I think the loading times may be because the database is still indexing the 2.2m+ posts for the search facility... well maybe...

Quote: "So, what on earth happened to last year's beta forums that actually had working features and proportionate elements? Did we just completely scrap it and hack together a buggier version?"

The beta forums were based off the old forum code with some alterations, this code actually had a lot of security issues and wouldn't work on any new PHP version. Therefore it was abandoned and this source code was written for the GameGuru site. It will be buggier than the old forums as it has never been tested with the amount of data we have here at TGC, but improvements will come.

If you want to see specific improvements from the beta forums, please let me know what they were and I will add them in.

Quote: "Anybody else agree loading times are twice as bad as they ever were before?"

Again I am aware of this, it is likely down to the fact this database is about 20 times the size of the GameGuru one and it hasn't ever been tested that large, bugs are too be expected. I will go through the code and fix any speed issues.

Quote: "I think the loading times may be because the database is still indexing the 2.2m+ posts for the search facility"

2.5m posts, this is very possible I haven't checked actually but I will.

Yup, I am slowly getting through some of the things people mentioned. You should hopefully also notice that things are speeding up, they will get faster. We also now have SSL on all forum pages by default, so nice secure browsing now.

?? No, that should never happen. If you're in the left hand lane, you go either left or straight ahead, and when you do, you stay in your own lane as you exit. If you're in the right hand lane, you can go straight ahead or right.

I agree. The posts themselves aren't completely horrible, and might even be considered good, but they're still not as neat and compact as the old forum. Ah, I'm trying not to be too hard on TheNext... obviously he's had (and still has) a huge amount of work, but... well I had a horrible day today and the new forum isn't doing my frustration with unnecessary change any good. I really feel like quitting right now... my boss is a decent guy and he's trying to do a good job, but he's way too picky about the dumbest things. I had to not talk to him at all for about an hour this afternoon because I knew if I said anything I'd explode and get myself fired. I hate working there but I need the money He's relatively new to his position and he still doesn't understand a lot of the problems he's causing, but I don't know how to tell him. For instance, he's CONSTANTLY changing the positions of all the stock at several stations. From his point of view, he's repositioning stuff so it's fractionally easier to access or creates a marginally better flow, but what he doesn't realise is that every time he changes something I have to relearn the whole process! Being forced to unlearn the way I learned to do the job every second day is exceedingly frustrating and makes my job unnecessarily difficult.

I really don't know how I'll go tomorrow. I only have to survive tomorrow and then I have until Monday before I have to deal with work again... but one day can seem like an eternity.

Beh, Spotify never ceases to give me reasons to hate it utterly! They have been adopting new highly animated ads lately, which is just plain obnoxious. I occasionally enjoy looking off into space while I listen to music, Spotify still the active window on my screen. It used to be that all ads were static, and so they weren't too annoying in my peripheral vision. But now it seems they're all animated, which again is just obnoxious.

I also went to create a new account, so one particular ad would leave me alone, and the signup form only asked for a password once, but asked me to type my email twice. Not a big inconvenience, but why?

Sure, their service is great, but they don't provide said service intelligently.

Pfffft!!

Nah. Their free version hasn't convinced me that paying would be beneficial. It's a love hate relationship with me and Spotify, honestly; without it, I would be bummed, but it sure does bum me with all the silly things it does too.

Ah! I quite like the new lines between the body and signature portions of the posts. Nice little touch there.

Automatic points calculation for The Posting Competition? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Anywho, this is nice, but if we're going for modernization anyway, why not just go to Discourse?

OMG I just noticed that the forums will actually show your "Playing" field now!

That...has never worked as far as I know. I must try now!

EDIT: Yuuuussssssss it works! I wonder why it didn't work in the first place?

Now if only I could remember what I was playing back in '07 that I actually tried to use (and thus discovered the glitch)... I think it was Star Wars Battlefront 2, or maybe the Harry Potter games... particularly the Chamber of Secrets game, that was a lot of fun on the PC, actually is what inspired me to look up game development

And hey, speaking of games, who on here plays Guild Wars 2? That is probably my favorite game currently, ARK is ok but it's way too hard, Minecraft is kind of "meh" at this point and GTA V is slowly wearing me out (you can only go pick up hookers and drive off a cliff while diving out of the car to save your own ass so often before that gets old!). If anybody else plays Gw2 let me know, I belong to a clan but it would be nice to play with other people sometimes

Ah no way! That looks like horrible forum software! Seriously, don't even suggest something so abhorrent...

So far it's taking very little effort to embrace the new forums, about which I'm greatly surprised - but also very relieved

Mmm, I need to go to bed so I can get up bright and early to get to work on my 3D printer again! Gotta install the endstops, new correctly-sized pulley, pushfit connector for the teflon/PTFE tube... and then try to work out the immense complexities of the Repetier firmware Should be fun!

Are we looking at the same software? From what I've seen, Discourse seems to be just fine for flat forums like TGC.

On a side note, let's see what this mysterious "quote=" does...

EDIT: Cool, so it will actually put a name to a quote. Figured that's what it did, but experimenting is fun.

Sorry, I'm with Clonkex - I've looked at Discourse and have participated in forums that use it, it's annoying, very few features, and looks like a cobbled-together Stack Overflow-like system that's very difficult to read. I prefer standard forums!

I'll just go ahead and nab these points.

EDIT: Guys, don't hate me. Plz.

But I went and re-installed my old GameMaker Studio application and have since reactivated it. Why? So I can get a prototype of it working much more quickly, since I don't have to worry about setting up a lot of the other stuff "by hand".

And also, I spent $149 on it two years ago, I really *should* make something with it to justify the purchase...

But GML is still kind of an annoying language...

Please watch Bojack Horseman. It's a very well written story with relatable characters and good character development.

On the surface it looks like a typical comedy show, which is definitely part of it, but once you watch a few episodes you begin to realise just how deep the storyline goes and how tragic Bojack's life actually is. It really hooked me. So much so that I ended up powering through both seasons in a single weekend.

Bojack is amazing. The first series was better in it's entirety, but the second series was on par with the first more towards the end.

It actually got so cold in my house that I had to turn my heat on for a few minutes after showering. I was a walking icicle for a few minutes!

Ah, indeed, it appears I forgot to add little dashy-like marks, such as this ---------

Yes, I meant it was so cold in my house this very morning, not the morning of that particular day ~7 years ago. It was September then. Not particularly chilly at all. Today our high is 55, but it was about 42 when I woke up. Woo!

So I love how in C# [And some other languages I suppose] you can create XML documents IN-MEMORY as oppose to always needing an actual file...

So I am designing some tilesets for my game that I am making, I am challenging it so that for each tile/character/object I will not use more than 3 colors for highlights, midtones, and shadows. This is creating a fairly nice shading effect and is making the assets look 8-bit-ish but still modern, in a way.

Each tile will be 64x64, as 32x32 is way too small unless I force the game to run a ridiculously low resolution (like 1024x768), which just looks awful when upscaled to match a user's monitor.

Perhaps memblocks would be usable, otherwrise just write a bunch of UDTs and a bunch of functions that emulate an XML file. Then you just write a loader and reader that converts to and from the UDT and XML files

This would be difficult in DBP due to the structured nature of it as well as the poor support for references.

Manipulating XML in memory is the default mode for most libraries in C/C++ as it's exponentially faster. I guarantee the HTML parser in Chrome/Firefox is all in-memory manipulation of the DOM. Most of the time in these libraries you have to explicitly serialize the DOM in order to write it to disk.

Sure, but it's definitely not stored as a string of XML in memory. It's going to be some internal tree-like data structure.

I shall post a picture tomorrow! Right now I am still doing a lot of tweaking to get it to look right. I'm very nearly there!

Whilst I was doing this I also thought of a brilliant idea. In order to save time and resources, I am designing the sprites at 64x64, but I may need to blow them up to 128x128 since 64x64 is still pretty tiny. One way to do this, I realized, is it to just zoom in on the image to 200% in GIMP, and then take a screenshot. That simple! Since GIMP doesn't blur it when you zoom in, you don't get that horrible artifact effect that would from doing a normal resize/stretch operation. Yes, I am that smart.

EDIT: Whoa, just realized I've been a member here for more than 8 years now... scary! I mean I should have been banned by now
