[yelling forcefully at you]

FORGED FROM A SEVERED DEMON'S CLAW THAT WAS CLEANLY KICKED OFF BY CHUCK NORRIS, THE POSSESSED DEMON SCEPTRE GIVES THE POWER OF BLACK MAGIC TO ALL WHO HOLD IT

Features:
*the claw is animated - it will lovingly fondle the orb during the idle and fireloop animations!

*uses the same shader as my Wizard Staff for animated glow and normal/specular effects - tweaked slightly for this weapon

*includes weapon pickup and magic jar for magic replenishment

Some pics, check out the great lighting variations!

Bond1 You're the greatest. It's as simple as that.

Edit:
Is this going to be available in the store or are you going to be cooler than usual and give it to us for free. (Just kidding you deserve money for it)
How much do you intend on selling this for? I'm thinking about devoting my time to a magic-type game and this would be perfect as well as the blue staff you made not too long ago.

I love it. For some reason my eye is drawn to the transition between the staff and the claw. It just looks.... unfinished. Perhaps a leather binding there would ease it. Not sure, maybe it's just me.

Excellent work and as always, you continue to expand the game possibilities.

EDIT: Is this the same hand you used in other weapons and will there be a list or way to tell which will have the same hands?

Best.

Wowza! It isn't really a demon style to my eye though, I think it should be more dark and evil looking.

Hey, it's a freakin' severed demon claw shoved onto the end of a brass and marble staff - what could be more "demon" than that? Lol.

Xplosys - I know exactly what you mean and I agree - but at this stage I don't really want to go back and add more geometry which would mean rebaking the normal map and redoing all the textures.

But wait till you see the video of this puppy - the way claw fondles the orb is pretty creepy! I'll post it when I get off work.

Oooh, you've just given me a great idea for a character...although the picture is cartoonish, the concept is fantastic.

And by the way, did you guys notice how cool the spiral brass section looks, and how realistically it reacts to lighting? That was done purely with a normal map, the geometry is just a simple 6-sided cylinder.

In fact, the weapon shader is in such stark contrast to the rest of the scene, I could almost see where I could be accused of photoshopping the weapon into those pics...I gotta get to work on a segment shader!

Well i see i bit to it too, it looks clean....a little too clean maybe add some more detail to the severed part of the claw? i mean the dude that cut the freaking things hand off must have had a nice sword to make such a clean cut.

Other then that...Amazing!

Yeah as I mentioned a bit above, I'm not exactly thrilled with that claw to staff transition. It looked good on the black and white concept I was working from, as well as the untextured high poly model. But it looks a little strange fully textured.

So I changed the story of the origin of the staff, see first post.

Here's a nice medium res video clip of the weapon, 7MB download: http://www.hyrumark.com/demonsceptre.zip That claw will give you the heebie-jeebies!

I'll try and post a high-def version later so you can see all the normal mapping detail in full glory.

Dam you and you mad skillz that killz! lol awsome work as usual!! Amazing normal map on that cylinder! i double taked when you told us it was a regular 6 sided cylinder!

my one criticism would be the sound that the staff makes when it attacks, it sounds a bit odd and i think it doesnt fit in with the darkness of the weapon (it being a demon claw and all). None the less astonishing!

You should do one without the ball and have the hand move, and maybe it splurt out so icky gooey stuff.lol Joking.
Nice work. I like the whole concept of the idea, but the hand looks more like it was glued on, maybe have some of the skin overlapping the stick or have it a bit more gory.

I missed the cutoff for the store today, but it should be there in the morning.

Thanks guys, and I'll try and tweak the sound a bit, but keep in mind I'm not a great sound engineer, I can record stuff, but I figure if someone really hates the sound they'll replace it with their own anyway.

It's very impressive that you have created a amazing shader with only 3 textures. Its like the one that Prey got , nice one

The staff looks ace , I only miss an eye on the staff that keep watching you.

Best.

Very much like Raistlin Majier's staff from the Dragonlance novels. Staff of Magus. Very nicely done.

Thanks, it has been uploaded to the store.

One thing you should notice if you take a look at the textures, is that I made the claw texture different hues in the diffuse and specular textures. This will vary the color sligthly depending on the light angle, and really makes it look like organic skin.

You can really notice this in the high definition video, watch the skin as I move around, I almost get this nice subsurface scattering effect. Sorry if it seems like I'm carrying on, I'm just in awe of what I can do with shader programming- it's liberating for an artist to have this much control over how your art looks!
