Thanks. I have been looking but I'll look again now. I have replaced the MP40 with a pair of Colts now and it looks and plays tonnes better. Both games are looking quite cool now so I'll get some enemies added to both and some more animations ready for Tutopia. Is anyone else still looking at this thread?

Yep. How about designing a control system? You don't have to code it if you don't want to but just give me ideas. Currently I am using w,a,s,d to move, left click for speed attacks, right click for fierce attacks, space for finishing moves and mouse for moving the camera. I'll try and get an example of the movement up then you can make suggestions. Other than that if you think of anything you want to help with then let me know.
As a side note, my FPS engine is nearly complete. It will then be a case of just making a load of different levels. More screens and a demo of that soon hopefully.

Animations loaded like that are 2D aren't they? Either way, I have it sorted now I think. Sorry. That was a stupid thing to ask you to do when you didn't know what was going on!
I created a scripting system before. It wasn't too hard. What is it for?
My fps is looking really cool now. Well I think so! If any of you have played Sudeki then do you remember how if you fought as Ailish or Elco you went fps style? I was thinking of including this in my RPG. What do you think?

Hi again. I just looked back through my original post in DarkBASIC discussion and realised what a prat I am being! I was getting tonnes done back then and just enjoying it. I'm starting to take it too seriously and I'm nowhere near as happy with what I have as with what I had back then. I'm seriously going to kick myself into gear and get some stuff done. I had pretty much an engine done back then and full plans for what I wanted to do. Why the hell did I just give up on it? Damn my stupidity and laziness! I really am going to try and get something decent up again soon. Sorry to everyone and if I start slacking again let me know!

O.K. Here are my current plans and unless they prove impossible or you lot make suggestions I'm going to stick to them rather than keep changing my mind.

Game Play
I'm going to aim for mostly hack and slash with RPG bits thrown in. I think for now going for a too deeply story based game would be too hard and may not get finished. I'm planning one of two things and would like your opinion:
Mission based - Like LOTR:ROTK. You have to run through the missions in order but they are not directly linked. You can't save mid-level. As you go through you get given new weapons to make the game more varied. Once you complete the whole game you can go back through all the levels with any weapon.
Normal - Can save mid-game. You don't select a level to go to and levels follow directly. This would be better if I'm going to include a story line. Battles occur like in Sudeki. When you enter certain areas your exits get blocked. You have to win the fight to proceed. Levels would be joined by the player going to a certain place or killing a boss. The screen would fade out and the new level would load.

Which idea do you lot think would be better?

Control System
My control system so far is like this:
W,A,S - Move forwards, right and left.
D - Complete turn. The player will keep walking in that direction until it is released.
Left Click - Speed attack.
Right Click - Fierce attack.
Space Bar - Finishing move
The camera follows the player smoothly from behind and the camera height can be adjusted by moving the mouse up and down.
I'm planning to add:
Q - Parry
E - Use/Action
I will also add magic attacks and combos by mixing the other attacks in quick succession. I already know how to do this and have done it before.

Levels
As much as I would love to outdoor terrains, I can't model them at all and the advanced terrain plugin requires internet access and I don't have internet access on my computer. They are also hard when it comes to collision. I will be including some simple outdoor sections but most levels will be indoors or based around a building. Levels will include:
NPCs to talk to and possibly fight with you.
Monsters - well duh!
Items to collect.
Interactive items. eg. A breakable wall to access another part of the level.
Atmospheric effects like fog/fire/water etc. - hopefully!
Areas to go to complete levels.
Bosses.
All levels will be lightmapped. Pickups will be in breakable crates/barrels or treasure chests.

Weapons
Player usable weapons will hopefully include:
Twin swords
Sword
Axe
Flail - animating the chain will be an asolute nightmare but if it works it would be so cool!
I also thought of including a staff for magic attacks or some kung-fu style fighting.

Level Editor
The level editor will:
Import the .x files and place them accordingly.
Place interactive objects.
Place pickups.
Place enemy spawnpoints.
Place the player.
Add effects.
Add the target of the level.

Help
Mainly help with effects. I have only recently looked into these seriously. Any help with fast fire/smoke/fog etc. effects will be greatly appreciated. I've got some fire and smoke code that Baggers released but any other help would be brilliant.

I hope to show you some progress soon and please let me know of any ideas.

O.K. Well here is a fire effect I made.

I used some textures that Baggers gave but it is all my own code. It runs at 265fps on my machine.
AMD Athlon XP 2400+, Radeon 9600, 256Mb RAM.
A still picture does it no justice.

I think a normal gameplay are better than the mission based because you can save at every moment of the game and don't need to finish the mission to save. The fire lokk great.

Yeah looks really nice !...the texture came from the first frame of some free explosion generator !....and yeah the screens never do justice to the real program!...How are you handling the particles, id love to get another coders methodolgy for making particle engines.

Well it is nowhere near as advanced as the code you gave. I just though I might as well try and do it for myself and it worked at 470fps! I'm still playing with it a bit but I am using really simple code to do it and it looks really cool!
Sett - Thanks. That is the same idea I had. I'd prefer that to mission based it will just be a bit harder! I'm currently working on the battle system. Loads of arrays and stuff! Not got too far yet but I only just started and I have had no real hold backs.

Cool routine, yeah mine eat some fps with the features, like the time based scaling, fading and such. But if you dont need them then your option really has its kick !

Jazz Jackrabbit was a brilliant game and the video I got of your 3D version does it loads of justice. Good luck with it.
I've now got it so you can knock the AI monster around. Only one at the moment but it is in a for next loop to cover all the AI monsters. Still got to add a bit before I release a full demo where you can kill a few enemies but progress is good.
I thought of something else I want your opinion on. What style of music should I use? I've currently got my guitar music on there but I could use a keyboard to get some more varied sounds.

Well id say that depends on the style you want really, i mean many games are brought to life by the music, eg mario ! but id never have music behind say quake2...they had a groovy track but i never really had it on as it changed the mood too much.
It is a hard call...basically you'd have to get someone to listen while playing the game and say it feels right.

You have an FPS game in the screenies as well.

Very nice movie there. Only one thing: are the animations supposed to be that slow? the motions were good, but i think a bit of added speed would be good

Strangely enough if you set fraps to your actual framerate rather than a lower on the game will run faster. E.g. I used to video capture at 30 fps which slowed the hell out of my game running at 60, set fraps to 60fps and it catures at around 57fps !
Not sure if you do that alreay...anyway back on track:

I love the character style its perfectly simple!...im looking foreward to the demo, however looking at the charcter style i would say your music is slightly of...i would personaly pic something less technical guitar and more fun...a bit more arcady if you like,some thing a little more bold and crazy, as apposed to guitar which sounds "fine/thin"...its hard to explain im more imagining the music as i would see it...Im sounding like a crazy person so i'll see if i can find a sample.

Thanks. Fraps will only let me set it up to 30fps. I'm not sure exactly what you mean about music so I'll wait for the sample. I just love playing guitar so that is why I used it. Would something a bit more like the music from Jazz 2 fit?

Yeah. I hope so. Only just realised that dbspot was down.
I spent yesterday optimising the AI code and gained about 8-10fps. I then added in a sword trail like Bear Crazy suggested yonks ago! That made me lose a bit of speed but it does look quite cool.

Well it appears DBSpot is back up. At the moment the game is running at about 120fps with 3 enemies at a time. I am also able to spawn enemies whilst the game is going so it seems like there are more than there are. I'll try and get some more done over the weekend.

Thanks. It does look better now it has the sword trail. I'm now going to start making some more enemies and magic attacks. I hadn't done any drawing for about a year and I used to love it and I was pretty good. I've just started to get back into it.
So you are saying I need drums, bass and synth? I can easily do the drums and bass with my drum machine and I'll have a go at synth.

I now have a new enemy fully animated and in the game; a spider. I'm hoping to get a full level done pretty soon and then I'm going to have a go at a boss level. I haven't been able to try some new music yet but I will soon. I'll try and get some new screens or a video and possibly a demo up soon.

The Tal artwork is too nice and Tauron would look cool as a more rougish layed back version of him and not nearly as serious and make sure he doesn't say things like "I'll stain the floor with your insides!" or "Demons in my Path Die(Echoes)..."

Yeah I wasn't going to have him exactly as that would raise some copyright issues. Besides, with my modelling skills he is out of the question.
Today I made the HUD and magic effects. I was going to put a trailer movie up but for some reason I can't connect to DBSpot at the moment. It told me my login was incorrect. I'll try another time.

I may have found someone else to help with media. I am waiting for their reply. Tutopia now has a new sound track. The next thing to do is add in action zones which when you go through triggers something so I'll have a go at that tomorrow. I still can't upload the video. Has DBSpot gone down?
