I've finished putting muzzle flashes in. Here's the one for the pistol. I can't show the other one yet, as it's atually borrowed from FPSC and since I'm covered by an NDA I can't show you

When I find a replacement I'll post it up.

Nice flash!

I haven't posted here for the last coupla days because I've been glued to the computer playing the new beta... Anyhow, here's my "grand manifesto" for beta3

Hawkeye's Manifesto of Merc2 beta3!
Ok, the following points are in no particular order, but rather as I think of them and put ‘em down…

When you sped up the animations for the shotgun, you forgot to change the cooldown time. So thus you fire one shot, wait for the anim to finish, then try to fire again and it has to wait another ½ second or so before it does so… A little annoying, but not too serious

Uzi reloading animation: you can hit r to reload then left click right away and it’ll skip the animation. Handy at times

Water is too dim to see properly—or maybe it’s just my old monitor Maybe a little more blue?

Grenade launcher is LOADS of fun!

Blood is a little extreme at times—you might want to put some sort of options menu in and make it so you can set the multiple of blood plains to emit. (i.e. 1.0x=normal, 0.0x=none at all, 20.6x=can’t see anything )

The bleeding soil is a little… strange Makes me think this is some sort of survival horror game when I play it

The quasi-ragdoll effects are awesome! There’s nothing like blasting some poor unsuspecting soul with the grenade launcher and seeing them fly off in the sky! Which reminds me, if you take a shotgun at point blank range and blast someone right at the edge of the world, they fly off and do this weird dance off in the great blue sky

The colt and 2x colt suck. I ended up replacing the gunshot sounds myself. I personally say you should replace them with mini-uzis! Oh yeah that’d be the one alright

The pistol’s model (weapon number 1) is pretty nice, but noone’s going to see it as it’s not that useful Try making it like a magnum or something… Add a little kick to life in the mercenaries world

What’s this weapon 12 I see? Chaingun, eh? Maybe if it had a better model

Minigun sfx need to be replaced—it needs to sound like a fearsome weapon belching 27 rounds a second instead of a team of chattering squirrels

Sniper rifle isn’t pointing at the crosshair… and I want more ammo for it!

You oughta to remove the enemy marker (the colored cone) above their heads when they’re under water—looks kinda weird the way it is now.

The enemies get stuck on a shooting animation long after their target is dead and there’s noone in sight. I ended up just shooting them to fix it Might explain why the bad guys are in the lead so often

I liked the old death cutscene better: you couldn’t move the camera off the map, and you got to see yourself die

The ejecting cartridge on the p-90 resets too quickly for me to see it—it gets maybe a inch out from the weapon and then it changes it’s mind and rushes back inside

The ammo/health cases can spawn on the edge of the map where you can’t get to them! Annoying when you’ve got static and need health.

Do the health/ammo cases respawn after you pick them up? Cuz after awhile I can’t seem to find any…

Music is a little dodgy… I ended up replacing the main game music (the one with the lyrics? yeah…) with a metal tune I had handy.

Jumping! I want jumping!

All the levels I’ve tried have the same skybox, yet you have several really nice looking ones in the media/skies folder… Maybe I’m just playing the wrong levels…

And once again, VERY NICE LOOKING GAME!! This had better be in the next newsletter… Rich? Do ya hear me?

~Hawkeye

Okay, alot of points so get ready for a mega post

Quote: "Sexy. "

Sexaaaay

Quote: "When you sped up the animations for the shotgun, you forgot to change the cooldown time. So thus you fire one shot, wait for the anim to finish, then try to fire again and it has to wait another ½ second or so before it does so… A little annoying, but not too serious "

I just chose a random number of milliseconds between shots - the animation speed will most likely alter depending on how fast the game is so it's hard to make the timing fit.

Quote: "Uzi reloading animation: you can hit r to reload then left click right away and it’ll skip the animation. Handy at times "

The animation's just a bit of a novely really - although I could add a little check to see if it's finished

Quote: "Water is too dim to see properly—or maybe it’s just my old monitor Maybe a little more blue?"

It's okay here - quite a dark blue but when up close it's quite nice. Almost surreal

Ditto. It's so faked it's fun That sound effect when it hits somebody is just amazing.

Quote: "Blood is a little extreme at times—you might want to put some sort of options menu in and make it so you can set the multiple of blood plains to emit. (i.e. 1.0x=normal, 0.0x=none at all, 20.6x=can’t see anything )"

It's been marginally toned down.

Quote: "The bleeding soil is a little… strange Makes me think this is some sort of survival horror game when I play it "

It'd mud!!

Quote: "The quasi-ragdoll effects are awesome! There’s nothing like blasting some poor unsuspecting soul with the grenade launcher and seeing them fly off in the sky! Which reminds me, if you take a shotgun at point blank range and blast someone right at the edge of the world, they fly off and do this weird dance off in the great blue sky "

I like it too - when the dieing animation plays at the same time, it actually looks real.

Quote: "The colt and 2x colt suck. I ended up replacing the gunshot sounds myself. I personally say you should replace them with mini-uzis! Oh yeah that’d be the one alright "

They do indeed. They're going to be removed from the final game. They're a relic from the very first gun set.

Quote: "The pistol’s model (weapon number 1) is pretty nice, but noone’s going to see it as it’s not that useful "

It is rather, isn't it.

Quote: "What’s this weapon 12 I see? Chaingun, eh? Maybe if it had a better model "

That's not for human use - that's the weapon you use when in the hovercraft. Did I let something slip then?

Quote: "Minigun sfx need to be replaced—it needs to sound like a fearsome weapon belching 27 rounds a second instead of a team of chattering squirrels "

I'm waiting for a model - then I can use some wonderful overlapping sound techniques to provide a real minigun that has a rotating barrel and sound that speed up.

Quote: "Sniper rifle isn’t pointing at the crosshair… and I want more ammo for it!"

Doesn't really matter, you only use it when zoomed in To get more ammo pick up an ammo pack.

Quote: "You oughta to remove the enemy marker (the colored cone) above their heads when they’re under water—looks kinda weird the way it is now."

Too much trouble Next time I play I'll have a look.

Quote: "The enemies get stuck on a shooting animation long after their target is dead and there’s noone in sight. I ended up just shooting them to fix it Might explain why the bad guys are in the lead so often "

Odd. It's designed so there's always a target for them. Only in the mission mode AI was there ever a chance AI stood idle.

Quote: "I liked the old death cutscene better: you couldn’t move the camera off the map, and you got to see yourself die "

I think you still can see yourself die?

Quote: "The ejecting cartridge on the p-90 resets too quickly for me to see it—it gets maybe a inch out from the weapon and then it changes it’s mind and rushes back inside "

That's to do with the model and not code Not the end of the world.

Quote: "The ammo/health cases can spawn on the edge of the map where you can’t get to them! Annoying when you’ve got static and need health."

Er.... it's not a bug, it's a feature.

Quote: "Do the health/ammo cases respawn after you pick them up? Cuz after awhile I can’t seem to find any…"

Yes.

Quote: "Music is a little dodgy… I ended up replacing the main game music (the one with the lyrics? yeah…) with a metal tune I had handy."

Can you post the music?

Thge music is a touch dodgy, in the middle it's good but around the edges it's tacky.

Quote: "Jumping! I want jumping! "

Why? (really - what is there to gain?)

Quote: "All the levels I’ve tried have the same skybox, yet you have several really nice looking ones in the media/skies folder… Maybe I’m just playing the wrong levels… "

Alpine definately has the polar one.

Death Valley & Desert have the desert one.

Mountain definately has the sunset one.

And the rest are the blue skies I think - if you want you can change the *.txt file in the levels folder to a different skiy (look under "[Sky]").

Quote: "And once again, VERY NICE LOOKING GAME!! This had better be in the next newsletter… Rich? Do ya hear me? "

Here's hoping

Quote: "That's a big muzzle flash! If you could drop by my shooting thread do you think you could help me with implementing one?"

Quite easy - get a plain with a muzzle flash texture, lock it to screen, ghost it then flicker it on and off when you fire

Quote: "Anyways it looks nice. Can't wait for the next demo, I just hope the AI area bit improved."

Well - it's harder There's no new tactics yet - primarily because I'm yet to see any posted here that could fit in seamlessly nad actually make a difference

I've tried the muzzle flash pasting to the screen but when I change the coardinates from a certain number in DBC it goes off screen.

But anyways back on topic. Jumping is so much fun and funny looking (when you have real multiplayer) that you have to add it in! Please ?

The Merc2 muzzle flash is a 2x2 plain positioned at 0.5,-0.15,1.94. Seems to work okay

Jumping... go on I'll have a crack at it in the morning.

Your muzzle flash probably shouldnt be ghosted by the way if you think about it you would really be able to see through one in real life if they did exist.

It's so quickly flickering the screen, you don't notice really

Plus - you don't get the nice transparency without ghosting.

with a .png image with a proper alpha channel, it should work, especially with the new transparency mode that was added with 5.6/7 (can't remember which)...

either way, progress on the game looks good!

Muzzle Flashes are cool. They do exist and there is a HUGE variation on them all.
But I agree with Walaber, DarkBASIC Professional supports a number of Alpha Channel formats:

Bitmap, PNG, TGA, and DDS. that can be exported from Photoshop or alike. Creating the Muzzle flashes in that would be best

Nice, as I said before, big improvement . I like the fuzzy near death effect, and the way the people fly everywhere with the rocket launcher.

A few things that I noticed...

- Pistol recoil stays up when you hold fire down.
- With the p-90, the default frame has the brass floating in mid-air. I may also have that problem, but maybe the gun hid it, i dunno .
- Dirt effects do look like blood , maybe if you used png or tga with alpha, instead of ghosting, then it'd look better?
- If you hit a person directly with the grenade launcher, the flame particles go all weird.
- There is a weird walking speed up when respawning.

Looking forward to the next demo .

Isn't it? Wasn't it? Marvellous!

Looks real good!

I have a question,
what is the players height and a size of the terrain (in DB units)?

Also what speed constant do you use?

The heightmap texture is white

Quote: "- Pistol recoil stays up when you hold fire down."

I know

Quote: "- With the p-90, the default frame has the brass floating in mid-air. I may also have that problem, but maybe the gun hid it, i dunno ."

Hmm yeah - I'll tinker with the frame numbers.

Quote: "- Dirt effects do look like blood , maybe if you used png or tga with alpha, instead of ghosting, then it'd look better?"

I seem to have no luck with alpha channels. I'll tone down dirt nad see what happens.

Quote: "- If you hit a person directly with the grenade launcher, the flame particles go all weird."

Yes - that was me experimenting with alpha channels

Quote: "- There is a weird walking speed up when respawning."

It's to do with teh frame rate dependant movement. After the respawn screen, the frame rate is mucked up for 1 second before being reset so for a ver yshort time you move at infinity speed.

Quote: "what is the players height and a size of the terrain (in DB units)?

Also what speed constant do you use?"

The world is a few hundred across and wide. The player is 7 uinits high. The camera moves at 0.6 unites per second @ 60fps, so it's faster when the game runs slower.

If the texture for the ice map is white, could it be that the light in the scene is coloured yellow?

That's my current suspicion. I don't have DBPro handy now - anybody remember if advanced terrain colours the light it uses to render shadows?

Yup, its one of the parameters in set terrain light.

It doesn't use rgb values though... But 1.0, 1.0, 1.0 gives bright white light. So i'd assume that as long as they are all the same value you will get varying shades of white light.

It also has a pretty nifty tool for making heightmaps. I actually found the texture map quality to be lacking, but that might just be their default textures .

Looks ace. Deserves it's sticky status! Are there plans to add buildings as it's no fun hiding behind hills? How about barrels, huts, destroyed trucks, sandbags etc? Would be sweet.

Thanks

Problem with buildings is that it'd require a pretty major rewrite. I've been playing around with an indoor engine I've written in CShop recently and that looks amazing. It's a battle of priorities now

Well, how about forgetting the indoor thing, but just going for external objects like a few cube walls and crates and buildings you can't enter? You can ignore complex collision if you keep the objects sides parellel with the axis and just check for collision within the cube.

Just an idea!

? where do biscuits come into this

cookies are doughy things with chocolate chips in

biscuits are anything else that is round and flat

onto more on topic things:

I think that Merc 2 is nearing its end. While there are hundreds of ther things I want to fit into this game, the game I think has reached its saturation point.

I'll most likely add a jump mode, fix a couple of bugs, make a "go back to main menu" item then release the game.

As far what's after that, you'll be pleased to know I've been messing around with... a first person shooter

Mercenaries was a third person shooter I was making a few years back in the original db. I did release a couple of demos, however I abandoned it when DBPro came out and made a new game, Mercenaries 2, with all the power of pro.

Hey DavidT, sorry for the long time since I got back to you. I have had a lot of stuff going on, but I decided I'd get to those maps and post em. I got a tiny map pack with 2 maps in it. They aren't my best work, but check em out!
