Entry thread;

http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=83015&b=3
The winner of the last contest was BigAdd and he picked 'Game Character creation' as his topic, but the title is ambiguous, so here are the requirements;

Rules:

1. Post all references if there is 5 or below, if not pick the 5 most used referance images. 'This allows for people to just to understand the accuracy of the model'
2. Render in a game engine, or a model viewer that provides a viewing of the model rendered as it would be in a game (EG Deep Exploration) if you have none, download a demo of something, like Deep Exploration, or Torque or DBP or whatever.
'this is to test game use' This IS NOT A MANDITORY Requirement, it is completely optional

3. (I removed number 3, its basically number 2 in some ways)
4. No shaders are allowed. Just textures.
5. Poly count limit- 1500

The theme:
Quoted from BigAdd

Quote: "Ok the theme for the next Compo will be Favourite Game Character.

You can model anything from Lara croft to Master cheif. or you could bring any 2D Game hero into the 3D world.
"

And on that I propose my character, Pushover, who the hell is he? He is a little ant in an Amiga and DOS classic puzzle game known as Pushover, who's dog friend loosing his packets of Quavers down and ant hole and Pushover has to recover them follow levels of puzzles to solve to pass through the doors. Here is a reference picture.

I take it that normal maps count as textures?

OK, I've decided. I'm going to model Tifa as she appears in FFVII in game. Havn't decided on whether I'll do the map model or the battle model yet though. I think I'll just make it up as I go along.

Finding decent reference pics is a bitch though. Took me ages to find one. Google images was useless. Just loads of rubbish (and in places disturbing) fan art.

For rendering your model in a game engine, I made an extremely simple model viewer for you guys to use. Use left mouse button to rotate view, right to zoom, left and right to pan, spacebar to reset view, and enter to take a screenshot. Enjoy!

You cant use normal maps Medieaval coder. It will put people at disadvantage if they cant use them. Just plain textures will do.

@Joe, awesome thanks, I'll put that up for people who will need to show their models in it.

I might not do push over actually, it seemed like a good idea, but one skill I need to practice is texturing (as well as UVMapping) and he is too cartoony for a detailed texture, I'll think of another favourite.

I think the guy from Onimusha 3 fits my challenge.

Here's a wip of mine so far. Still have to do some more work on the head so it resembles Rayman's more, reduce the poly-count, and do some fixing up of the feet and arms, and then procede to texturing them.

With the newsletter came the announcement of the winche's exe shrinker, so to save those with slower conections time, I reduced the exe size of my ModelViewer to one that is significantly smaller. Enjoy!

Not saying I'm entering, but I was wondering if we could model someone with almost no detail. I want to make one of my favorite final fantasy characters, Sabin from FF6:

the guy on the center right, see, hardly any detail.

This the Sabin guy you're talking about?

That might help some others out.

I really can't think of which character to model. I think I will enter this one though.

Im not sure wat im gonna model, but i am definately going to enter. I think either Link, Samus, Mario, or a much more obscure character.

-EDIT-
Well not surprisingly i went with something obscure, this is Ferazel, from Ambrosia's amazing game, Ferazel's Wand.

My character so far. I'll rate my progress based on how well someone can guess who it is.

http://forum.thegamecreators.com/xt/xt_apollo_pic.php?i=928326

As followed by the rules, here's the concept image for those that want to cheat and not guess.

I was originally going to go for Cloud from FF7...but well...that's a little bit more then I could accomplish, so, I'm going to go with Dr. Robotnik, however the proper name for this version is "Eggman Nega"...

Nice stuff, Blazer Sabin will be fine, I tried making concept art to get a good FF6 model, didn't work out as my 2D digital art isn't good then tried to model it anyway, didn't work, so it would be nice to see someone do something I failed a while a go.

I would have more progress (and the threads sorted) but I've been having my hair dreaded over the weekend, yup I have dreads now man But tomorrow before Karate I'll sort out Oni guy's chin and try and sort as much out as possible (if my book hasn't arrived that it) and sort out the threads for the contests.

@Bahamut

It's Serge the protagonist of Chrono Cross. It was a game released for the PS1 around 2000 I believe. My character is 470 polygons, so I bet I'm really close to what the original Serge was in game. As for quality of the texture and overall geometry, we'll see once I'm finished.

MikeS, i would suggest you scale the short ends down abit to make it look less like a skirt unless you want him to be a CD

Edit: just to show I'm overly irritating sponge heres my wip http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j53/Durgis-Flak/pop.jpg

Thanks Chris.

When it's animated it will look a little better. The shorts are suppose to be baggy, so it'll look a little skirt like I suppose.

It's 938 polygons(Triangulated!) so it is very simple. I like the texture so far, just a few parts I need to touch up on. One poly is stretched a bit(can't be seen in screenshot), so that's the only thing I really need to fix. Taking a break for today, but might start some animations on the model since the UV map is finished.

Here is mine, might even be final if I can't see anything else to add, I still have to rig it though. I have no access to darkbasic so this is the model as seen from the Blender Game Engine, which would show the model the same as if it were in darkbasic. Oh yes and I just remembered the wand, thats definately necessary lol. I think he ported from 2d to 3d reasonably well, I wish I could play this again, but unfortunately its only for mac classic

Yes it is exactly the same, nothing but the UVmap is shown, there is no lighting in the scene. My windows computer doesn't really work so i wouldn't be able to use the renderer program anyway. Since im on a mac, im purely here for the 3d chat lol.

Nope, my references images are fine with the new update, just try opening the directory then clicking on the tick, or the other way round, it happened to me once before the update and thats it.

Nice stuff coming along here people.

Higgins, you weren't ignored, only I know the answer and this is my first access to the PC since my last post, apologies for not giving details, the only time I had PC time was when I started my WIP, I've been away from the PC mostly since it started. Hopefully everything will be sorted once you read this post. (although I was busy, I thought i'd let people get started rather than delaying the contest )

Hey Cian, I'd make his nose bigger and possibly emphasise his mouth more, and I'm sure the things on his head splitting won't hurt the count too much But it looks nice
