Just wondering what everyone else around here thinks the best film ever is?

I think the best film ever would have to be...

The Shawshank Redemption

Terminator 2: Judgement Day
Star Wars 3

Star Wars 2 was excellent, bot #3 is gonna be even better. I have read up on some new movies by FOX comming out, and, DBZ is one of them with special FX from Lucas Arts. I would put it there, but its not going to be released until after Star Wars 3, So I don't know..

The Matrix. NOT RELOADED - compared to the first, reloaded looked like it was written by a five year old.

Anything from Kubrick, half of Hitchcock's stuff, quite a bit of Orson Welles' stuff.

Speilberg has done a couple top movies -- Schindler's List, Private Ryan, first Indiana Jones.

Lucas gets point for American Graffiti and The Empire Strikes Back.

For watch-ability, the Matrix movies are probably near the top.

To hell with it . . .

My #1 is the first Matrix.

Excellent film, with a surprisingly good plot (even if it is a retread). Quality effects. Most of the actors played above their marks. And, whatever your opinion of it is, it was an instant culture icon for all time.

Matrix Reloaded loses a shot, simply because the freshness is never going to be there for a sequel (with maybe the exception of the afore-mention Empire Strikes Back).

It gains points against other more lofty classics, such as Apocalypse Now, Cane, Dr. Strangelove, and so forth, simply because the Matrix is incredibly entertaining, while many truer classics are awful to watch because they are too serious, no fun, or their technical glitter disappears with new technology.

The Matrix holds up to a lot of tests.

We can't stop here! This is bat country!

i'm not giving my best movie yet, but my best kungfu (human-type kungfu, not flying/bullet-time/hyper-speed/fireballs type), would be from Jackie Chan - Gorgeous.

As for copycat of Matrix-style, mine would be Jet Li - Hero

I like quite a few movies...

T3
Robotech II: Sentinels (I wish they would have finished it)
Robotech: Do you remember love
Most Jackie Chan movies (I think I like all of them)

And thats about all I can think of now, my memory seems to be slipping a bit today due to my surgery.

yeah, all Jackie's movie were cool, whether he is directing it or not

I still can't wait to see the most anticipated kungfu movie to come, where Jackie & Jet will be duking it out in the same movie (kinda like a versus movie, like Freddy vs Jason type)

Yup, its in the planning stage, not confirm yet as both actors do have their own schedules but hey they did it for Freddy & Jason, it may as well come true as we hope

Not forgetting, there is also gonna be a Superman vs Batman movie, but soon after they've release the latest Batman movie & the new movie of Superman.

yea, kinda think of it, i think some of my best favourite movies consists of VS type:

1. Someone famous (in real life) VS another famous person (real life)

= Pirates of the Silicon Valley

2. Someone famous (fictional) VS another famous fictional character

= Upcoming Superman VS Batman

3. Lots of famous ppl are inside the same movie (and stay long in the movie)

= The Quick and the Dead (Sharon Stone, DiCaprio, Gene Hackman, Russell Crowe)

= omg there's alot of this type

Blade Runner will have to be my choice.

The movie is full of mistakes and wooden performances but it did have style and brought SciFi to a new level and made it respectable (a bit)

Don't wanna see anyone to comment on 'deeper meanings' and anything like that. Depth is to be found in oceans and some books. If you want depth and you look for it in movies you miss the meaning of film and fun. You wont see depth in 2-3 hours. what you see is a bit under the surface. (i am in a bad mood, don't ask)

Of course there are exceptions that verify the rule! (I call that the argument clause)

Aliens. ie. the second one.

Oh, and there was a film with that bloke from Crouching Tiger Burping Kestrel (or whatever). Chow-yung-fat, or sommit like that. Is a fair bit old now, and I think it's called "The killer" or something like that. Has a scene with him walking along a beach with nothing else on it but a small girl. He looks at her then swings around and shoots a few times into some trees far away. A few seconds later a couple of sharpshooters fall out onto the ground. Turns out he saw the glint of their lens' from the reflection in her eyes. Class. Ends with a shootout in a church and about a million bad guys. Anyone remember it (and what it was called)? Was ace.

T3 had better be good too. Was worried about the 2nd one being 15 rated in the trailers (original was 18 rated), and I prefer the 1st film. Now T3 is 12A rated... slightly concerned...

The Aliens serries was a really good serries, & so was the Predator serries. I prefer the 4th alien movie, it was the best in many peoples oppinion. the Second Aliens was the second best.

I am currently waiting for AvP the movie, but its going to be a long time till we can see any previews of it.

I'm going to have to go with Raven and say Ghost in the Shell. Only just, though - Perfect Blue is an amazing film, too. Can't wait for GitS 2 to come out!

Aliens is my favourite of the series - good atmosphere, lots of guns and a decent enough plotline. Number three was pretty abismal, but four had it's charm.

And, not forgetting, the most amazing comedy of all time: Monty Python's Holy Grail!

Oh, there's just so many other films I want to list here: The Matrix, Life of Brian, Terminator (not two), Dragonheart, Akira, etc.

3. Terminator(all were good imo)
4. Tommy Boy
5. Black Sheep
6. Contact
7. Matrix(first one)
8. Billy Madison
9. Spider-Man
10. Air Force One

i cant waitch movies like tommy boy, black sheep and billy madison over and over.

i'm with raven(sigh) , gotta be ghost in the shell, that kicked ass

Akira was good.

Cyber City Oedo 808 was funny as hell and some good fight sequences, but it ain't for childs under 16.

Demon City Shinjiku(spelling) was ok but once again not for childs.

The Brolly movies in DBZ were ok(got all the Jap VHS now). Movie 12 of DBZ was pretty good.

Mobile Suit Gundam Chars Revenge was a cool one.

I'm not sure if it counts as a movie (because the VHS's where kinda split up in to sections) but Blue Seed was a nice little romp).

Bastard was ok.

but hell thats my opinion.

that'd probably be my list too Dr-D
perfect blue was seriously awesome though, got into your head and completely f**ked with it ... then added some jam just for good measure

though really the western version of GiTS is pretty poor compared to the original, i mean if you only have to watch it in subtitles - you'll realise just how much they changed. There were 2 sets of western voices too ... most people didn't know that the puppet master was originally vocaled by a female voice but that it was decided (in america ) that it was an unsuitable subject within the western release of it because of the content that goes on.

sad really... but it sounds lot better with the woman.
GiTS2 : Innocence is being released in around 8 months, that i just going to truely be the best - i've seen some "unathuourised" footage of it already, and they've gone ALL out this time ... the animation is just breath taking, so realistic.

if you have a chance checkout Production-IG you'll find alot of awesome info there, and currently there are ::cough:: copies with subtitles of GiTS : SAC on the Kazaa.
120mb rouhgly per 30min episode and upto 7 have been translated (some are better than others) and the rest are pure jap.
apart from Motoko's new dress sense (those animators need to get laid man!) its a pretty outstanding series

Nope. And it's "Killers". Got it on DVD. This film was quite old (80s) from around Hard Boiled days. Erm, and ending in a church with a shootout?

Anyhows.. 4 is the best in the Alien series? Think not. Goes 2,1,4,3. With two being obviously the best. One being a better bit of sci-fi. Four being a rather good effort to get back to two. And 3 being an all time failure. Tried to get back to one. Ended up being terrible.

Cheers

It has to be Lord of The Rings. Fair enough, the film doesn't even begin to do the book justice, but the book was the greatest ever written, so that doesn't say much.

But before LOTR came out it would have to be The Shawshank Redemption.

Yeah - I've got about half of the Stand Alone Complex episodes, Raven. Pretty good, I think, but not a good as the film. Must have GitS 2! That also means I'll probably have to buy the manga as well before I have any chance of understanding it!

What I loved about Perfect Blue was the music - that was so eerie, made my hairs stand on end!

Hopefully the AvP movie will be as good as Aliens; then again, it's going to be hard to make - you've got to see the world from the viewpoint of all three species, and, of course, Hollywood has a tendency to stick everything into either the "Good Guy" or "Bad Guy" categories. Aliens are cool - they're the real good guys!

well i just hope they have the AvP's very close to the comic books and books... because the interaction between the spiecies in them is just quality
and its weird how the Predator females are like normal women, just with big like dreads generally a little more muscular looking.

DrD you been watching the series like subtitled? personally i think the series is cool, but the episodes are WAAAY to short. you always feel like a story is rushed. even the Complex ones that span several episodes just seem a little rushed.
maybe it won't seem so much so in english. just hope that people like funimation don't get the rights ... i'd like that Canadian company that did DBGT and Zoids to get it - or even if MangaEurope did it (god they've kinda been gone for so long you wonder if they're still going, but the site i still up).

not sure if you've seen this DrD but you might like it if you havn't

Anyone seen Firestarter 2?

Thats pretty good. Other than that, for story/effects i would say Armagedon is the best.

Enjoyment, must be Apocalypse Now Redux: you cannot beat the scene with Ride Of The Valkyries from Valgna planing as they take out the villiage.

LOTR is not in my best list, read the book, its nothing special.

I also like the terminator series, true lies is an old fav as to is [edit]eraser[/edit].

are you sure Yusuke? because currently there are no subtitled versions available, we've all discussed when there will be an official subtitle of them.
Currently you can only get the DvD's in Audio Japanese (not even Japanese subtitles)

but you've gotta admit even with the bad quality pic the new art for GiTS Innocence looks just outstanding

Dammit, now I really want to watch the Shawshank Redemption again, but I think my brother has the tape. He stole my LOTR DVD as well (actually it was half his, but next time I get my hands on it it's mine for the next ten months (probably more depending on when I get it) - he was only supposed to have it for 2 weeks!)

Probably but who gives a damn, but then again the 4 eps that i download were subbed, and i previewed the 5th and it was also subbed, and it wasn't anime empire subs, or any other imfamous pirators of anime on kazaa. but i'm gonna check around, and ask around see what the deal is. Personnally i don't need the subs i know japenese so really don't matter, but i'm still gonna wonder whos legit, and check a few more sites. As in 40 more sites.

So anyone seen Firestarter 2???

I would love to know, tomoz i plan to go through the movie and write down all the brilliant quotes it contains

Here is a taster:

More than I if truth were told,
Have stood and sweated hot and cold,
Through their reins and ice and fire,
Fear contended with desire,
Agued once like me were they,
I like them shall win my way,
Lastly to the bed of mould,
Where there's neither heat nor cold,
But from my grave across my brow,
Plays not wind of healing now,
And fire and ice within me fight,
Beneath the suffocating night.

All you 'should' be able to understand it. lol j/k no offence to people who can't
