Does anybody know where I can get some pictures of plants/Trees on a black background so that I can texture a plain with it and then set it to transparent?
I imagine this is the best way to make plants/trees in a game - either have two plains crossed over or set the plains to the cameras orientation...or does anybody know of any other way? I'll need to have loads of plants/trees in my game though...

Thanks
Robin

Unfortunately you are as well just getting hold of some pics and spending hours masking them out. I remember 10 years ago there was programs that generated fractal bushes and trees, something like that would be cool - I have used Vue DuEsprit 2 to render trees, but it isn't a lot of fun and you still need a lot of masking, or an alpha layer.

Of course, you could try drawing them by hand, you don't have to be picasso to draw a bush.

If you can catch a very blue, uncloudy sky then perhaps you may be able to wipe it easily, meaning you'll have to take the photo lying on your back at the tree's foot....

You can also use different channels to easily make the mask using greytones.

The eaisest way has monetary implications...Buy Vue D'esprit which is a complete realistic 3D landscape rendering and animation package then take a few shots of the beautiful trees shipped with it under a completely Black sky and then wipe it out using DB.

Try that Van

Of course, the best method, commercially speaking,is that you would make the tree yourself and load them into a renderer...There was a tree software called Tree Generator or Tree Maker, don't remember.

If I've seen it all before, why's this bus taking me back again? @_@

if you look on the resources pages (off the main site) you'll find plenty of sites to download pictures from.

Alternatively putting tree into googles image search finds loads.

Windtech - as Van rightly says it isn't as simple as taking a photo of a tree with a camera - because they would need to be on a completely black background so that you can then set it to transparentand the black parts would not show - tkaing a picture and then drawing around the edge in black would take days, so i was wondering if there were any already done, and i need trees so i can't put a piece of paper behind a tree - and you don't get many decent palm trees around here anyway.

TheNVS - thanks for the link - am downloading then now.

Actarus - i'll try finding models of trees and then rendering them on a black background - thanks for the idea.

There was some trees code made by Tom Paynter - it included loads (ok about 6) images of trees all masked out for you.

I've uploaded the files for you.
