Dammm I think this might turn into a 3D game on a 2D view - who knows. its easier to rotate a 3D car on the Y to look and feel like going from <<< to >>> and vica versa.... Who knows

Would this be acceptable to you Fubarpk with it been a 2D game through out

Sure just if the original was 2D and your version is 3D it would be marked accordingly
It doesnt matter so much about title screens

Careful on the gloss I know it's easy to switch to the fun stuff but I'm determined to get the main gameplay working before any title screens or fluff get a look in.

bless ya - i was just suggesting... can easily rotate a 3D car rather than drawing individual rotating sprite images - especially with the time we have upon us

You keep cracking on, im sure you will produce something magical like you all do.

Oh, I see. You were making sprites from 3D objects?
I've done that before and it can work pretty well.

I'm not too familiar with the original game, so I'll have a look at it now.

I've been out for a meal tonight, so I'm just doing a bit of sprite work tonight ready for the next bit of fun, which will be the barrels and gorilla stuff.

I've got the running around and up/down ladder bit done which was fun. There was a lot more to it than meets the eye!
Still got the sub-pixel check problem which I might put into a little test at some point for someone to see what's wrong with it, but I'm pretty sure the GetSpriteHitGroup() function doesn't obey the sub-pixel check functions as expected.

Why not just rip the sprites?
There is no judging criteria based on the graphics.
In fact ripping the sprites would make your game more like the origional

Cant have that as that is something frowned upon and not something welcome on the forums

snippet from the forums rules and guidelines
Quote: "Do not upload or advertise illegal content, in any way, shape or form. To do so; puts yourself at risk of moderation."

and
Quote: "Do not upload, or link to work (other than linking to inform others) that is not your own. Permission must be asked for, and received for any derivative work to be posted (ie., re-textures, added scripts, etc.)"

I understand that the copyrights may nolonger exist but ide prefer people use their own graphics and one of the reasons I wont be judging on graphics it keeps
lawsuits away from TGC that way because games even like pacman still have some copyrights

I have been informed to do this takes quite a bit of work so one of the other mods has kindly said they will create generic competition badges. I can use these
for the contest results and any future competitions

@GraPhIX AppGameKit can really be fun and if classics is what you seek https://forum.thegamecreators.com/thread/223516 is a thread I started hoping to inspire
the reliving of classics and below a couple of them I have full source code for ones I have brought to life

Quote: "@fubarpk Sorry for the delay but I've just come across this thread. I'll donate a prize of in appreciation of everyone whose bought my AppGameKit books. "

Thanks that's really not necessary and normally we don't talk about money amounts on a thread and prefer to leave that to private Ims, but with that said once the competition results
are up there is no reason why you cant dedicate them a prize yourself.

I removed the amount you mentioned Alistar as that's nots something talked about on threads

I'm using ripped sprites. Some of them are so simple, even if you did your own it would be the same.
I'll have an alternative version for upload here though if it's going to be an issue

I don't think there's an issue with ripped sprites unless your going to publish. But if that's the rulz then that's the rulz.

I got into trouble myself along time ago for something very similar I posted and I received a ban
back then which I didn't think was fair at the time. So I wouldn't like that to happen to any of you
folk. Personally i love the idea of ripped sprites and even if i was to allow, another mod might not
approve. So best to stick with you own graphics even blocks i will accept as sprites and not judge
against you for not having pretty graphics i was more concerned in game play that resembled the
original.
"

Feel a bit like a nazi to have to say so but i do think its best not to use any ripped graphics.;

Good news
We may have another late entry aswell

PS:Looks like this may be a success good luck with your codes and remember its the code thats really
getting judged and skills required to replicate

Thanks for that - all my work is 99% no media, unless we have OBJ files - of which would be built within AppGameKit and then exported out to OBJ if and where necessary.

They did make some great artwork though..but thats someones elses hard work....of which they would have spent days creating and we maybe take seconds to use.

Is that fair?

Hello,
I thinking to participate with a little game from my childhood called ROBBO https://youtu.be/btRek7UytUQ on Atari (1989).
Because of the time remaining, I think it's a possible option because I see that I can found spites sheets and sound on internet, but is it allowed to use it for this jam ?
English isn't my first language so I'm not sure to understand every rules. What is a "ripped sprite" ? The media have to be created alone or created by the application ?

Thank you,
Riusz

@Riusz judging is on the code and the way it plays happy to have you aboard

Ripped Sprites= graphics taken from games without permission ( a big nono)

Using blocks is accepted as graphics for this comp

Hi there,
I don't post here very often but i'm always lurking and this contest idea has caught my imagination, so for the last couple of days I've been tinkering with making a version of a favourite of mine tapper
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tapper_(video_game)
I think I've got to a point where I could have something to show for it by Monday as long as I get some quality time in front of my PC over the weekend.

hope that's ok

I have done a game also nearly 20 years ago, would be time, to remake it with AppGameKit

Xaby,

I've always wonder3d how hard it would be to do a fighting game.....it's about the only basic style I've never tried. I always imagined collision detection would always be a pain!

That would be great but has to be some game that was classic of some kind where I can atleast see a video of the original for judging purposes
If its a game that' no one has ever heard of it makes it hard to judge in a classic remake gamejam. Was also one of the reasons I originally
wanted people to nominate their games early.

Quote: "I've always wondered how hard it would be to do a fighting game"

Think swashbuckler would have to be one of the first and should be easy enough to do simple key/animates like lunge/thrust/defend
and each opponent had its own difficulties an Apple 2 classic. Could possibly use pixel color detection like the older games used but with sprites
you can still get the collisions working if you update the collision shape

PS:If your going to enter really only have one weekend left

A look under the hood.
Top left is the palette for the level
The white square will be rendered to a sprite and scale up to 1024x768 to give it a low rez feel. This will be every frame so i hope that's not too much work

Hey guys,
just a quick note to say I'm still plugging away at tapper and will have something by tonight anyway (might take the extra time to add some shine.)
What has struck me though that these games (mine certainly) were originally written with huge limitations and tiny hardware specs. When I look at tapper, everything is animated and there is a couple of frames for every action but it looks great. What they managed in 32kb (!) has taken me just under 1000 lines of code and 27 images to explain. These old games are almost as much about engineering every last drop of capability out of the hardware as they are about gameplay and that's just amazing!

anyway, back to the code!

Thanks PSY it looks like we may only have 3 entries including yours, so if you find you still cant make it just let me know

Originally when I planned this I expected much older 2D entries but two of the entries so far have gone for harder 3D ones to recreate
The original thought was if people had stuck with the much older classics a weekend should've been enough to code something up.
