Dark GDK / Dark GDK work with free compilers?

Don't have Dark GDK but would like to order it. Has anyone been able to use Dark GDK with MinGW? (the free C++ compiler which is part of GNU GCC). I don't want to spend a bunch of money on a VC++ NET compiler. I much prefer C++ over BASIC.

It doesn't work on any of the GCC compilers. It does work with Visual C++ express though, which is free but rather large (IIRC, you need the compiler, the Platform SDK and the October 2006 DirectX SDK or later)
