Another random post because Microsoft doesn't really accept bug reports...

This isn't much of a bug but I noticed, at least on my comp, when I double click "file", "edit", "view", "tools", or "help" (but not favorites) in IE6 the word disappears. Hm, wonder why?

Dosen't happen with me .

It might have to do with the current view system Windows is using. It's the reason why images drag when you drag one folder on top of another, and you get all those view visual artifacts like trailing mice when your computer is going slow. Windows Longhorn uses a totally new system. Good reason to upgrade.

If it does slip, they'll probably release a WinXP Second Edition like they did for Windows 98 because they need to bring out an OS every few years to keep up their profits.

I would be unstoppable if I could just get started...

Which'll be good for those people who are afraid of computers. However, it will of course left more technical people do technical things.

I think it was mentioned it will have a new version of DirectX (unfortunately it seems they'll be keeping the stupid COM interface) and IE7 (which will be the last that can be downloaded for previous OS's).

Hopefully they'll get rid of DOS completely this time (CMD.EXE is no longer required).

will longhorn have applications that know where they live regardless of being moved from its installed path.? I doubt it..

macs have done this for a long time as well as name your hard drive fruitbowl if you wanted.

It still ticks me off . The drive letters are completely hidden. Yes, WinFS is optional, but without it you have to revert to the old system and get NONE of the new features. Stage 1 and 2 functionality both use WinFS, it's not optional with them.

I cant see the problem with drive letters going - any system dlls will be pathed, and any of your program files should be read relative to where you start the program.

Indi, you can name the harddrive anything you like (up to 12 characters).

With the drive letters going does this mean they will be using a unix style hierarchy. Xp appears to use a kind of half-botched version at the moment.

Something like this? obviously microsoft won't use any standard prefering you have a 50+ character long home directory like on xp.

It really does seem like they're making it for total morons who don't want to figure out how to type in a file path or figure out file formats. Ignorance is fine, but those things are easy to learn. That change is just fine with me as long as they also develop things on the 'user with brains' front, but it appears they aren't.

Then again, they don't have too... most of those people are already either doomed to update Windows or sworn against it, their main untapped market is the people who are still shying away from computers I suppose.

Have you never used linux? I think that type of file sytem hierarchy is what they will use. Or a barstadisation of it which is more compilcated and less logical

Win xp is currently half the old system half the new system.

They have to do something a lot of windows users are still on the old win9x and nt4 and have little reason to upgrade. They need to do a lot to get these people to upgrade.
I wouldn't be surprised if newer hardware stats to be released without proper support for win98 forcing upgrades.

Having dumb users is proberly in their best intrests unfortunatly. It's much more difficult for them to move to competing products. They have to pay people to fix their pc. The people who fix the pc will pay for microsoft qualifications which can be recomended all over the os.

So winfsfs is just a fs based on a database. Looks like as with every other new windows version it's going to wipe out any performace gains that the new hardware will bring.

There are heaps of uses for the Command Prompt and why anyone would want to get rid of it is beyond me. I constantly use it for pinging my LAN server and bringing up statistics among other things. And why do you want it gone so much? If you don't like it then just don't open it - there's no need to remove it completely.

Well, there is no reason to keep it - you ping and rename and copy and delete from the GUI, either using another program or built in routines (my router has a web-interfaced ping for example). The reason it should be gone is to remove the trouble of having to interface it with the GUI in Longhorn, where they could be doing other things instead. Maybe have it as an optional down, perhaps, but not installed by default.

And besides, why does anyone want to run DOS programs now ? It adds another layer of possible problems to Longhorn, which isn't really needed.

It is actually still in Alpha, not Beta, so it is at an extremly buggy state right now. And the expected release date is summer of 2004.

From what i heard though, is there is still going to be a DOS Based Command prompt interface built in, but the info there is not completly accurate. I would enjoy the DOS interface still built in becuase i love to annoy my friends with a good old batch file.



I would also like a DOS interface so i can play DOS games, like Duke Nukem, and Mechwarrior 2, or Command and Conquer. To take out the DOS interface would be like casterating a man, it removes it's soul and pride, and the ability to do some fun stuff.

In the end, if they were to take DOS interface out of Windows, i would just have to dual boot XP and Longhorn, For all my life, Because with out a DOS command Prompt, i'm bored as hell, and then i can't makefun of my teachers and other student without having to say it to there face.

Liquidz, that's a very old shot .

It's not in Alpha or Beta-- it's going through Microsoft's development stage; they use their own little morale-boosting terms. 'Milestones' are what the builds all the way until release are called, last I heard.

i know it's old, but if you check more recent shots of the My computer interface, you will see that drive letters are still used, because if it did not have drive letters, there would be lossed support for programs designed for XP and down.

All the screens I've seen from the last two milestones do not display drive letters. And Microsoft has said they are removing them from the interface.

Well i once sent a Virus through the network that i made, that replaced Sol.exe(solitare) with a unbeatable game.... hahaha... the teachers were so pissed.

Well you don't have to have the fancy effects on, Fancy effects are for people who fell like wasting System Resources so there windo can fade in and out, an dfrankly when i first saw XP doing this, it made me pretty sick, and it took mr a week to find the option to turn things to normal... plain..boring.

So i hope to god LH has the goddamn option to turn of the supposed 3d effects, because i enjoy performance, not a buncha flahsy flashing sh*t.

XP has apps like TweakUI which can modify everything to look like 98/2000 so I don't see why Longhorn won't also see the life of such programs.

It'll be optional of course - apparently they'll be 2/3 Tiers along the lines of Tier 1 : Full display, Tier 2 : Windows 2000 look, Tier 3 : Modified Safe Mode or such.

Ok hmm just saw this. I'm not going to enter a Windows devlopment discussion because I would get too into it

However on the topic of the original IE double click thing, its not actually the text that dissappears, if you look VEERY carefully, preferably on a big monitor (Mines 25 inch )

Click it once, and the black text becomes white, and the grey background becomes blue. Double clicking sends the blue back to grey, but the text remains white, meaning that its actually white text on light grey background, which is very difficult to see

lol Not an important point at all, but from a programming perspective its easier to understand what's going wrong. If the text completely dissappeared it would be a more serious error

I stand corrected - its been a while since I last read the Longhorn stuff.

As most (if not all) of the GUI graphics should be done by the graphics, it should be very smooth - especially with a nice powerful card.

Myself, I'm quite looking forward to it...

WinFS will sort of take away drive letters.

According to PCFormat anyway - they did a bit about it a while ago now - and I cant see why it wont be optional.

The whole point about Palladium is that (apparently) it will only run signed programs - therefore anything I write cant be run without (possibly) some sort of acknowledgement from the user, anything you write cant run will be the same. The only time you wont run into any problems are those signed by Microsoft (or possibly a third party).

Therefore the only time that a virus will be run is when the user explicitly states that they want to run the virus.

In a corporate environment any user intervention messages probably wont be allowed, thus no virus will be able to be run.

That is, until someone works out a way around it.

Well that's just the point... Palladium is Microsoft's grip on the future of computers. With it made neccessary, you have to get a permit from MS to be able to run anything at all on the machines everyone will be using. Why would they throw away a stranglehold like that? We all know their business tactics!
