IMO your making it up as you go along...

...so what?

Well modelers tend not to do that - they use concept sketches and photographs on pretty much all organic models, it's the only way to work. Even the best character modeler couldn't make a character from scratch with no concept references. I think you'd be better off practicing from concepts, it's actually more fun to try and recreate something - because it's a great feeling of achievement and a good challenge to get it looking cool.

There's so many factors with character modeling to consider on top of just modeling - animation is a major concern because the areas around joints often need very special care otherwise limbs bend like cardboard tubes. Practice makes perfect, just keep at it.

how are you modeling this? not to sound mean, but i don't see any real techniqe of modeling this creature. Also, smoothing isn't the answer...just increasing the poly count won't make a good model, you must first get a good foundation, finish the entire creature model with roughly 2k polys, then slowly add detail. If you try to model using 400k+ polys, not only will it be near impossible to edit, but it'll get sloppy.

Not trying to be mean, just giving suggestions. I think you should startover, and go simple, then slowly build in detail...trust me, you will be able to create not only a good looking model, but a highly detailed one.

can i see the lowpoly version? you must have some weird faces to get that effect after smoothing.

Normals seem a bit off, that's easily done - you should look into smoothing the polygons normals.

The only bits that appear wasteful to me are the wings and the outer side of the feet.

its trogdor!!! ahhh

but seriously dude, get some more practice before posting stuff.

You can make a cube and smooth it until its a sphere, but it won't look any better without a good base model.
