Anderson 2 (X-10 rip-off) Tech Demo

Developer: Ertlov

Hi guys,

I stumbled over the X10 Revival contest some days ago, and after a long time of the boards, I thought I´d throw something in. I´m pretty new to X10, as I bought it on release but had XP running untill last week. So don`t expect much.

Basically this tech try is a rushed "Let`s see what we can do with X10" rip-off of the Anderson Sequel we are working now. This will most likely be done NOT in FPSC, we are playing around with Cry 3 and Unreal 3 technology on A2. However, I tried to get the first part of the first level somehow recreated in X10, and here we go with this approach.

Attention - you need AT LEAST:

Phenom X4 / Core2Quad or better
3GB RAM
4870 Radeon or better (1GB VRAM recommended!)
Windows Vista or Win 7

I know, that with decent optimization the specs could be by far lower, but as already told, I´m totally NEW to X10 and this one was done within the last days in my very RARE spare time.

The Story:

It`s the year 2012. Economic crisis, riots, smaller wars in emerging countries, vulcano outbreaks, tsunamis and incredible acts of mass murder are dominating the news. Geologists have discovered an unusual behaviour of the continental shelf in the southeastern Pacific, leading to the slow but steady rise of an uncharted island.
Noone sees the connection between all of those events - except one NSA agent, Peter Albright. He is the grandson of the famous Wehrmacht staff seargant Stefan Albers, who stood up against Himmler and the secret society of the Black Sun, fought back Himmlers Shoggoth and escaped to the USA during the war.
With the stories from his grandfather in mind, Peter knows what happened in castle Landers, on the border between Austria and Bavaria.
He knows about the Great Old Ones.
He knows about Cthulhu.
And he knows about Robert D. Anderson.
With his top-clearance, he gets access to to files stating that Robert is still alive and kept as "special object of interest" in a top-notch and top-secret facility in Nevada.
Without official orders, but with some inofficial support from his superiour, Peter gets access to the subterran facility and is led to the Hydrostasis Cell were Robert has spent the last 70 years, been interrogated, tortured, misused for awful experiments. If he hadn`t been insane after the events of 1940, he would be it NOW. However - Robert D. Anderson, now over 100 years old, doesn`t seem to have aged in all those decades. His mind is clear, yet zynic, and he tells that there is nothing human beings could do to stop Cthulhu from leaving R`lyeigh after the island has completely emerged. Peter states that this might be true - but Robert is NOT a human being. Perhaps he could do something...
Despite of the things the goverment did to him, Robert agrees to help Peter, in order to pay back the debt he owed to his grandfather.

Suddenly their first meeting is interrupted, as the facility gets under attack from mysterious forces. While from the surface a huge horde of (obviously) gangsters fights its way down, a water breach has flooded the basement and some fleeing workersreport that the rotten flesh from the corpse chambers there has started to move.

Before Peter tries to get military support, he hands over a sixgun to Robert and tells him that he must stop the water rushing in from below, as the automatic contamination prevention will lock off their sector untill no more water is coming in from below.

Robert loads the weapon and starts into the second huge adventure of his live....

As already told: This is some private playing around with the X10 to learn a little bit about that. Don`t expect much!

Good to see you back here with a new game, Ertlov! You may not know; but there are some very specific rules, in order to post here. Please check out this thread, and amend your initial post.

So you are not really from Silent Hill in Dead Space? Damn, and I thought so, so far...

The game looks good, will download and test if it works, as many FPSC x10 games don't work on my computer.

I don't see how you made everything look that look, what shader are you using, your own? it looks great. I will be playing it on a

Phenom X4 965
6 GB ddr3 1600
Nvidia GeForce 480

I can't wait to try it out and see what you have done.

Unfortunately my PCs specs didn't allow me to play the game although I have Win 7 with Dx 10.

Underwater the framerate drops too low to do anything sensible.

Welcome back Ertlov, and what a great looking game you have!
I will be unable to test this game as I don't have a DX10 capable machine.
But of course, good luck and I have faith in your games.

Crap. How the heck i did missed that you are making some new part of Lovecraftian game!
Great looking. And for what i played the first anderson, the gameplay would be more awesome too.
Sad that i do not have vista or 7. You should make gameplay videos for us poor people.

Well, the story of Anderson was always thought to be a Trilogy with "Legacy of Cthulhu" as first part and introduction and leading over the next Rise of R`lyeh to a post-apocalyptic scenario.

Spoiler:

Right now we`re testing different engines for the 2nd Part, X10 is a little bit of playground for that. However, the GFX quality has improved dramatically from

to this:

or the one attached

Still I guess that Unity3D is the better choice in the "low cost engine" field, but who knows what comes out...

Yes, of course. No matter which engine we use - the B-movie styled Cutscenes will be back for good.

Ertlov, what shaders are you using? custom made or ones that is already in x10? I can't find any shader that made my games look this good!

I tweak sometimes values in the provided stock shaders, but most of the look comes out of the textures and especially the normal _N maps, as I create them with Crazybump and edit them afterwards in Gimp / PS for more accurate normal mapping effects.

Ah, yes, and the "light corona" effect you see on some of the pics is a simple decal, created out of the "supernova" plugin for Gimp. it only looks good from some of the possible angles, we already had that one in Anderson I.

Looking good! Glad to see work on the Legacy is still n the works. Even if it does go to another engine I'm glad your'e giving us a taste. I'm also glad to hear that you will be keeping live action cutscenes. Those were definitely part of the charm that made Anderson so unique. keep up the good work!

Still on work, now we have the final decision for the engine. It`s Unreal 3. As you were in the freelancers staff of first Anderson, do you want to participate in the sequel, too?
