After about three weeks since I first decided to embark on this project, I now have a functional work in progress, with the objective of wrapping all of the games together in a single program styled directly after the official DS game.

For those of you who've never played Brain Training before, the idea behind it is just that; by completing quick and simple logic exercises in a few minutes each day, you become "sharper", and such. A better explanation can be found here.

demo's can be found near the bottom of this post.

Last Update: 2nd August

- Not done; - Working on; - Done; - New idea

Features

Menu system created from scratch, mimicking a simplified
windows interface, with buttons, switches, text boxes and
text labels.

Extensive use of Cloggy's D3D Plugin for 2D effects.

Efficient filing system, allowing the program to handle
large amounts of data whilst only holding what's needed
in memory.

Up to six profiles. With each profile, three personal
bests are stored, along with the first score each day, for
up to 365 days, for each game.

Graph of past 365 scores appears when the game's
button is rolled-over in the daily training menu.

Freeplay mode, where you can practice unlocked
games indefinitely, without timing restrictions or goals,
to achieve better scores in your daily training.

Clocks, in both analogue and digital form.

Configure options for each profile.

Set a color scheme for each profile.

Games
Sums x 20 (0 Days)
Sums x 100 (0 Days)
Syllable Count (2 days)
Low To High (4 Days)
Sequences x 20 (7 days)
Sequences x 100 (8 days)
All remaining (to be added)

As with any WIP, more will be added as it comes. Meanwhile, feel free to take a look at the old thread in the code snippets board, with four games, click here. Thanks.

Hey this looks pretty cool. What other types of games do you plan on adding to it, besides the ones in your snippet post? My only crit is the purple bars, hurts my eyes for some reason. Custom interface options would be nice. A little more flash would make it stand out more as well. Maybe add some small color effects, or button animation of some kind to keep people interested longer. Though I assume your next mini-games will be more than just math problems

How are you going to calculate brain age? Speed v.s. score v.s. type of problems? Or do you have another method? Or do you not want to share? lol

Keep it up, looks good.

Thanks, Blastwave! I plan to add all (at least, I think it's all) of the daily training games, and most of the brain age tests (from the first official game). Also, taking into account your concern over the colours, I will add some scheme options so you can pick the most fitting one. Finally, I have no idea how I'm going to do it at the moment, but my shot-in-the-dark would be to get the base score from the results of the test, then compare it with past scores and the player's age. I'll see how that turns out and take it from there.

Update
Graph of past 365 scores appears when the game's
button is rolled-over in the daily training menu. Done
unless problems appear later.

Profile color schemes.

Minor update

You can now switch between the calendar and a clock.
Your choice is based on a menu button's switch state, and so is
reset when changing menus.

While this bug is nothing particularly serious, I've noticed that the
second profile's personal bests are the same as the hi-scores, and
include scores set by the other profile. I'll sort that out at a
later point.

I will upload a demo before long. Please feedback.

Update-o

Hi-Score "bug" fixed. It was still drawing the personal best scores
rather than the overall bests. My realisation was hindered because
the names were displayed right. In short, I suck.

New game added: Low to High. Nicely integrated, with
all little botches that I saw when introducing it fixed. I don't
think any new problems should pop up, but we'll see. You have to
have played for five days to unlock it. Screenshots below.

With the fixing of the hi-score problem, I'd say this thing is very nearly ready for a demo. A few more days at most. Please pester me for it; this thread is feeling somewhat lonely.

DEMO

The first demo is now available. Everything appears to be operating fine, so it should work. Remember to have the latest DirectX, etc.

The RAR includes the program and a readme. Please feedback!

Minor update

Identified and fixed a bug in Low to High that sometimes
allowed the player to click a wrong number but still carry on.

Update

New game added: Sequences x 20 and Sequences x 100.
Similar format to sums, but you must fill the blank in a sequence
of four numbers. Works fine.

In the official DS game, Dr. Kawashima appears every now
and then when you open your profile, giving you handy tips and
such. How about something similar? The first tip I thought of was
"a word a day", in which an unusual, or commonly misused or
misspelled word is presented to the player. What does everyone
think?

Well cool. Even feels like the DS version.

One thing to do though is to allow the Enter key on the numeric keypad as well as the return key. I would have totally ruled if that existed If you could do a draw the number mode (so like the DS) then that would be brilliant.

Heh, for a while there though I thought my well expensive (at the time) LCD screen was going wrong and showing dodgy interference. Nope, is some very subtle white and very very slightly not so white squares scrolling around in the background. Took me a little while to double check...

Cheers

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing

Heh. Thanks, Dazzag! I've changed a couple of lines so it can accept both keys ( returnkey() or keystate( 156 ) ), and that'll be usable in the next demo I release.

DEMO

The second demo is now available. As before, make sure you have the right DirectX and such. This demo includes all updates since the first, including the ones below.

http://www.speedyshare.com/556494195.html

Update

New game added: Syllable Count. You must read the
sentence that appears on the left of the screen and right down the
number of syllables. Note that many of these sentences are proverbs
found from the actual game, and have been copied, along with the
syllable count, from an online tutorial for the game, to save me a
lot of time. There are just under 200 that the program can
randomly select. Words such as "ear" are counted as 1 syllable
rather than 2. Make of that what you will.

No update here; just a request. A little rushed, yes, but if it gains any interest I'll follow up on it.

I was wondering if anyone could help me out with the audio. Does anyone have any recorded sounds from the real game, or the means to record them? Or even willing to help make new ones?
