creating a model can take any amount of time, depending on the deadline, dedication and quality, low-poly modelling (game models) takes alot less time than high quality or photorealistic models.
i only use milkshape for the great exporting tools, it has so many (including .b3d, the main reason i have it) but i dont use it for modelling, it just doesnt feel the same as 3ds max. I also have Maya, its VERY well known and has some amazing features, including very easy and flexible shaders, including fur shaders that are very easy to create, it has alot of built in utilities that are just great, unfortunately, max has become too common to me, and im still learning Mayas GUI
animations can take alot of time, characters need bone rigging and you need to create envelopes for all the vertices, but once that it done, it is so much of a relief, the way you can just rotate the bone and watch the model interact without ripping, its easy to then create movements with the bones and set frames, but it can be hard when it comes to realistic animation.
texturing the model can take a while, depending on the quality and dependance of the texture to create most of the quality (e.g game models, where detail must be in the texture) it is sometime required that professional tools such as photoshop are used for the best efefcts and clean sharp textures.
ive never actually had anything to do with truespace, tell me how it works for you
