been there, seen it, it didn`t surprise me, the server has been up for about a year or getting close to that, any time soon the allocation will expire and down will go RGT, the name will disapear whatever happens, it seems the US distributer is no longer able to supply a service, I wonder what happened there?, not a happy day when they do go , this forum should start getting some more trade, although I think most of the RGT regulars are here already.

I wouldnt say most of the regulars are here yet, but it is only a matter of time before this forum will get crowded (over-crowded even?). I still wonder what has happened to Guy though, has he just disappeared into thin air?

No idea. One t hing which annoyed me slighly about RGT was his knack of putting large advertisment / messages at the top of the page. Have you seen the latest message - at 1024x768 it fills a whole screen!

I hope Guy is okay ...

I wish they would just move over here instead of creating their own forum. Quite frankly, the only reason the communities seem different is because they are very aggressive towards Apollo. I *knew* this was going to happen some day, a rift between the community forums-- the thing that annoys me so much is that either few other people saw it, or few other people cared. This could hurt TGC-- not hugely, but still some-- if people used to going to the RGT site for updates find it dead...

I think it is dying anyway, I go over there frequently and the only section that has frequent postings is the wild west, there have been no new entries in the subject threads for days at a time, at one time this was the quite forum if you recall, nowdays it`s the other way round.

- In the beginning there was nothing
- Then DBS ceated the darkbasic forums. They saw it, and they saw it was good
- Then the DBS forums went away and all traffic from DBS site was directed to GuyS's forums
- GuyS creates RGT
- DBS launch new DBP site with new forums, traffic is directed there
- Apollo forums quiet at first
- RGT goes down, all move over here (me included)

- RGT forums come to a close

It's not just happened now has it? Wasn't it a while ago when rgt went down for a few days? I knew at least.

TGC have been fulfilling RGT's backlog of orders IIRC. All updates are hosted on the TGC site now, and most people would have hopefully been going there for a while.

A more proper timeline would be:

--In the beginning, there was Lee, and Lee had a Vision

--Lee created DarkBASIC software with Malcolm and Rick

--DBS created some forums

--Rich joins DBS (perhaps out of place)

--DBS created some updated forums that worked much better

--Mike joins DBS (perhaps out of place)

--A lot of time passes as DB gets updated and the community grows

--Guy makes DarkEDIT

--Pro is announced, the user base is happy

--The forums shut down, Guy makes some temporary ones

--The forums stay down, Guys' forums stay up as a replacement

--Pro is secretly being developed in DBDN

--The new Apollo forums launch, the community splits

--Pro is released to a happy user base

--Time passes as Pro is updated

--Guy goes offline for an extended period for unknown reasons

--Guy says he'll be back in not very long

--The new site launches, it is popular

--RGT closes, forums go down

--The future is unknown

I think "rich joins DBS" shoud go after "Pro is released", he joined 1st jan 03.

I made a history of the forums and not software, I think if I did my beginning would be:

In the beginning, there was nothing.
Then they created DirectX for the pros, and BASIC for the amateurs
and Lee made a boundary between the two, and he named it "DarkBASIC"

On the first day he got it to say "Hello, world!"
On the second day he added the sync command (â„¢)
On the third day he made it do 3D
On the fourth day, he added the maths
And on the fifth day, he added some more
On the sixth day, he added an awful IDE
On the seventh day he rested, and saw that it was good

On the eight day, he got to work on patch 1

Yes, I know he wasn't technicly a DBS memeber, but he's been around helping them with webpages and been a forum member for much, much longer than that, so I consider that 'joining' .

I worked full time for DBS/TGC 1st Jan this year. I have been working (paid) for them since 2000. I did free work for them from 1999 to 2000 some time. Mike was an employee before me btw.

As for the RGT thing, it's a shame but that's life. I'm tempted to offer space on our server for whatever new forum they want to create, but it seems at complete odds with our current strategy that I'm reluctant to do so (especially given the vocal "views" of Apollo over there!). I wish them well in finding a new home and only hope it's a stable one that doesn't put them out of pocket. I'll gladly post update news on there just as I do on RGT.

I would like to know what happened, I know that there was some bad feelings between TGC and RGT.

Seems to be normal, like BB and IG going at each other.

There was no bad feeling between TGC and RGT. We had to remove the links to RGT on a simple "bad for business" level because orders could not be fulfilled. If Guy was to come back and say "I'm operational again" then I'm sure we'd carry on from where we left off. The forums themselves have always been separate, animosity between those two communities (and there's isn't really that much of it) has nothing to do with the owning companies. Just wanted to make that clear. We've done nothing but support RGT and would again.

The RGT forums are far from finished!

The administration team has setup the successor to RGT over at http://www.dannywartnaby.co.uk/rgt/ . We are in the process of informing the existing user base of the changes so that they can sign up on the new forums.

We have much planned for this incarnation of the RGT community. Eventually the site will transform into a fully fledged DarkBASIC Professional game development site. Obviously the site will under-go a name change as we can not use the ‘Real Game Tools’ trademark.

Financially we can easily sustain the forums for extended periods of time, the admin team are very resourceful and the site is in no danger from going down due to lack of funds.

Somehow I doubt we'll get a lot of RGT users, if we were going to get them then we'd of had them already and the reason we haven't is because I don't think they like us lol. At the moment they all look to be moving over to the new forums anyway.

some creatures feel its essential to guage things on which is the best etc.. Its a stupid mentality that creates rifts. I hate this but i love that type nonsense.

frankly Im sad to see RGT go, not many people are supportive here at its twighlight and would prefer to take the community away from Guy S site without even asking him. Sure you know its going down, but how about you wait a little longer and perhaps guy would reply.

you know most of those histories actually missed out both of the original forums that Rick put up for us
Rich ended up doing the 3rd one and the 3rd site's revamp actually made the place look kinda professional ... then that was taken down within 24hrs and we ended up getting RGT temporarily for 8months whilst apollo was being totally remade.

thats pretty much the forums histories, i think the first was a simple one like phpBB 1.0 then it become a yaBBe, apollo, rgt started of with a different one too then Guy used yaBBe (which sluged everything) can't remember what the first was, x-something or other.

so when you look at it this is actually like the what, 6th incarnation of the DB forums - the 5th site overhaul ... and rgt's gone through 2 face changes & forum changes itself.

thats alot of changes for only 4years of business
hopefully now we have a more stable look and feel to the place.

Lee bought and installed UBB (the Perl version) originally. Traffic got too busy, the forum kept falling over and posts got lost. I wrote a convertor to convert the data files and user accounts to Phorum (www.phorum.org), an Open Source forum package I had been using and developing for some months. You can still download my UBB to Phorum convertor from the Phorum web site. This worked perfectly, handled a massive volume of posts and users and stayed in place for quite a while.

When the "new" DB site went live we moved to YaBB because everyone wanted all of those "cool" features. It was a total nightmare, the PHP code behind YaBB was utter crap and the SQL design behind that even worse. It crippled our server, so we took the forum offline when RGT started theirs. It stayed this way while Apollo was built. The version you're looking at now is the original Apollo code, heavily modified, enhanced and optimised for pure speed - enough that I classify it as a Version 2.

That pretty much sums it all up.

can't say i've ever really liked yaBBe or UltimateBB ... i mean even on my fast connection UBB takes like 20seconds to load - surely that just isn't right for a forum?

and think it was XMB, its so hard to keep track when everything changes so often to really get comfortable.
i always though that the first forum up with the DB Site look (which to be honest i obsolutely loved the look of!) was the original apollo.

i have a question though, if GuyS is really out of the picture now. Does this mean that TGC are looking for someone else to create & maintain thier main products IDE?

True, Rich did say that... However he didn't say anything else. Usually when someone says they know something and then don't expand upon it, it means that the information is none of our business.

As much as I would like to know what happened to Guy as well, I think that the option to explain his situation is up to him. If he chooses to tell us then good, but if not then that is his right.

I'm pretty sure Guy's physical condition is alright, as he was able to post here on Apollo and on RGT the reason for his absense (only to be followed by another, but...)... however, there could be a thousand things keeping him from the computer at this time. All aspects of real life take precedence over online business.

Why should he have to explain anything to you or anyone?

If he's not around at the moment then you can bet that he has a damned good reason to be somewhere else.

In the meantime, I will look forward to when Guy starts posting again and will welcome him back without questions if or when he does so.

Hopefully, people will leave him alone and not make his life hell when he does come back.
