These updates were just installed and they are indicating that md5.dll has a trojan. I doubt if this is true. In fact I'm pretty sure that it is a false reading and so I simply made this file an exception so that AVG will ignore it.

It's interesting that MD5.dll is always the trouble-maker for AV applications.

This is just to inform all those who might get this same warning.

Perhaps, although he is no doubt referring to the MD5 DLL for Dark Basic's compiler, so it is relevant to the product.

MD5.dll is required for DBPro 6 and up. It is in the compiler folder.

Edit:

thenerd, if you are bored as your sig says then maybe you can take the time to look in your compiler folder.

I should have mentioned the file in the subject title. Sorry. If a moderator wants to add it, feel free.

I know I just saw it.

I just wished I had included MD5.dll in the subject title. That might prevent others from creating another thread.

Yeah i just got this thing on my computer saying that md5.dll was a trojan and it broke my DB. but looking back though previous boards, there seems to be a few threads about MD5 being reported as a virus going back a few years so it's not a new thing but still worth the mention for anyone who doesn't know about it.

just exlude it from AVG put it on the Ingore list when AVG alert about it , however do not run AVG Automatic Scan cause it might do an Automated Action on it like quarntine or even delete.
i think you guys need to approach AVG website , or find somehow to put it on the ignore list as mentioned above.

Oh yea, thanks for posting this as i was just about to go bash on the 7.5 update thread instead.

I really really hate most anti-viruses...

---

Any idea how i can kind of make that file an exception for AVG because it thinks its a trojan every freaking time i compile. (i select Ignore every time but it doesn't seem to really work...)

Ok i found a way to fix it (worked for me at least).

-Open the AVG user interface

-Click Tools->Advanced Settings

-Click Resident Shield->Excluded Files

Then Add the program (or file, directory) you wish to be excluded from scans...

The exact opposite for me. I've been using it since it first appeared and never had a virus infection in all that time. Not bad and it beats many others which you have to pay for.

This is the first false positive I've had too, so can't really complain.

@Flatlander:

Altered the topic title for you as requested.

Thanks TDK.

This thread really isn't about which AV program is the best or the worst. Just FYI. I plan on reporting it to AVG. Of course, this is why they have an exceptions feature. It's just getting it in there before it causes some havoc.

Addendum:

They used to have an email address for suggestions regarding false positives. I cannot find it. So, I guess they have gotten so big (I started using there product before they even started selling it) but still have a small staff that they can't afford to be bothered. They were smart to allow the AVG free users to also make exceptions.

Those having problems, scroll up to the post that explains how to make this an exception.

TGC is probably the only one who could petition AVG regarding this issue.

Seems like more and more people are having this issue. I assumed so as this is a popular AV program. So, I hope you all don't mind a little bump.

Thank you Flatlander

I vote this is stickied until the problem is resolved.

And apparantly it's not just AVG, someone reported Zone Alarm doing the same thing.

And I vote for a sticky too. If I hadn`t read this then I wouldn`t have realised as i would not have been aware dbp needed this. As it happens I was taking a breather from my project, read this, then carried on with my project. 6 times of compiling and to my astonishment AVG threw this at me! Many thanks.

Md5.dll's name should be changed. MD5 is a known cryptographic hash function, so a lot of malware takes its name:

http://www.bullzip.com/md5/md5.htm

If it was renamed to something else, it would work better. I'm sure it won't take too long.

I had this problem, and fixing it was not much of a problem (I easily worked out what happened when I noticed my AVG virus vault containing files from the DB Pro folder).

The Rootkit/Trojan "Spyware Cease" is an example of malware that uses a md5.dll, but there are many others.
I don't want to have md5.dll as an exception, as if the real virus did implement, there would be no detection by the resident shield or the PUP.

Just a quick one. Has anyone had any problems compiling AFTER making the exception for MD5? Since i re-installed DBPro and made the exception in my antivirus my compiler won't actually compile properly, i have to press f5 like 8 times before it will actually run my program, am i the only person having this issue?

I think that's a problem with the editor myself, try using a different one?

I find the new default editor has 'moods'. Sometimes it likes you, sometimes it doesn't.

Where might i find a new editor? as my current one has now stopped compiling my code properly at all, i changed/deleted 3 lines of text and now when i try and compile it, it runs it still showing those 3 lines of code that i removed

I just tried Synergy, but i can't seem to get it to run anything at all

I reported this to AVG and just heard back from them. They will be fixing this in their next database update, so it should be corrected for AVG users soon.
