I've move the viewing of character illustrations and descriptions to the first post and will update it there from now.

The Map Phase is almost playable will take a while longer.

New character added.

Those look awsome. Are you doing these by hand?!?! if so, Killer, if I may say so myself! Especially like the Frozen Bow on the first new character(Cylum).(I'm a fan of any character automatically if they have ties to Ice or water-based stuff!)

EDITED))))

This is looking great I can't wait to play it.

You are a very good artist, but I must say that your male characters look feminine. I don't know if that is by a certain style or by accident, but just thought I'd mention it.

@Dark Dragon
Yes these are hand drawn on the computer and thanks!

@tiresius
Quote: "your male characters look feminine"
Yeah I notice that too especially on Zatsuo, I've had a few friends mistaken that he is female. I don't draw as much as I code so this would be consider an accident however these are still not the final versions I'm still learning as I go both drawing and coding.

How about some strategic points on map, like mines or villages? Players would fight to take them from each other and have some kind of bonuses. Like, if you conquer centaur village (dunno if it's ok with your lore but just an example), you can recruit centaur troops, or when you capture a gold mine, you have more gold income, statues could give morale boosts or watchtowers could prevail being sneak attacked or something.

I don't know if you want to make it this complicated but it looks great so far anyway, better and better every day

@Garion
Yes you bring up a good point, but as this is my first attempt at this kind of game I plan to keep it as simple as possible so I can at least finish it but I like those ideas and thanks!

I finally finished the 7th character portrait. It wasn't very hard but just haven't found time to start coloring the rough draft until now. Progress is getting slower and will be even slower in the up coming months as I'll be away from home for a few months.

Wow it feels great to be back. A little bit of freedom is refreshing. If you are wondering, NO I was not in jail. I tell ya military training is an awsome experience. It's time to start catching up and I got alot of great new ideas to add.

Nice demo I did like that old battle system, but I'm sure this one will turn out better in the end. I had a look at the source code and I must say I was surprised by how organized it was! You've inspired me to do the same (have lots of short include files) in my future programs, so thank you .

Keep up the good work, I can't wait to see what this will become.

For a time I have been moving away from the original idea and leaning towards Final Fantasy Tactics because embarrassingly I was stuck with a few coding problems with the skills and effects but after learning a ton of things from my different approach I decided to return to the roots of this project and finish what I started. Fruit Wars has returned to a 100 troops vs 100 troops battle.

During my detour I managed to finish all of the character sprites and even fixed up the old ones. I learned lots of other graphical techniques and coding structures."

Ahh thanks, it took a bit to draw them out

A while ago someone suggested to place trees into the non map area, after stumbling for a bit I learned a very effective way to do it with minimal process and memory loss. It also ended up looking very nice.

Looking at how many characters are on screen at a time, how well does this run?

Hey Ashingda,

I'm trying to find a download link to a hold of your demo and have a go of it, but I can't find any links anywhere in the thread (perhaps it's just because it's late and I'm tired). Can you post a link to the latest version please?

Thanks

@Agent
There wasn't any links because I took it off. I was working on updating a new one and just got done .

The demo .rar has three versions. Two battles with random AI and one speed test. Note that the programs do not run in 16bit color mode. It's something to do with the color editing that I overlooked.

Download the demo here or the 2nd post.

It's only like this in the first demo.

As far as I've tested it, it did.

I'm gonna restart it a couple of times and see what it does.

edit:
so I've redownloaded it and it works fine now. Must have been some corrupt data or program interfering with it.

Controls:
Your left 4 fingers goes onto keys "A" "S" "D" "F"

F = Access Menu
D = Cancel
A & S = Other options but currently disabled.

While in the menu:

Formation = Control your troops
Skill = Skills...
Retreat = Exits battle but it's not implemented yet.

By the way let me know how your speed test turned out.

I've been working up a big update, will post it once I get all the phases linked and draw more faces. I tell ya, designing the user interface is HARD work! Been going back and forth trying to get something that I like. There's a lot of artwork required at this phase and that sucks up a lot of time.

Got three new skills done. Creating the fireball spell was easier than I thought. The lightning spell was a bit tricky, I'm so glad it's over with. Soul Arrow may need some touch ups but it's working well for now.

Completed another hard to create skill. I forgot I had the variables used with this set as a float and caused lots of confusing.

You get some weird effects when using floats and screen cordinates sometimes
I have noticed it my self when iam using floats for movement in my fake 3d engine and then have to solve it when drawing it on screen.

Yeah, I hate that, too.

But, on topic, this looks pretty cool.

I like the earth spell, looks really nice. Do you plan on making any water type spells? Those are fun, but usually pretty hard to make.

*downloading now*

[EDIT]
Okay, I tried it. Nice start. I did a speed test as you asked.

Here is what I found:

With all troops alive: ~200FPS
With all troops dead: ~400FPS
Skills seem to drop frame rate ~50FPS! Might want to work on that.

Here are my PC specs:

OS: 64 bit Vista
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon X1250
Processor: Dual Core AMD Turion at 2.0GHz
RAM: 4.0GB
