Can this vertex (or indice) limit be raised?

Included demo that Green Gandalf put together.

Here's a description of the actual bug:

When attaching a shader to an object or limb, the limb appears to be transformed into a triangle-list mesh (if it isn't already). Under certain circumstances when using an index buffer, this can cause the number of vertices to be expanded above the 65536 limit and causes the program to crash with a windows message.
