it is really easy to just select all three files in windows explorer and right-click>save to blahblah.zip., nice about 3 pages already. I think this should be stickied (great resource for game art)

But really? What does everyone think of my menu?

Ah, I found it. Nice, very nice. Could you make a few more of the planet at the bottom with stars and stuff around it images? They are very cool. What do you use to make the planets?

Quote: "I made the large planet in Bryce, rendered on a black background. (I used the old glass sphere around the camera trick to get the nice gentle curve.) I then created the stellar background in PSP using the Space Bundle from Flamingpear. Glitereto, Solar Cell, and Lunarcell later to add the smaller planets. the whole thing is a montage which I glued together in Artgem. (Oh the asteroid serface was also a separate render in Bryce)
"

On Page 1. I had no idea what he's talking about. But I don't care. It looks cool.

I have not seen what you are refering to could you post a link? (I built that UI from scratch, sorry if it looks too similar to another UI, but that happens from time to time,.. great artists tend to think alike

I use a set of PSP Plugins called Glitteretto (starfields and nebulas), SolarCell(sun flares) and LunarCell (planets). You can find the plugins at http://www.flamingpear.com/

I'll see about making a pack of planet/starfield backgrounds.

Amazing Work David!

Thanks for contributing to the DBPro community.
I am more of a programmer than an artist, so all this is much appreciated!

I suspect your graphics here have spurred on new projects and ideas, and thats what we like to see happen, Thanks.

I would like to make a request for checkers and chess pieces, and a board prefably 32x32 maybe. Whatever size you think looks best

Chess and Checkers? 2D I hope, because I don't think I can do the chess pieces in 3D. What rez for the pieces? Remember letting me know info like size is important, or I might make the pieces 8x8 pixels. lol

Just a minor question, were you the guy who reminded Aaron to open a chat session? Just wondering.

Also, That would be hard. Chess peices in 2d..

Yes, I often ask/remind Aaron to drop by #spaceempires when we finish our beta chat sessions. Usually on saturdays. (I'm not sure if there will be a beta chat this saturday. So I can't promise I'll bump him into the public chat room, but feel free to hang in #spaceempires on every saturday around 3pm eastern time, that's around the time the beta chat ends.)

Probably too much info there, but I tend to digress. lol

Cheers!

I can make 2D chess pieces easy enough, I will post them tomorrow.

heh. I also noticed that all this graphics might be the product of you not needing to work on se5 right now? I might have a large request but I will show you that I have partial progress...
If you click "New Game", it will have a cruddy GUI... I was wondering if you could make a bar, or lower bar for it? It would be pwntastic. Sorry if this is a large request. So far I think someone should compile all the images and such to one post.

edit: also, if you want to check out ANYONES work, check Ibol's out.

thanks for the plug, undercover noob...
i was wondering how to introduce myself to the wonderfully talented
david gervais...or to just sit and be really jealous...

hi, david,
i came to the end of this post, started reading backwards,
looked at your website, and was really impressed,
and thought "holy cow, i gotta get some input from this guy!",
saw how sci-fi oriented your stuff was, (kindred spirit).
and then i finally got back to the post where you said you're
actually working on SEV
and i was mildly devastated (possible?).

i'm designing my own 4X game...in DBP, with good progress.
anyway, i don't know if it would be a conflict of interest for
you to work with me, or even so old hat by now as to be just UN-interesting,
but just maybe...

bob

ps:
when i saw you 2D rpg tiles, i wanted to immediately start a game with them...good stuff!

I was overly excited. I almost was pure happy. A guy on DBP forums, from SEV! Possible? Ask yourselves. If you read the irc logs, he hasnt much to do. He did art for SEV before coding began, and thats probably why he is here now. If anything, work on Ibols. I want to see Ibol's game up. Anyway, good luck Ibol.

Hi,

I just made a little demo of Megaton Cat's Happyland 3D graphic. You basically just walk around it. Not much to do yet.

Have fun.

LoL,.. awe, I was thinking that if I did a view from the bottom it would be alot easier,.. (they would all look the same and I could kill 2 birds with one stone.. use them as checkers pieces too.) lol

Just kidding, I allready have some 2d chess pieces I made way back when, but I'll brush off the dust and bring them up to date.

Cheers!

P.S. Rest assured I'll look at all your requests and get back to you. I downloaded the 2 recent demos and will post comments later.

P.P.S.. IBOL I did indeed allready see your thread and noticed the progress in recent days, (The new UI is nice) I'm not sure what you would want me to do, send an email to me at the contact address on my web page. Or just post here, people like to read dev discussions, at least I think they do

Ah, on my demo press + and - and you zoom in and out, plue 1 and 2 are for race switching, and then the sitrep doesnt change, but I am soon making an event storage array. So right now, I got the few basics set up, but I *am* working on this! (partially, I have another large php project to work on, + a large website I need to do (as in, work related)) I guess you could say I am a "Space Empires Fan Boy". When I played the demo of SF(star Fury), it was kinda boring, and I think I will stick to the SE series. On another note, I have rambled in your thread, sorry. But the beggining is good.

(EDIT) I have updated the download to include a chess board, and better textures. (EDIT)

Heres some 3d chess and checkers pieces I made. I was inspired after I saw David's 2d ones.

Grab them here or check the attached image for a screenshot!
http://www.silver-dawn.net/Adam/chesspieces.zip

Please note. I didn't make these textures specially for this, so the King checker pieces have a transparent decal sort of layer for the crown. This can be a good thing though, so that you can hide/show the crown limb, if you don't understand, you'll see when you load up the model. Also, the transparency image for the crown is a .png, and if you load it up in your paint program, most likely it will be all black, but it should retain its transparency data so long as you don't resave it. So just test it out in DB first before you email me asking why the image is all black.

...I just didn't feel like UV mapping them and creating a special texture for them tonight...

I was wondering if you could make some images of explosions and dust. They don't necessarily have to be animated, but that would be nice.

Thanks.

that explosion generator can be made easy in dbp, you just need to use particles, get the image of the explosion happening every half a second probly, then save it as esplosion_ + the next number.

I will make one myself

By "No Royalties required" he means it is royalty free. (As in free for both commercial and non-commercial use.) But in the readme he does ask that he be given a copy of the game, which is more than fair even if it's a free game.

All in all, it would make a good coding challenge, make an explosion generator.. hmmm?

Cheers!

I hope the next coding challenge is an explosion generator, I will go ahead and make my version and improve damn good.

Now on with business, David, could I make a second request? I would like 2d, 48x48 tetra vex tiles, I will put the numbers on, That would be good, and one square for the board would be great as well.

If you want I can make a form for making requests so you don't have to look through the entire forum. Only if you want it.

Also I was about to ask
Quote: "Are all your images royalty free?"
I guess that is answered now.

I looked through all the images you have produced, poker chips would go good with the cards, if I can get poker chips and tetra vex tiles then I will be able to remake the best of entertainment collection. I would do that after my mmofps. (Multi-Man Online First Person Shooter)

It has been great with all this art. Thank you David
