This is the head for the character I have been working on recently. All critique welcome, and I might reveal something mildly interesting about the model! My only hope is that the images load... Bear in mind that it is intended for in game use and currently has 418 quads - awaiting triangulation.

very nice I'm guessing that the black line down the middle of the face is a result of the virtual mirror?

seriously though, thats some really neat modelling, how good are you at texturing?

Looks good, but looks like the eyes and mouth may be too high-poly (if your going to use it in realtime that is).

Great model though, I can't model people all that well

@el zlicho: Good guess, oh great, HONEST man who has EXCELLENT taste in head models Texturing? What is this art of which you speak? In other words, the best I currently have is ms paint and have never gone beyond the producural shaders in carrara 5. Gamespace - used for the head- has pitiful prodecurals(how is it spelt?). WOuld you recomend THE GIMP for a cheapskate such as myself? After software there comes the process of tutorials and loads of rubbish textures before my head here gets some colour.
@tyrano man: Your probably right... I mentioned somewhere else that I'm not particularly efficient at cutting back on the polys. I'll see if, combined with the body, it excedes my limit of 2.5k tris. Is 800 tris a good number for the average medium poly head?

Depends If it is a Main Char, and also it depends how detailed the body is. Is this the head for the guy with a cloak? If so then your probably going a little too high, but it's up to you and your engine

Get Gimp it is great It's spelt procedual.

That's pretty good, nice job on the geometry *pat on the back* the edge loops is what people often forget when modelling, but you got it right. But there are too many unoptimised polies, I'd remove them, no point having unnecessary polies on a low poly model (or any model for that matter)Also, although the geometry is pretty good, I'll probably play about with the cheeks a bit. You can find an excellent speed modelling tutorial on head over at Kurv studios, under the free lightwave ones, the technique they use is pretty good and the geometry should be extremely helpful.

Gimp it is! Eventually! It certainly is the main character, and yeah - tis for the (trench)cloak(coat) guy!! A little too high? Thats reassuringly laid back and so I shall wait and see how the body turns out! I shall post it here soon hopefully...

And the mildly interesting thing is: its modelled on me!
Cheeks you say? Could you elaborate on there flaws perhaps? Also, I would be keen to of learn where there seems to be unoptimised polys, makes no sense in wastin' 'em!

If I could model heads, I would be set for character creating on a huge scale. How did you model this, did you use references on image planes?

I certainly did!
So, the one question on everybody's mind is blatantly, "What next?" Next, my curious forum-goers is the hair! Once again, it will be modelled upon my own rustic locks, with some influence from the final fantasy protagonists. It doesnt matter who, they are all pretty darn similar in terms of shape and style.

Vaan looks too feminine. I will not have my face made to look feminine I'll probably go for cloud, but it wont be noticable, just certain features will be made to look slightly more 'perfect' inline with such final fantasy characters. If youre refering to hair, then its a definate no again - I have specific plans for the hair - an almagamation of my hair, thingys hair from devil may cry and aspects from cloud amongst other final fantasy blokes.
I want more feedback meanwhile!
- What is your general impression of the face?
- What age do you think the character is who will bear this head (based on the head)?
- Are there any features that look wrong or could be improved?
- Are there any areas that can sacrifice a few polys without sacrificing the edge loops?

-It's a nice face, seems like someone can't get enough of hearing that it does look quite final fantasy-esque, though ff faces tend to have pointy chins, and perfectly curved profiles.

-hmm, well younger faces tend to be more squished, and this one is quite thin. also, baldness makes anyone look older. the brow looks quite defined too. I'd say about, 18 - 20 years old.. probably younger than 20 though, it's very hard to tell these things though.

-If it's based on your face then you would have to post a screen for us to judge, but no, i can imagine someone looks like that in real life. in fact i had a friend a long time ago called david who looked a lot like that.

-well, when you get rid of the mirror you will be able to wipe out virtually all of the vertices down the middle, you could probably manage with less rings around the eyes.

mush now, get modelling.

Thanks you el zlicho. Those final fantasy guys certainly do have pointy chins, I'd say unaturally so. Well I do like positive feedback yes Working on the baldness soon, but squishiness will stay as it is I think. I suppose the rings around the eyes are a little plentiful, but I shall see whether I can get a way with losing any. Thanks again

Oh yer cloud looks cool, but don't make him ginger like cloud. I think blode better suits FF chars. You could go for a zidane look though.

Cloud is a dude. Ginger you say? Someone wasn't paying attention during advent children(great film!) I dont think square would dare have a ginger main character, its hardly the most popular or common colour in the world Besides, my hair is brown, and I feel that brown hair suits the personality of my character, so brown he shall have.

Vaan isn't actually feminine in personality, quite the oposite. He just looks a bit strange.

Tidus is the girliest of the lot. (from FFX).

Anyway this is like completely off-topic, lets stop talking about FF (even though it's so great).
