Hi guys, another monitor thing, but just a few querys.

1. 1680x1050 vs 1920x1080?

2. HDMI Input vs Digital Input with HDCP?

3. HD or not?

4. Samsung vs Asus vs Hyundai? (mainly cause there good and cheap, Dell and LG are abit expensive for me atm)

And also, do you guys own a 22 inch monitor, cause this is not for me, i've got a 24 inch Dell but me and some friends are chipping in toward my friend new monitor cause his just died. He's looking for a 22 inch monitor but i've never had one so I wouldn't know if 1920x1080 is too big for a 22 inch or if it's worth having HD. Btw, he's only using this for gaming (might even want to connect his PS3 up to it also) and surfing the interwebs and are budget is £150-£200. Cheers for any help

Samsung. I personally love the T220. 1680x1050 will do, but if you want full HD vision, you might as well go for 1920x1080. It all comes down to preference, eh.

Benjamin, I can't believe I just missed what may or may have not made sense cause thats rare from you of my knowledge. I'm really wondering what you wrote now

tha_rami, true and that monitor is very pretty.

I was looking on (edit- )Overclockers to see what they had, theres some nice stuff up at the moment:

Asus VH226H 22" Widescreen True HD LCD
£157 for a HD 1920x1080 monitor is a bargin in my eyes.

Samsung SM2233BW Cream 22" Widescreen LCD
It's got good review on many sites. £165 , 1680x1050 rez

Samsung SM2333SW 23" Widescreen LCD
Same price as the last but this is 1920x1080 Full HD, though can't find many review on this.

Viewsonic VX2260wm 22" Widescreen True HD LCD
The spec stands out more than anything on this. £184 1920x1080 Full HD + 1x HDMI input

Hyundai N240Wd 24" Widescreen LCD
Just though i'd add this to the list cause a 24 inch full HD monitor for £195 is dirt cheap.

If he made the same mistake as me he misread his as he and then wondered why you were buying your dead friend a new monitor .

I have a 22'' WS at 1680x1050 - and really I'm not sure that a bigger resolution is necessary. If you have a good GFX card that can run at 1920x1080 then it might be a different matter, but 1680 is plenty for me.

I got a Fujitsu Siemens thing, but it has HDMI, DVI and VGA, you'll probably find it's not unusual to get them all. Really I think having HDMI and DVI are vital, esp if you want to use the PS3 on it.

Well being a tight fisted git, I'd go for this:

http://www.misco.co.uk/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=320061&CatId=3057

And spend the leftover cash on some new games. It's an Acer, but it seems like a pretty good deal for the spec. Only VGA, so it might not be ideal for consoles, but finding a fairly priced 24" with HDMI, DVI, and VGA - well cutting off those extra 2 inches could possibly save you half your money.

Well thats what we said, but for some reason he won't have it. It maybe cause me and the other guys all have 24 inch monitors. (me: Dell Ultrasharp 2408WFP, expensive I know but high quality and future proofed to the teeth). Actually thinking about it, we've all got the same monitor, no wonder he fells left out.

But HDMI is a must, since he's wants it for consoles aswell.

To replace my 19" Viewsonic with an LCD of equal resolution, I had to buy a 24", Better technology my arse! The 24" Westinghouse is nice for watching movies and it supports 1920x1200, but its sooo friggin big.

Here's the Westinghouse I bought from BestBuy for around $550 more than a year ago. It's only $200 now and I have to say that's awesome value for that kind of money and has a ton of video ports.

Tesco Direct are selling off a few large LCD monitors.

And no, Benjamin didn't write anything heartless, it was a comment about screen resolution.

Speaking of which...

Benjamin, when you do that on a LCD monitor, it looks terrible - really it's best to check displays to find a size and resolution that suits you, and your eyesight, not a good idea to run an LCD at less than it's specified resolution. It's not too bad when playing games, but Windows really looks ugly like that.

How dare you read the edit history.

That's a good point actually. When I first got this 19" LCD I used it in 1024x768 for a while (I was so used to 800x600 that it seemed pretty high res) and for some reason the picture quality was strange, then realised that the native resolution was 1240x1024, which I of course immediately switched to and noticed the quality I was expecting.

Speculation killed

BiggAdd, there selling that same samsung (T240) at overclocker.co.uk for nearly £60 less:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-086-SA&groupid=17&catid=510&subcat=

Does seem nice, but theres some review saying something about the colours looking dull and lifeless on some games (I think mainly WoW) but oddly enough it's always got a very high score, I even seen it in action with a PS3 and it looks amazing, one of the most shaperest monitor at this price range i've ever seen. I think this could be the one.

Also there are some great review for the BenQ V2400W £267.03 inc vat (though none on ebuyer) and it looks great, the only issue is you can't alter the stand and it has a low brightness (not really and issue):

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/144039

So which one... man this is difficult, though i'm pointing more towards the BenQ

One other thing, he's running on a 8800 GT atm, so he won't be able to run games at the monitor native res but i'm going to give him my Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 in the future (cause I going back to nVidia, mainly cause I like playing lots of older games and for some reason this card doesn't like them). 8800 GT's are great cards so I guess you could just run it at 1680x1050 and the games will still look great at that res, I think, I never tested it.

Man this is difficult, need your help guys.

While I was reviewing the BenQ V2400W (pic above), I found out that the BenQ G2400WD is internally identical to the BenQ V2400W, the only difference is the G2400WD has VESA mounting capability and less aesthetics, and finally the price, other than that they are identical.

At eBuyer.com btw:
BenQ V2400W - £267.03 inc vat
BenQ G2400WD - £219.78 inc vat, that 47.25 off.

Pic of the G2400WD:

So which one guys, really need your help on this cause I can't decide

Uh, do you need VESA mounting capability and aesthetics? Once you figure that out, the choice is pretty obvious.

Who cares about looks? Get the cheapest one!

If he's worried he can't get a date because of his monitor, he's got issues.
