Hey all. I eventually couldn't resist this question as many times I waste my time practicing my martial arts instead of wasting time programming in DB.

Just post why you do/or don't study martial arts. If you do, say which art. I'm not going to start rambling unless I have someone else to ramble with.

i know kungfu lmao@Keanu!

nah, i'm more powerful than that, i know lots of martial art techniques, been studying them for a long time. I'm so good and so fast, i just need my fingers to do all the necessary moves i need! lmao@joypad!

Okok, enough of rambling, the only thing i know is just plain ol' boxing! (not really a martial art)

I'm so-so at Karate and Tae Kwon Do. I'm not currently studying anywhere, however. I highly prefer Tae Kwon Do to Karate.

I know many to consider "just plain old boxing" a martial art, especially when it somes to non-kicking, non-grappling methods of self defense.

I study a TKD (Tae Kwon Do)/Karate hybrid (Americanized TKD, or "American Karate" - official name). I enjoy the sport/nature of the art for tournaments and competitions. I also enjoy the exercise and a set of self-defense abilities it supplies. However, until I learn "Hadoken", I know better than to think I can defend myself from a gun-man at a distance over three feet.

@ mouse

I prefer the kicking art as well. Primarily because I'm 6'4'' and people seem to think that my legs are abnormally long - lol.

lol...

Before I started American Karate, I thought I learned all my martial arts from Street Fighter and One Must Fall. When I came to the dojo/dojang, however, my instructed had a few words about my roundhouse kick:

"It's not a slow and sloppy inner crescent kick, you moron. This is a roundhouse..."
<WHAP>

Me: "Oww!"

Okay that didn't actually happen to that extreme, but you get my point.

I have been taking martial arts on and off for the pat 10 years. Most of the time has been spent with Tang-Soo-Do, which is Tae-Kwon-Do's older brother. Tae-Kwon-Do branched off of Tang-Soo-Do, and became more sport based. It uses more flashy kicks and such, while Tang-Soo-Do sticks more to self-defense. Other than that, they are VERY similar.

I had also taken a grappling class for about 6 months. It was a mix of anything that works: Judo, Ju-jitsu, wrestling, and Aikido. That was a GREAT class and more suited to how I prefer to fight. The class was about 2 hrs long. We would spend about half the time learning techniques and the other half killing each other on the mat. While I enjoy Tang-Soo-Do, I proably learned as much good fighting abilities in the 6 months at the grappling class than I have all together at Tang-Soo-Do.

I study the ancient art of The Monkey Ninja. Pheer my wrather, or else my monkeys will get yah

Eh..but I also know Ta-Kwon-Doe..I quit when I was a purple belt because i didn't pass the first time, and then it got VERY boring. My brother is now in it, and god damn..they teach it entirally diffrent. When I was in TKD they actually told you to HIT, not just move your arms and act like your using force. I've spared with my brother recently, its just freaky. Isn't fighting about force? About power? Not about crisp moves. I can trip him in an instant and then crush his lungs....*sigh*

Walk around your local downtown. I have 5 in the area, and it's not a big city, I'd be really surprised if there were none in your locale.

IMHO, although martial arts is good to know, the most important step is always learning how to properly punch and kick. It's horrifying how many people throw their arms back and then hurl their fist forward, or sort of dive-kick, without knowing what they're doing at all..

Thats also pathetic. If I was ever confronted by somebody, when it was a bad situation, I would simple do one of those hand-slit-throught (sp) attacks. Then, I would take the mans wallet and walk off fast.

Im doing karate and judo in Jap and it sucks, kills the legs and the kicks are crappy. Yet the punches are powerful. You have to know all your patterns at whitebelt and we just keep on doing to same stuff 20 time over and over.

I like the tiequando kicks, the arate punches and the judo throws.

@ mouse & morph

Amen! People like that should be reminded that the martial arts is also about fitness and power - more than just technique/speed.

Morph, if you were confronted in a situation I thought you'd just sick your monkeys on the punk and his wallet - lol.
On the serious side, I didn't know that Japanese arts could emulate the fighting strategies of animal base philosophy (ninja is Japanese), I only thought Chinese Kung Fu styles did that. I just got educated today!

I've been doing Brazilian Jiu Jitzu for about two months or so. I'm learning under a purple belt (that's 2 down from black - and 2 up from white, hehe) I get a 2-hour lesson once a week with 2 of my friends.
I haven't learnt nearly enough to be able to defend myself from a guy my age and build, let alone a gunman.

From games i've learnt how to be a minesweeper and how to blow up worms with a bazooka.

Meh.

lol... ya'll are insane
i'm sure there are a couple here who take real martial arts rather than just that you can bullet time with.
i study a form of Ju-Jitsu, and Tae-Chi ... have also done a little Tai Kickboxing - prefer legwork alot more, but the Tae-Chi gives me a good range with my arms it might be boring to learn but it certainly as hell gives lets you learn howto block attack very quickly and even more to actually speed up how you react and fight as a whole

but everyone has thier own preferances for fighting, brute force of wrestling and boxing seems to be what dominates around here alot - even the martial arts places have alot of emphasis placed on physical strength ... to be honest i'm not sure that is such a good thing.

@ Arrow - Go for it, kendo is great!

I'm not actually any good with no weapon. I seem to blunder around most of the time
I've been broadswording for a while now, which is fun. Hopefully soon I'll join a reinactment group.

As for fighting games err well. I really despise beat 'em up games for some reason ... I just have no interest in them. But severance ! Now there's a good fighting game.

Bashido Sticks, Nunchuku, Katana, Katani, Kato & the Nasty three prong daggers thingies (i know the name i just have a pissy memory lol)

i'm qualified to used them all ... i specialise in Katana Kojii Style - thought is it a bit of a shock when you use the real blades for the first time and the actuality that they bloody hurt when they slice you up, you learn ALOT of skill that way.

ya know the dojo i goto is pretty cool, i don't actually take lessons or anything - just joined because i have a friend (well sister of a friend) who works there, and she's about the only person who can still show me that i've got alot to learn ... so its really for the challenge

It certainly is a bit of a shock ...

There was one bloke who bought a really nice full sharp blade and when he first drew it he sliced right into his fingers ... nearly taking the tips off all of them! so you can imagine his face then. But you don't have to imagine the finger bit ... I won't mention fingers again.
Just make sure you don't all chop your fingers off. Yeah. *look at his own fingers and tries to imagine what they would look like if they were just stumps*

I wouldn't mind too much if I lost any fingers but my index and thumb on my left hand, or my 4th and 5th fingers on my right hand. I could learn to live with that pretty easily.

lol... its not hard its just bloody dangerous is all
i've never had a fingers incident - and now i've been practising with a real weapon for a good 15months i'm getting pretty good, especially with the weight differences.

its good to know howto fully use a Katana ... because understanding each side of it as an offensive and defensive weapon is quite a challenge. When you just start out normally they give you a wooden version thats made of oak carved in a similar shape but blunt. they still hurt one hell of alot when they hit, but atleast they don't lop anything off

i've gotta train with Feena again tommorrow lunchtime, i'm not sure if i should look forward to it or not cause she's been in a mood with me and alex the last week lol - have a feeling she might want some blood ... so thankfully its not a weapons match ... well perhaps end up using Bashido Sticks.

i saw that she got some new weapons the other day, which are blades that look a bit like half swords... and they have a baton like handle and an edge that is shaped for the wrist. looks pretty leathal

AFAIK, Judo doesn't have punches as such. It relies on getting people into holds where they cannot move. So you have a sweep of the leg to lift them off their feet rather than a kick. This is certainly true up to brown belt level, and from what I have seen of black belt and above on sat. TV, this seems to be true of all levels of Judo.
