as far as I know (i dont have 3dsmax) you need some video-editing/compositing software. For example Adobe After Effects. first you put down your video that you shot, then make some 3D elements that match the camera angle/lighting/etc, and place them on top of the video footage, blending them together appropriately.

good luck, it's really really hard

depends how you wish to go about it...
as has been noted you'll have to use some Video Composition Software,

alot of professionals use Shake by Apple, this is because Shake has the ability to interface directly into the software you use...
Max/Maya/XSI/Houdini/Mirai and render via a 3rd party suchas Renderman, Messiah:Render or Mental Ray
however this said the price is $4,999; even i have an older version cause it's just so damn expensive.

A cheaper one is Adobe Premier Pro as this'll edit video nicely, and is around $350 last time i checked.
But really for an amature production even that is a little much.

There is always doing it in Max itself, it won't have quite the same effects; but you can use the video ram layer to project the video as you're rendering your scene almost like a background really.

This all said, you really need to sync both realtime and cinematic video stream; similar lighting rigs, camera positions, etc... else you could find it looking really bad really quickly.

Adobe After Effects can. But if your talking about photoshop that would be a no. You will need to use alpha channels in max or blue/green screen while filming the video or both depending on what you wanna do. There are several free video-editing/compositing programs floating around the net. And several tutorials too. Try this link: http://www.theforce.net/theater/tutorials.shtml

You can do it entirely in max depending on how much camera matching you need to do...

fast way would just be to import the movie as the diffuse map of a material and apply it to a plane locked to the camera...

I believe 3DS Max 5 comes with a tutorial on how to do it, but I have no idea about version 3.
