Z_val=mousez()

mousez() will return the Z value of cursor

the mouse moves in Z direction only when you use scroll wheel. So use it and then check the mousez() value.

Well, if you're using Dark Basic Professional you can use the PICK SCREEN command combined with the GET PICK VECTOR commands in order to get a 3D coordinate... (Type PICK SCREEN, highlight it, and press F1 for details)

PICK SCREEN Screen X,Screen Y,Distance into screen

He means these commands:
get pick vector x
get pick vector y
get pick vector z

Hit F1 for the help, go to index, and search for get pick vector.
