Is it my imagination or are the letters at a slight angle, and not all in a fixed X & Y positions ?

Yes, it is your imagnination!
Check them in a paint package and you will find that they are all straight (except for Gooey, of course!)

As for the fixed positions, they are all on a fixed Y axis and on a central point on the X axis for each column. If you trim the edges using the supplied function then it becomes irrelevant anyway because each charcter will have a different width.

At least they're all straight - so used to seeing fonts aligned to their top left corner of each letter
