ello,

i wanna make a new website but i don't have any ideas. i have the money, but no ideas lol, so i thought i'd ask you guys. it can be db related or not, any ideas at all would be welcome.

iv'e got some spare domains that need using up, but im also willing to register one. something for the db community would be nice, but might have to be ad-supported (if its going to be big).

i have scripting skills (i know alot of ASP and a bit of perl, and willing to expand my perl skills too), so dynamic sort of things can be added.

anyway, any ideas? anything you've thought "that would be kewl" but never actually done it? cheers.

(added: iv'e just realized i spelt website wrong lol).

make a tutorial website for DB and DBP, not for beginners or introduction, but about making a working game, example: the tutorial for making a shooter, rpg, fighting, etc.

U can make ur own template of tutorial using the codes that is available from the retro competition entries.

Well I was/am going to create a major DBP/DB source code site. Don't know if you've ever been to http://www.planetsourcecode.com but I'm aiming for something like that. Basically it'd be MySQL and PHP driven and users would be able to search through the site for source code they're looking for. If you're willing to help with this then just email me at Exeat@Designex.net

well, to be honest i want something new and unique, for source codes there is already http://www.darkbasiccodebase.co.uk
But once your site is up and running i'll put some codes on it

The tutorial site idea isn't bad, (i havent seen a full one for db yet). What would be good is a tutorial site where people can post tutorials and then others can read them. That way it would grow and be able to offer all sorts of stuff (even tutorials on things i wouldnt have a clue how to do, by *ace* programmers).

Still, if anyone has any other ideas/suggestions

How about a media files website for developers?

No stupid videos or anything.

Audio loops, models, textures, stuff like that.

Mattman -- immediate request for a dancing chicken 3D model.

ShockForge -- it would work, but you would have to be firm on the nature of the site, and also try to keep a good, simple, artistic style sheet.

The issues going to be:

Pay... don't do it. Don't let dweebs start posting models and trying to sell them. Maybe some charityware, but no pay. That's weak, and frankly there's TurboSquid for that.

Formats... don't just offer 3DS and X. You'll draw in a broader base of users with additional formats, such VRML, OBJ, LWO, etc.

Poseable models... expect a ton of mechs/zoids type models. They're a gimme if you can manage boning at all. Don't expect a ton of human models.

Low-poly models... if you're going to cater to DB/Developers, make sure the models are realistically suited to their needs. You might want to impose an arbitrary limit (like 3000 polys), and above that require the model under go review. The nice part is, too, down the road you have room to expand the site to include more artsy model types.

Promote a method for reviewing renders of work... Actually, if you want to see a really good example of this (if you can do a good PHP site) try looking at ArtSIG.com. Limited number of members, and everyone either has to critique, or pay for a subscription. Also, this encourages participation and repeat visits.

Submissions... I would keep this under wraps. Let them submit downloads, but don't let it automatically post. For the review section, only allow JPEG renders, no models.

Tutorials and article... Limited to a few folks who are really good.

That, I would say would make a pretty damn good website.

I have a stack of public domain 3DS models on my HD that I have downloaded for various projects. Mostly scenery items like chairs, tables, a few trees and plants. You can have all those files!

I think if it becomes aparrent to folks that they gain access to a lot of good models, you'll see submissions, since that will be a good trade-off.

It wouldn't hurt to impose a submission-for-downloads system. Where say one submission entitles you to ten downloads.

Plus, you'd need a freebies section, where the lower-end stuff could be had without any trade.

I was thinking a sort of http://www.3dcafe.com type of website would be quite kewl, but with all types of media (e.g., music, images, iv'e already made a category list ). And your reviewing system sounds good, but i may need more people to check the media as it comes in (if the site is a success).

It will be made in perl, and i'll make a system that sends all submissions to a moderator's page, where they can accept or deny the media. And it will be organized into cat's, i.e. "3D Models > Vehicles" could be a cat. All file types could be accepted (apart from massive ones, i.e. wav files for sounds/music).

I don't think the submission for downloads would be a good idea, it'll put alot of people of (and those who wish to download but not submit would sign up for multiple accounts anyway). If i begin to run low on bandwidth, and have alot of people using it, then i'll shove ads on it which should hopefully let it run without people having to pay for the service. And everything anyone submits will be available for free download, so people can't charge for their models

Kewl, thanx
Should help me get a foot off the ground. When i open then i should be looking for mods, would you want to be one?

Anyway, domain name ideas.
I was wondering what would be best, a db related domain or none db related domain?

A db related domain will maybe attract more db'ers, and vice versa.

i'm not sure on this one, but i think a db-related domain would be best. Which one would you suggest?

DBPMedia.com.. it sounded too attach..
Either user will pronouce it by letters:

'D''B''P''Media'.com (not really a smooth pronounciation & doesn't have the 'clicque' to it.

or they will pronounce:

'DarkBASIC Professional Media.com' (which is too long)

----------------------------------------

how about darqmedia.co.uk ? (this almost sound like dorkmedia!)

or how better still:

darkmediapro.com?

I'm not certain you want to tie into DB as the only identity.

Plus, a lot of folks unfamiliar with DarkBASIC have told me that it damn near sounds like warez and is very sinister.

Maybe something more developers-media.com or dev-media.com

I'm more than willing to help, but I think I'd make an awful mod (too strange of a sense humor, and a bad habit of picking on the meanies; see repeated flame wars in several posts).

Honestly, I think it is a great idea, because the one thing most folks here are really struggling for is media.

Plus, it sucks where you first drop into DB and realize that it is damn near an SDK for X and 3DS.

I have only been doing serious modeling for about 6 months. A gfx designer friend of mine started learning, and since I'm accused of being a quick study -- I have my doubts -- he asked me to help; since I've utterly plowed him into the ground. He's still limping thru primatives and scene creation while eating up ray-tracing.

Just so you don't think I'm talking smack, here's one of my favorite recent creations . . .

Did you really just register it?

I'm lazy and cheap. All my websites, depending on their worth to me, are on free hosts or run off http://86.75.30.9 [song, to the beat of 867-5309 (Jenny)] Jenny . . . Jenny did you lose my URL? . . . Because your not sending e-mails . . . where I can find them.[/song].

I assume your not hosting this yourself.

Really, unless you need some weird thing like local support for an engine connecting SQL, QBASIC, and web pages (I helped a guy with this once), there's no good in hosting yourself.

In other words, you have a stake in the server, and probably some access.

What is running?

Windows NT, Linux . . . Mac (actually, I knew a guy who serviced Mac servers for the AP, and they were crap; probably a lot better now with OS X).

I would assume Apache.

Yeah, I know about Codebase but it's extremely unorganized and I wanted something where it was all categorized with rated snippets so people know which ones are good and which ones to avoid.

Good luck with your media site though, I hope it turns out well.

i agree about codebase though, if there is something you want to specifically find, you have to keep clicking through 50+ pages reading all the titles lol, a categorized version would be kewl

when do you think it will be up? (do you have a domain yet or getting one?) wanna do a "buddy link"?

Probably not for a while because there's a lot of scripting behind it to make it all work smoothly. I'm a little short on cash as well so I'll probably end up having to apply for a free one at Hey.nu or somewhere.
