear me out. As a student living in Canada, I have a couple of problems. First, the pounds --> Canadian Dollar conversion combined with overseas shipping costs would make this inevitably expensive to buy over and over again. Second, as a student, I am not what we would say "rich," I don't have the economic ability to buy all of the expensive things that I like. That being said, I think I would prefer putting my money into new features that add functionality into DarkBasic, (such as the new DarkPhysics for example), rather than putting my small amount of available cash into a magazine.

2) What price would you expect to pay for it?
As I said, shipping included, I would expect that the price would be between 15-20 CAD per issue in order for TGC to make money. I don't think that I could continuously shell out that much money, but if TGC managed to drop the price between 5-10 CAD, then I may become more interested.

3) How often would you like to see it published?
-For people like me, the more infrequently a magazine like this is published, the better. Actually, if issues were offered less frequently with more material, then some shipping costs could be saved, but this is just an idea.

4) And finally, what articles would interest you?
-A whole bunch of advanced tutorials might convince me to buy it every once in a while.

I think its a cool idea, unfortunately I also won't be able to afford it all the time. But I would be willing to pay $5 to $7 American, for each issue if it came with a disc.

I would like to see info on future TGC stuff, tutorial, tips, tricks, workarounds, lots of info on the more advanced stuff like memblocks. Someone stated before, funny stories from the TGC office

I also think interviews with pros and indie developers alike, indie game reviews.

But most importantly E-Coupons for TGC stuff!

Just as a point of interest, I print the monthly newsletter out, and it generally runs to 12 pages or so. I use it as traffic-jam reading, and it somehow seems better than an email newsletter.

I would be very interested in suscribing to such a magazine, featuring such topics as tutorials of all kinds, specially 3d, net functions, maybe a monthly overview of current plugins, etc.
I think a reasonable price, would be arround 5 dollars.
A drawback I see with this, is the shipping, and the costs associated with it.
I live in Mexico, and to be honest, the mailing system here is not good ("terrible" would be the correct word). Maybe you could provide us with an electronic version? Maybe a PDF with the proper locks to avoid piracy.
Another issue that comes to mind, will the monthly newsletter will be of the same quality? Wouldn't the non-subscribers be at a disadvantage in matter of information? Like, some interesting tutorial appears in the mag, we wouldn't be able to post that in the forums. Worse case scenario, a vital article that "should" be already documented in the tutorials section? How would you handle this?
apart from that, yeah, I would subscribe to the mag.
By the way, the tutorials I would be interested in:
AI
3D
Physics.
Basic algorithms.
Hey! a functional trigonometry course!
Memory (memblocks, proper usage of MAKE MEMORY() and the like)
An overview of current plugins.
An article about utopic projects would be fun.

Bimonthly would be a good interval, otherwise you guys will be working day and night without rest.
$5-$8 american dollars without cd, $7-$13 with cd.

Yes.

Around $5, depending what S&H would be?

3) How often would you like to see it published?
Monthly would be good

4) and finally, What articles would interest you?
Programming tricks and tips from the crew on this here forum, a beginners guide to writing a FPS, and all the news of coming projests.
I would also like to see a user creation page,Show off your stuff, and a help section, answered by TGC.
