This is really a general question mate.
I realize you are using max so we will leave this one here for now.
please direct any future content thats general to the geek culture area.
I run maya on a PPC using a 19inch CRT and a 17 inch LCD.
The reason why i have both is I also do print / web and video, and require both for these elements.
To future proof your purchases, save desk real estate and to probably save a bit of money, conisider a larger one for your modelling and a smaller one for tools.
In all fairness though this is really a financial question only you can ask yourself.
If we all had the cash we would have 3 x 30 inch wide screens attached

22' wide LCD's are cheap at the moment.

I'm getting two of those at work in the next couple of weeks. I'll tell you how they fare when they arrive.

For your detail work you can't really beat a good TFT display, being able to distinguish pixel wide lines and stuff is easier on TFT. But it's a good idea to have a second display, so maybe just grab a cheap CRT monitor for that - better for seeing how your texturing is going etc. I use Rhino3D, and that's quite appaling for multiple displays, but it was still pretty good for having a 3D preview on the CRT and all the editing windows on the TFT, nice way to work.

The bigger the better really. I remember the days when I modelled on a 15" CRT that was blurrier than the 15 pint mark on a Saturday night.

I don't have a sig, live with it.

Yep, we have a now extremely blurry CRT downstairs for the old computer, so bad for the eyes. With my new LCD I rarely get sore eyes even after very long periods of time on the computer.

I use a 19" crt. And until I can find an LCD under $1000 that can provide the same quality as a CRT I won't be switching anytime soon. (that means the picture colors wont change when i tilt the monitor up)

What you really wanna get is one of those monitors the radiologits use to view the dicom images. Sweeeeet.
