Ok, here's the deal. Getting to a point where we have almost enough to package for a demo. Going over things, S4 has suggested our last hud was a little much. He liked the art, but thought it may be a little distracting being so bold. He suggested something a little more Fear styled.
(This is the hud from F.E.A.R)

So this is what I've come up with.
(My Hud)

Please be brutally honest. S4 isn't around due to his job to confirm with, and I need to hear what you don't like about this much more then what you do like(if anything). My thoughts are it's unobtrusive in the lower corner much like the fear. I seem to see it fine, but maybe it should have less saturated colors and be brighter like the fear? Not sure....Thats why I'm asking here. I figure opening doors and picking up ammo and all that other good stuff I'd have flash an icon of say a door in the lower right corner.

What would you change and why?

EDIT: Should have explained layout as well.
Top level:Logo/Player icon, number of lives player has/Ammo icon, ammount of ammo/Player selected weapon(Berletta92 shown, yet need to make all the M6 icons once I decide on a design). Bottom level: Health icon, health bar(no numeric increments for this)

There now we can talk the same language when ya tell me what you don't like

sorry about that lol .ok i think it needs more color around the numbers in the hud like if the numbers are green give it a slight green transparent glow around it.the little top piece of the hud looks to be to far from the hud i would move it closer so its not so far away.the cross looks to big to and needs to be smaller .can we get a few more screen shots of it with different back grounds to get a better look at it.

I like both the top one and bottom. I think the bottom one is a little hard to see though. I'm looking at with a LCD monitor instead of a CRT, I don't know if that would mane any difference. My favorite is the top one. I really like the colors and lay out. I don't think it would be too problematic while playing a game. Good luck...

lol....the top hud is Fears....I need to know what you don't like about the bottom, not that it should be burnt...lol. Kinda need to know why.
I figured people would recognize the fact FPSC wouldn't have item huds or be able to tell the ammount of ammo in a non selected gun. My bad. Certainly didn't mean to infer that top one was my work. It was used as comparison.

Visual note on bottom is noted. Gotta remember its not full size either but I'll look into making things contrast more.

EDIT: Old script from v1 runs the heads that come with FPSC. I addapted it to change huds to make a health bar. I've documented it before where to get these(as others asked on last hud). I know it's searchable because I found it that way.

Ha, ha, at first, I also thought the top one was from FPSC until I looked again. The numbers would look good in the neon colour I think.

Does the hud look the same under all types of lighting or can you see it better in a brighter area?
It's a little hard to see because it tends to blend into the background.
Looking at it in the pic is one thing but trying to see it when you are trying to dispatch people who are unhappy with the fact you are still breathing is another.
I think the design is cool.I don't know if it need to be brighter or a different shade or what.
Not trying to be picky but you asked...

The transparancy is cool but makes it hard to read. The icons/values are too close together and too hard to read. I would rather have a solid background with brighter values.

Best.

I'm sorry, my answers are limited. You must ask the right question.

OK theres one a bit brighter. Also showing how door and Key icons would show up.
Edit It's a little brighter now X dose that help? Space on end of gun is for longer weapons....should the hud be longer? Don't want stuff so small you can't tell what it is, so I don't think making icons smaller is the answer. Worried about hud getting to big too and overbearing.

I think if you loose the game icon (left, or move it above maybe?) you could space out the groups (lives/value ---- Ammo/value ---- Weapon) without making it any longer. Brightness/readabiliy is good but too crowded.

That's an initial observation. Once you got used to it you would know where to look for what. The icons will become useless and you will quickly look at the numbers only and know what they mean, so it's purely a matter of asthetics initially.

Best.

I'm sorry, my answers are limited. You must ask the right question.

I liked your updated HUD better than the earlier one (and even better than the one from FEAR!)

Very nicely done. I like the minimal use of colors. Colors make the HUD stand out too much in contrasting environments. This one looks just fine.

Only thing I would suggest is make it a little small.
Its too big! This is only a 640*480 screenie and I can read the numbers from a 4 feet distance.
I am sure you can keep the HUD the same size (what I can see with a 640*480 screenie) for a 1200*800 resolution instead.
That way it can be readable.
Same goes for your door/key images. You can easily have this size on a 1200 resolution instead of a 600 one.

i still think you need to move that top bar on the hud down it looks to far away .and the cross needs to be smaller the top of it sticks out in to the middle piece of the hud looks out of place to me .or make the health bar bigger to fit the cross.

OK new update.
*Lost game Icon
*Spread out groups
*Made 80% of it's original size
*closed in top line a bit(didn't like the looks same as bottom so comprimized)
*Useable Items will now go across bottom like binoculars, flash lights, maps, etc.
*'Action' items viewable on sides, will be resized to more closely match the 'useable' items along the bottom. Still need to make a general "use" icon for like switches or starting machines for which I'll probably make an icon out of the universally understood image of a palm of a hand(but no time right now)

Much much better loc; I like the last one the best; I always thought that FEAR's was over the top anyway; I prefer everything in one place.

Looks great dude

what youve got looks nice but kinda looks like a quick layer style job, perhaps instead of bevel you could keep it all flat and go for a solid colour approach or simple pattern as seen in the F.E.A.R hud.

Also, perhaps the outer glow on those objects is a bit over done, looking at the F.E.A.R hud you can see the glowing icons appear to be a bright colour that would actually emit that glow. might want to tone it down a bit. keep things simple and straight, there are places where the glow intersects with other parts of the hud, which could look messy

finally, i think maybe things are a bit too cramped together.

you said to be brutal

Appriciate everyones comments and help, from the "atta-boys" to the "burn-it"'s. They all help get a feel for peoples views.

EDIT: Templar, thats just the script that runs the heads supplied with the engine. The script is somewhere on the forum. The bar doesn't actually move. Each hud is replaced by another hud with a shorter bar. Just like the changing heads deal except it's the whole hud...just makes it look like the bar moves.

I like it,it looks a lot better than the F.E.A.R. hud, which is much too cluttered and brightly coloured, thus clashing with colours in-game.
The only way to tell for sure that this is right is to use it in your game,if it sits nicely with the overall ambience then its all good.
I do like the design of this tho'.

Is it possible to have a vertical health bar instead of horizontal with the health bar script?

Very nice work Loc. It depends what the theme of your game is though. Is your game gonna' be dark, or is it gonna' be full of action, or is it gonna' be...etc.

If your game has a dark / grungy theme, this one works perfectly. For a game more focused on action and less on realism, I think that you should adjust the colors to be more bright.

Thanks for the comments. I appreciate them all.

The health bar can run diagonal if you want. Has nothing to do with anything. It's just 10 of the same image back ground, each with a shorter bar drawn in it.

yeha, I like it!
I think your muted color scheme is much nicer than the fear one, and I like he way the health bar is unobtrusive.

I've been working on a hud too, trying to make it so that the icons etc only appear when neccessary, for example, the health bar only shows up for 10 secs, each time you take damge/health. Same goes for guns and ammo.

I realise that's a scripting thing, as opposed to a graphical thing, but I just thought I'd give you some other input.

Overall it's very nice. I agree with Jon about the glow seeming a little overdone, as the muted central colour doesn't look like it should be emitting a glow. Whatever, looking forward to seeingthis in action, I think that's when we'll best judge it's quality!

Don't want more colors....Like Filya said, going for simplicity as to not distract.

And who emailed whom first trying to tell me how it is? Told ya your best bet was to stay away from me. Email me again and I'll give you more words to peel the paint off your walls. K pumpkin? K.

EDIT: this can actually be locked mods. I've taken the comments and changed whats going to be changed. S4's ok'ed the final, and I'm on to other stuff....no point this taking up front page space.
