Thanks!

The gameplay is just to pick the winning dogs, and make money. There will be a second version that is used to predict real dog races by using a real dog database of times, and realistic physics, bumping into each other, how fast they trap. As realistic as possible to see if I can watch a race before it happens.

What I am doing in this game is texturing plains with the dogs. The game will look like it is using animated sceletons because I am having lots of angles for the dogs to rotate around, probably 2000 frames of animation. The Plains will also have box collision, so it will look very 3D. Anim8or might have 3DS animation export soon, because the developer is allowing user plugins in the next version.

Here is an update showing the new stripey borders, improved windows, and inner shadows of the stadium.

The game design looks awesome and keeps getting better! Side question, does a place like this really exist in the world?

Thanks! It's Perry Barr stadium UK, but I added a glass dome to it to make it look nicer. Here's a link to a video, but you need a Plugin to watch it.

This is looking great. Question - why not use 3D models for the dogs? It seems like it would be so much better.

DB Classic only allows limbed models, so the dogs would look like robot dogs. Plus, I would need to buy a modeller that exports limbed animations. DB Classic also does not have shaders. By using 2D renders I can have realistic dogs, and pre-shaders, and hardly any polygons, meaning more speed. In fact many games in DB Pro could be done better this way. You can have realistic flowing hair like Monsters Inc, and realistic flowing clothing better than Tekken. Plus millions of Polygons, it doesn't matter how many, you end up with just 2.

Yeah... For a moment I thought you had found a way to make dbc use them...

Meh, I'll probably super update blockverse anyways... I'm going to end up comming out with a new verion of it every quarter year at this rate.

Blockverse looks good anyway.

Now I am building a tractor. It is just for detail. All greyhound tracks have a tractor standing by. I haven't decided yet whether I am going to render it, or put the model in the stadium. It might be medium poly, maybe have the option for either. My computer is not slowing down yet, but I think that a low end computer will struggle with it.

Started again. This tractor has very realistic wheels, but higher poly. Tractor tyres are a real fun challenge to model. I treated them as a puzzle that I had to solve.

Thanks! I am making a different tractor body now. In fact I might make a few different tractors, and choose the best one. Sell the rest.

Mr Pinch, my arch nemesis. This has come a long way sinse your "why does my doggy run like a cripple" thread at TGPF (I took some artistic license there with the thread title). It's looking really funky, especially for DBC. Nice attention to detail and nice stadium. Good luck with getting it finished. Betting games like these can be pretty good fun, especially with a few friends and beers. Can we expect multiplayer on the same compo? It's always fun watching your mate bet all his money in an attempt to beat you in the last round, only to watch his dog hobble in last.

Remember, I'm watching you.

Thanks for the comments! I never thought of multiplayer, but I could do that. Here's how the tractor is coming along....

I managed to find the exact same tractor that I saw at the side of the race track. They level the track sand, and mow the grass.

The wheels took 3 attempts. It is a hard shape to model. They are facing the wrong way on my picture. They are fun to model though, because you have to plan it out before you do it.

Changed the tyres for flatter ones, and the correct rims for this model. Added some rounding to the body. Made a hollow area for the seat. The canopy will be a seperate model that fits on the top, and will probably have some sort of glass effect put inside it.

Well, the dogs are not ready to run around the track yet. I need to make a collision editor, that turns the flat plains into 3D box collision, and being as the dogs change shape so much, I need to make the boxes change to the correct sizes for every animation frame. This is a lot of work. The only demo I could supply is a fly around the level at the moment.

Yeah, that tractor is looking great so far, love the detail. Your finished model should look awsome.

Take your time doing everything so it's all good quality like the work you've done so far.

Really nice, good idea to take an actual google earth photo of the dog track.
BTW Could you please tell me where I can get the lens flare effect.

sweet. now all you need is a pistol in the lower right corner, and you have a first person shooter.

keep up the work

no offence, but what exactly do you do in this game?
do you train dogs, or just watch them run, or are you a dog? maybe you are the tractor? or the camera man? yay.

edit,
after some detailed reading, i noticed that you made this as a test.
what you're aiming for is quite interesting. good luck.

OK... It's back to the drawing board with the Greyhound. This greyhound looks much better. I have made the model easier to animate by sticking the tail out of the way. There are a lot of improved shape to this model. Better back legs, better nose, better eyes, better inner leg. I have to start the animation all over again, but this time I can remember what the dogs legs are supposed to do.

Looking cool Pincho, you've clearly been practising your game modelling .

I tend to avoid games like this, I always assume that I won't enjoy them, then I end up addicted. I had this multiplayer stock exchange simulator on the Atari, really the sort of thing that people should hate, but it was arguably more addictive than crack.

Thanks! Better than my first attempt at a greyhound, a couple of years ago. See Picture....

The game might be good with a few mates round, and play for real money. But mainly, it is just to see if I can make DB Classic look like DB Pro, and to see if dog races can be predicted from real physics. It would be nice if you could land on planets that have different sporting events running, like a gambling Elite.

Ohhhhh, you have to include a drink-game mode too, like the loser has to do a forfeit, I know a few people who'd be into that .

TBH I assumed this was in DBPro, certainly the best DBC screenies we've seen in a long time.

Now this looks good!

Pincho - you mentioned earlier about sprite collision. There is a plugin called eXtends which was released recently (and is already about to have a patch released) which can do pixel perfect sprite collision and once the patch is out, can handle pixel perfect collision for scaled and rotated sprites too.

That is good. I hope they can get DB Pro to work on more versions of Direct X as well, and Vista. Buying DB Pro now is like buying a time limited version that lasts until Vista is released.
