Hi, and welcome to the ComicSync Work-in-Progress thread .

Description
ComicSync is an application written in DarkBasic Pro that allows users to read digital comics on any color-screen iPod or other image-compatible portable device. It splits the original comic files into smaller images which iTunes can sync to an iPod video or iPod nano. Once on the iPod, these images can be scrolled through using the slideshow mode and allow comic text to be read easily.

Downloading the beta version - July 31, 2007
1. To install the beta of ComicSync, first download the installer:
Download ComicSync 0.6.0.0 Beta.
2. Save the installer to the folder you want to install ComicSync in, i.e. 'C:\Program FilesVaoWareComicSync'.
3. Run the installer and press 'Extract'. Make sure the install path is correct.
4. Run ComicSync.exe. It will extract necessary files and start up.

Running the demo
The Beta version includes task files for the first chapter of MegaTokyo (available for free at http://www.megatokyo.com/, written and illustrated by Fred Gallagher, originally along with Rodney Caston)
After installing ComicSync Beta 0.6.0.0, run ComicSync.exe and press on 'Add Taskā€¦', then choose the MegaTokyo folder and then Chapter 00.I.cst. Then press 'Process Tasks'. If you look in the iPod Photos folder (Default 'C:\Documents and Settings%USERNAME%My DocumentsMy MusiciTunesiPod Photos'), you should see a folder 'MegaTokyo Chapter 00.I'. Open it, and you will see the split images. You can then set iTunes to sync all photos in your iPod Photos folder to any photo-compatible iPod.

To-do list
- Make Help Files
- Finish making all options and menu items useable
- Make a page-viewer to allow reading the comics on the computer through ComicSync
- Shortcut on the programs menu
- Compress ComicSync into a single .exe file

Yes. iTunes can copy pictures to iPod's with color screens (iPod color, iPod video, and iPod nano). ComicSync divides comic images so that they can be copied to an iPod in a format that will allow the reader to still be able to read the text in the image.

Yes, iPod's are usually used for music, but you can also view pictures on any color iPod, or watch videos on a 5th generation iPod.

If iPod's were only for music, then Apple wouldn't have made one with the specific capability to watch videos. Some people would like to use their iPods for other media. ComicSync helps replace some functionality lacking in iTunes' photo-syncing capabilities.

And thanks for posting .

NeX,
Thanks. Yes... Apple get's away with a lot, since it was the first.

Roxas,
Very interesting.

I'm working on an update. It can now download online image collections without splitting the images, and hopefully I'll get somewhere on the image-viewer to preview the pages beforehand.

I've used an iPod before. Quite honestly the extra stuff is better for phones or computers.

Cheers,

Sam 93,
Quote: "can this work on any mp3 player? Dos it just cut up a picture?"

Basically, yes, it cuts up multiple pictures to your specifications (how many cuts per page, how far the screens should overlap in content, etc.).
It will work with any portable device that can view images - iPod's, color-screen MP3 players, etc. No idea if photos can be put on a DS... but you're welcome to try, Roxas .

If anyone has a specific screen resolution they'd like support for, I'll gladly put it in (I know, I need a way to type in custom values...)

Aaron,

I don't have a laptop , and my phone is worthless as anything more than a phone (it's screen is under 1.5 inches). I agree in general - but if Apple can add the feature, why not? My iPod plays videos better than my PC (blasted 2004 eMachine)

Wait, does it cut the comic on the pre-designated lines - for example, will it keep each comic frame whole, or does it crop them to fit the screen?
