My current city map Im using for game testing is getting a bit boring, so I thought I might take a stab at modelling a familiar map to anyone who plays halo 2 multiplayer; headlong. Its my favourite map from halo 2 and the geometry on it is actually really simple.

So far Ive got the exterior of one of the buildings finished, its at 240 polygons so far:

Its turning out to be really simple, I just throw in halo 2 in my xbox and since my computer is in my living room with the tv, I can basically walk around the entire map in halo to look at the geometry, and then model it out in wings.

<edit>

Oh yeah, I was thinking of putting my own twist on the map as well. Headlong in Halo 2 is basically a city under construction, for those that havent seen it. I might model this to be the city completed, with the gates open and the roads all in place, we'll see.

Heres a picture of headlong from halo 2 as well:

Hey Ruc remember me?
Just wondering what modeling program are you using (please don't say 3DS Max)? Looks good so far. I'm also in the process of modeling a very large level. It can be a daunting task.

I use Wings 3D, heres a pic of my old cityscape (Ive added a lot to it since then though),

Ive done 3-4 large scale maps so far though, Ive gotta say this ones the easiest, maybe because its already modelled and all I have to do is look at the geometry and move/extrude verts to match .

<edit>

Thats rendered using max though, I know, a teenager has a 3000 dollar modelling program? No, my 3D arts and drafting class has the student version.

Wow that's pretty good! That's what I'm working on right now too, a cityscape. Keep up the good work.

I finished modelling the first building, here's a youtube video of the interior/exterior. I cant believe I managed to do the entire thing in 1 mesh, and keep it to scale at the same time. The polycount is in the video (i forget what it was) but its pretty good, less than 1000.

That's very impressive to get it all in one mesh. Especially since wings3D doesn't have any boolean or glue tools.

A book? I hate book. Book is stupid.

I think Wings is somewhat of an underestimated program.

NICE models.

I played Halo 2 once at friends house and only once yet I still recognise your model from it. You've obviously done a great job.

Looks great! Now all it needs is a shotgun sitting there.

I call lockout!
