June 3D Compo: "How did you BUILD IT?"

Inspired by Josh Mooney's WIP of his last compo entry we would like you to build a model and document your progress showing us the steps you took to get to your final render. This compo is all about the journey to the end result. It should be a good way to share your modeling skills and techniques with your fellow modelers.

This compo will run through to the end of July, giving you all plenty of time to get it done and still enjoy the summer in the process.

Cheers and have fun!

What will your judging criteria be based on? It would seem you'll be more focused on the journey and not the end result.

And my badge hasn't changed yet.

Badge has been changed, sorry for the slow response, was away or busy most of the day.

It would seen periodic screens of the work as it progresses would be easier, but We'll be glad to view any vids you want to make.

Show us how you made your model, that's what we want to see, the creative mind at work.

Cheers!

Yaaay!! This is the compo for me

What kind of wip progress is required/recommended, should it just be something like this, something more detailed.

OH great, Willow is entering, we all just lost.

Very nice sci-fi tunnel and you show very good model planning which is something that you don't see often. May I suggest using some grunge metal overlay texture on the diffuse?

I better step-up my game.

I'm not entering the competition or anything. I just saw the thread and thought I'd drop some useful information for you guys. Here are some good links from legends from ye olden days.

Bay Raitt and Martin Krol are names you should know!

Here are some old time-lapse modeling videos of mine for some additional reference. I was never as good as these guys though!

Useful principals these two guys use include "edge loops" when modeling organics:

Hayo might actually do something for this

Though will a sped up video suffice since its a mini project? Im about to start and i'd need quite alot of images to show the steps for a organic model so a video-ing it would be easier ;3

I'm making a lovely little creature i drew in my work journal

Its been compressed from 2:30hours @ 800X speed to 23mins ;D

Sorry this might turn overkill in terms of play length

Here's what I put together so far. I still have a ways to go with it, but it's shaping up better than I had hoped. I hope that it's ok that I went looking for reference images since my drawing skills have atrophied quite a bit.

-Allen

Since nobody's posted since I did, I'll just go ahead and update my image. Next up... alot of sculpting

Interesting idea David. I'll jump in on this one cause I just started designing a new PC case. It's just a case so don't expect anything as spectacular as everyone else.

That was cool to watch Laz, even if I did skip about 20 minutes of it!

Here's my current WIP of my PC case. Focus is on the case, not the motherboard inside, hence the cheezy simplicity of it. Click the image to see a slide show:

I'm not joining this one but this does seem pretty relevant in case anyone cares, I guess it's kind of tooting my own horn but hey, my horn is one that I will happily toot any time I get the chance
I just posted a tutorial series which covers how I made my entry to one of the previous competitions here more or less in entirety. It's all on youtube for anyone to watch. (Also made a thread about it but will post here too just because it seemed to fit with the theme of the thread)

1: Introduction & Building the base mesh in zbrush via zspheres
2: Sculpting the high res detail in zbrush
2,5: Making rocks in zbrush
3: Retopologizing the high res mesh in maya using the NEX plug-in
4: UV Mapping and final render in marmoset.

Here is my entry. It's not much as some will or have done. I made a hand that is still work in progress, but This is all I care to show on it until the model pack is done.

Little addition to this. I have added to the scuplt to get more out of the normal map and even wrote a shader for it.

Well i've completely changed my workflow for the better. Still getting used to the changes and trying to stay out of old habits but i'm more efficient/streamlined now. Tools in Max2012 are far better than there equivalents in 2010 so i can start using them fully without worrying about the bugs that rape your poly flow & count. Anyway 800x speed, new workflow is best at 1min when i start on the hind legs. Its pretty much the only time i get to use it since i dont really need to much more new mesh ;X

Anyway nearly done.

Mesh is now done ~

4164 tris, about 6 hours of work, an hes done ;3 Well done ish Uv mapping is a pain to do. Ill get on that next. The planes will be alpha'd fur, so not much to worry about with its messyness.

Looking really good people!

Dragoneagle has my <3

Phaelax's i thought was a picture on the usual browse down XD

Alucard's here just to rub in his work ;d

An Starmind pretty much writ' a mini tutorial on how to make good hands quickly & efficently.

///////////
Sober now, so i thought i'd try a highpoly sculpt of him.
//////////

Yes i despise Zbrush for its UI but the pay off it huge so im learning it.

Aha sorry for the late reply, yeah the teeth were a style choice since i found it pleasing for them to flow with the mesh.

This is realted to the compettion so i though i'd post it up. This is the first 4 hours of a portfolio piece im working on. Its at 900x speed. Im being as fickel with this as i can. If something irratates me i delete & redo it. Poly flow is near exceptional for me as there are 8 triangles out of 17,000 polies and ther placed on a area which keeps them clean and seperated from screwing with the smoothing. Im at 16 hours of work now but it takes a while to compress & upload the videos.

Cheers,
-laz

Working on it xP

If it will satisfy you, this is where 18/20 hours has gotten me;

At the very end after all the mesh is down, i'll be doing a final pass for the creases/cuts and little extras iv'e missed to save screwing with the poly flow. That and i'll scrutise the whole thing incase i've missed anything.

Heres the vid'

For your information, the entries for this contest are currently being judged, it just happens that the the judges (including myself) happen to be very busy with other 'work' atm. We will try to get the results in as soon as we can. I'm gonna try to squeeze in the time to set up another compo for next month.

So keep an eye out for the results and I hope to make the next compo a good one.

Cheers!

Sorry for the Delays, but here are the results..

3D Master: Starmind, Hand and Arm Model.
Notes: I think this one is an excellent example of low poly modeling and how to make it efficient and well built. Kudos for this Entry.

3D Best Model: Willow Space Catwalk.
Notes: I like how he turns simple shapes into a full section of a catwalk. great example of model assembly. Cheers!

3D Best Texture: Lazerus, Dragon model.
Notes: this one shows how a normal map and a program like ZBrush can make even a base model look awesome. Great Job!

Congratulations to the winners and keep an eye out for next month's compo, it's gonna be a good one!

Cheers!

Congrats, Willow. A well deserved result for a well laid-out project. Your techniques are solid, and we can certainly learn from your entry how to lay out our work effectively.

Congrats to Starmind and Lazerus as well.

Because many of us are currently busy, nobody seemed to set up a compo for this month, it was already well into august when I made the time to even get last months compo judged. At the same time I took the initiative to set up the next compo, but since more than half the month was gone we decided to make it for September. I will be in the newsletter, I think it's a theme that you can all have fun with. So, get ready to start modeling for the September compo, and in the mean time, relax, take a breather and recharge your batteries.

Cheers!
