Hi ababagalamaga,

Welcome to the forums. Hope you find it as rewarding as the rest of us have. This forum is often my first port of call whenever I have an awkward error on my PC. There’s usually someone who can help . It’s also an interesting place to investigate or to just browse generally for ideas and inspiration as well as being inhabited by loads of helpful people.

Oops. Sorry, didn't see your reply at the time (this is my every 6 months or so check in). These days too used to forums sending an Email about replies. Does this forum these days do this?

Anyway, yep still in Cyprus. Apart from a few years back in the UK (girlfriend, now wife, wasn't ready to move to Cyprus) I've racked up about 9 years out here. Got to love the weather!

Thanks for the link to the codez! Ah, those were the days. I'd give anything for those times, when trolls were rare and just cheeky posts....

Cheers

It is a bit quieter eh? I think the recent(ish) activity by TGC on Steam specifically has me visiting the site after nearly a decade long hiatus.

Mostly lurking though. This is my second post in several years.

Became a bit of an indie game celebrity. Co-founded Vlambeer and made some well received games (Ridiculous Fishing, Nuclear Throne), and more recently he's become quite well known as a regular speaker at conferences and things.
Wonder how many other TGC alums have made good? Reckon we could get a blue plaque put up.

I'm still here since 2005, started way back early 80s using the Vic-20 (aged 12), BBC micro +, Amiga 500+ doing basic, assembly. Am now 50, blimey how time flies. Doesn't seem that long ago we were all huddling around our hand held bulky space invader games at school.

Pretty much what flashing snall said, and like Bored of the Rings, I started out on a Vic-20 too.
So, I have always loved Dark Basic (classic and pro), and BASIC is why I love AppGameKit too!

Figured I'd poke my head in here. Was mostly active on the old official forums and a few of the other communities that seem to be long gone. I haven't done any game development since I became a professional programmer, sadly. I've been getting the itch lately though. Hello to anyone that might remember me.

I don’t know how much longer this forum is going to be kept online, but, it would be a good idea to submit your favorite threads to the wayback machine so they can live on even after the forums get shutdown -> https://archive.org/web

Some of these names look familiar. @LBFN, @GG, @Jeku etc. how're you all holding up?

Haven't looked at this website in probably 2 years. I am looking at it now though, because I started working on an open source and cross-platform reimplementation of the DarkBASIC language and I've basically forgotten everything about DarkBASIC and its gloriously horrible syntax.
https://github.com/thecomet/opendarkbasic

In testing my parser I've stumbled across more than a few curious "features" of DBP. For example:

This compiles and prints 42. That makes no sense.

In DBC, this will print "2":

These days I'm mostly active on Discord, so feel free to hit me up if you want to chat. TheComet#5387

I'm curious to know why 0 evaluates true in your DBP example. The DBC example, though odd, does make sense when you think about how it assigns memory registers and what not. I don't think classic attempted any sort of validation on what was to the left of the equal sign. It saw a 1 and placed 2 at 1's position in memory.

Yeah in the DBC case the interpreter creates a new variable called "1" and assigns it the value of 2.

Quote: "I'm curious to know why 0 evaluates true in your DBP example"

It doesn't. It turns out that DBP doesn't care where you put global declarations. The very existence of them, even if the code is unreachable, causes the compiler to define them anyway. This also works for example:

I haven't tried this but I'm assuming it would also print 42:

[EDIT] It does.

Seeing the old names and avatars is all very nostalgic.

Still lurk from time to time! Though haven't logged in in ages.

I can't believe the forum emoticons are still the same!

Started out with DarkBasic Classic back when I was about 12. I'm a professional software engineer today. DarkBasic and this community had a huge impact / influence on me.

Funny to see all the old names!

Virtual Nomad just followed me on itch.io, so I thought to check back here! I see lots of familiar names still checking in recently, which is amazing. I still make lots of games, I work at a professional studio and I also made some mildly successful indie games. It all started here, so it's all of your faults, haha! Thanks! I mostly use Unity now, though.

I saw tha_rami once at GDC a few years back but I didn't have a chance to actually flag him down and talk to him.

I published a game!
