--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi all!

I finally did it... SpaceBattle Shootout made the announcement board!
I never though that it should grow as much as it have done. I started the project with the idea of just creating a tiny game... Seems like it changed a bit!

So here I am... With the final version of SpaceBattle Shootout.

Downloads:

V1.1 is released. Please see the other downloads available.

The Full Version have it all, while the Training Level has been removed + some of the background textures have been reduced in quality in the Light Version.

It's up to you which version to go for!

SpaceBattle Shootout Full Version also uses LUA Script for the training level(Thanks to DavidT for making Unity!).
This means that you can mod it! Why I didn't use it for the whole game? Well... I was quite far into the game
before I got Unity. So I only implementet it for the training level. But it works great!

I'm very pleased to finally complete this game. I started working on it the 21-11-2005 18:28:18. And this day... 24-3-2006, the game is done and released

Features for the full version:

*2 enemies
*4 achievements
*5 weapon upgrades(One of the upgrades doesn't stand in the manual... I forgot to include it...
*11 different background! (Thanks to Scraggle for making those awsome backgrounds!)
*Highscore system, show off your awsome highscores!

*Screenshots:*

Here's a screenshot showing of the font!:

Thanks to Galekus for supporting this project from the very start. And for
providing it with media. Also thanks for the free hosting!

I hope you will enjoy it!

Comments and criticts would be much apriaciated

It's a good game. Theres only a couple things I'm not too keen on. Firstly, the startup screens are a bit annoying because they go on for too long and there is no way to skip them. Secondly, the turning is a bit fast for my liking. Other than that I like it, well done The Nerd!

Hmmm... I could fix this. What about if you couldn't skip it the first time you run the game, but after you've runned it one time, you can skip it?

Quote: "Secondly, the turning is a bit fast for my liking."

I could implement a little LUA script that controls the player turning speed That way the user could make it fit.

Thanks for those nice comments!

The things you've mentioned above will all be fixed for the next update! Thanks for telling me!

So right now the update would look like this:

Quite enjoyable

There are a few areas the I think benefit from a little tweaking.

1) When you destroy an enemy ship, it just disappears, an explosion animation would be better.

2) The display info is just plain text and would really benefit from a HUD. On some levels there is a bright star in the top left corner which makes the text disappear. If you didn't want to make a HUD, then at the very least a bitmap font would be better so that it wasn't just white.

If you need bitmap fonts I have made some available over in the 2D thread here and here and included code to load them in and display them (I think any of the three LED fonts would look good in your game).

3) I also agree that the intro is too long. It wouldn't be too bad if you could at least skip it.

Other than those three things it is quite a fun game ... good work.

Oh, did I mention ... those backgrounds look fantastic!

@Scraggle:

Quote: "1) When you destroy an enemy ship, it just disappears, an explosion animation would be better."

Yeah... I would really like that too. I've tried implementing it before, but it didn't go so well I bumped into some problems. Although I will try to implement it again

Yeah, I think that would look awsome too! I will diffinately try to study some of your codes and try to get a bitmap font implementet! With one of your fonts

Quote: "3) I also agree that the intro is too long. It wouldn't be too bad if you could at least skip it."

Yeah. As I stated this will be re-made in the next update. So after you have watched the intro once, you will be able to skip it.

Thanks for the comments and critics! All this really helps to make the next update alot better.

Much better!

Now you can skip the intro and the bitmap font makes a big difference

Could still do with an explosion animation when the enemies die though. Also some of the later enemies require more than one hit to destroy them but there is nothing to let you know when they have been hit. No sound, no graphical clue. Perhaps a metalic clang would help?

Entertaining though ... good work

Actually, I did program a sound that will play when you hit the enemy. But there is something wrong with it right now. I think I know the problem. Thanks for telling me!

Indeed, it is better now. The font looks nice, you've just gotta fix that small bug now. I agree with Scraggle about the lack of indication of if you have hit an enemy or not. Also, it would be nice if perhaps as you complete an army you regain a small amount of energy.

Yes. I've wrote that down

I have to agree too. Scraggle have givin me a wonderful sound that I will use.

Quote: "Also, it would be nice if perhaps as you complete an army you regain a small amount of energy."

Hmmm... I think it should be a little more well balanced then. I have giving it some though. What about everytime you complete like... 10 army's, you gain some health? Although I've been able to get to army 20 in the game as my best record

Thanks for the comments! This really helps me to improve the game.

Perhaps a difficult setting would be good then. On easier settings health would be gained more quickly.

Change pause so you can only use P to unpause. I ask this because I can't pause the game to switch screen as it becomes unpaused when I press a key to change window. While you're at it you could improve the pause text.

Also, I'm not too sure about the fact that it creates new icons and a new folder for every update, it gets a bit annoying having to manually delete the old ones. Besides, it's not really necessary having the version number in the name.

Anyway, keep up the good work.

Well... it's because I keep changing the main folder name. If I just kept it as "SpaceBattle Shootout" it would just overwrite I guess...

All available for the same price ... $0.00, so if you need some images/textures for a space game and you have $0.00 burning a hole in your pocket, check out the links and enjoy

There's lot's of things that you could do to update this ...
Special Weapons pickups. Homing missiles, smart bombs, etc ...
Boss's
Bonus pickups for extra speed or better standard weapons.
HUD
2 player co-op
2 player attack
Shields
Drones
Multiple bullets
Choice of player ships at the start of the game. Each ship is better in some areas than others (shields, engines, weapons etc...)

The list goes on ....

That is just some ideas, I am sure there are many ohters if you put your mind to it.

That's good ideas But the only problem is that I'm not gonna look at those kind of more or less big updates to the game. These updates just intend to fix bugs and maybe add small features requested by users. After this has been done, the game will be unsupported. Unless someone finds a huge critical bug

It was actually not planned for me to update the game at all after the first release. But bugs came up, and users gave me good ideas to small features I could implement. I felt like these features would be in the right place to get out. And right now I'm pretty happy with the result.

But thanks for the time Scraggle!

The game was realy good when I played it now.
Little changes and addons could make it even more better, just like Scraggle stated. Some AI and so on. Better game, more improvement suggestions your will more likely to get becouse everyone (including me) wants to see it again, and wants to play it more and get more challenge.

Yeah, It's good game, I got to the 12th level when first trying, how many levels are there?

Yeah... Addons could make it better indeed But I'm not really gonna update it anymore, other than bug fixes really. Although I did think of releasing a little background addon that would install more backgrounds to the game(Of course using Scraggles free backgrounds!). This would atleast add a little more variation to the game. I think I'm gonna make that addon pretty soon as it is quite easy and fast to make.

Thanks!

On the first try huh? That's pretty good! How many levels there are? Unlimited! There will just be an increase of enemies. And of course higher level will unlock different weapon upgrades. My favorit is the shield!

Thanks for the comment!

Right,

About the Background addon for the game. I don't think I will release it. Of course it could add some variation to the game, no doubt. The reason is actually the way the game is build. To install let's say 5 to 10 new backgrounds, you would not only need to download the new background, but also a new game exe. The reason for this is that the game needs values to choose between(The values are the count of backgrounds to chose between). And since I started this game before I got Unity, the value is hard-coded into the source. So a new change in the value, means a new exe. This new addon would have been much easier if the value was in a lua script But it isn't. So the question is:

Do you really wanna download a new exe + the backgrounds just to add some extra backgrounds?

Bug fix updates will still be made if needed.

Regards,

The Nerd
