The result of an evening at home alone with nothing on TV ... I present Doodleroids (or something).

I still need to iron out a few quirks and add an enemy ship and a high score system but for the most part it is complete ... Enjoy

[Edit] The biggest quirk being the collision detection. It's not so good. I bought eXtends yesterday thinking I would be able to use its pixel perfect collision but unless I have overlooked it, there doesn't seem to be support for sprite offsets with eXtends making it close to useless for my needs.

Great job, Scraggle.

I only had one problem -- the game suffered a Runtime Error - Illegal Number at line 510", which happened soon after I started level 2. Otherwise, it was great!

Looks great - I think that it would look more authentic with a scanned page as a backdrop though, maybe using coffee cup rings as planets, but it's great to see quirky games like this being done more and more.

all i can say is, WOW! just amazing scraggle. good job, i love seeing an awesome game like this. it really got me hooked in. Keep up the good work can't wait to see more

very nice but one problem, i lose a ship every time a new level starts..? or is that me just playing badly?

also, i have a suggestion that would make the game absolutely classic:

in the original asteroids there is a warp button right? well what if when you pressed a warp button, a giant pencil came and rubbed the ship out, and scribbled it somewhere else? lol. that would be awesome.

Update your copy of DX. You can also get a pack of DX runtimes if you google for them, this has d3dx_28.dll to d3dx_31.dll and stuff like that - good for maximum compatibility.

@el zilcho: the reason you die every new level is, that the asteroids are placed too near at the spawn point of your ship.
i had the same problem, you just have no chance to escape.
@scraggle: why not adding 3 seconds spawn-safe-time or a radius around the ship where asteroids may not spawn?
appart from this the game has a great style and i enjoyed to play it

Crikey! A suprisingly positive response for the product of a single evening.

I like the suggestions that have come forth and will try to impliment them in the next build. I can't do any coding this weekend because I have got friends coming over. So, sometime next week I will see what I can do.

I have already implimented VanB's suggestions. I had half an hour spare this morning so, I scanned a piece of paper and a coffee stain. I did them seperately so that the coffee stain planet can appear in different places.

I also drew an enemy ship with red biro and got it following several waypoints. No bullet firing or collision detection on it yet though.

I like the idea of a pencil and eraser for hyperspace. That might make it in.

The no-spawn radius is a must. That will get in when I have chance.

A work collegue suggested that the ship could fall into the ring binder holes. That's a maybe. I don't think it will add much to the game play.

High Score charts (maybe online) will be added and support for joystick play. After that I think we can call it a finished product

i like the page, the coffee stain, and the pencil and eraser idea. i love the idea of falling into the ringbinder holes too this is a masterpiece...hehe

well as far as i know, a drawing moving is illogical
its a game anything can happen...and almost everything is illogical

Maybe instead of dying when you fall into the rings, they could be like black holes that transport you to a random other hole. Kind of like a last resort if you're cornered.

That would be sweet. I have an idea. Maybe when you die, the paper gets crumpled up or something, maybe thrown into a garbage can. It would take a bit of work though.

woah! Awesome!

I have some suggestions:

*Make the bullets a little bigger (I think they are a little too small)

*Rotate a bit faster, its too slow.

*Animate everything, so it looks more like a drawing than a cutout. (like that effect you get when you hand draw an animation, and the drawings are a little different each time.

Anyways, very good job!

Looks cool Scraggle - I like the idea of scrunching up the paper at the end of the game too. Perhaps using an irregular plain with a bone structure would work, would be the cherry on the cake so to speak.
