In efforts to maintain a high framerate but be able to have large outdoor scenes with lots of buildings, some of them massive, I have cracked it.

See the screenshot and notice that not only is the building really large, but it also has lots of windows, what's more my FPS remains at its maximum FPS of 33

The reason there is no hit in frame rate is because the geometry of that building is extremely simple. I see about 6 polygons in that screenshot.

Yeah just box a box (6 polys) and the works in all the texture.

So you two should be able to reproduce the same, cool I look forward to seeing your screenshots. I'll be adding more buildings with varied architecture, next up I'm creating a skyscraper, I want to see if a sniper can shoot at the player from there.

Created a skyscraper of sorts, can only build up to 19 levels but from the ground that looks high enough. Positioned a sniper on the roof and he began to shoot at me, see screenshot showing the skyscraper and additional view of the sniper.

Framerate remained at 33

I need some contrasting buildings now.

What size are your textures on those buildings?

Theyre probably 512x512 - Theyre just normal segments/textures.

So are the buildings made out of segments or is it an entity?

They will be segments - There are lines where you can see the different shades of brickwork (Almost like layers)

Hmmm....I'm not making the connection here. How would there be only 6 polys if the building is made out of segments?

Actually 6 polys would only be 3 sides of a square....as when it's collapsed every poly triangulates. >,< ......A cube always ends up 12 polys in game.

Although that´s not really matching to your things, i have another trick to make a "big city feeling": You can make "buildings" beyond the area the player can walk on. that can´t be said, just look at the screenies.
(on this screenie it looks like a real building)

i´ve written "jhon" the wrong way on purpose

@Komet: Looks great; It would also look good to have some windows modeled open; so that you could have snipers shooting through windows

@Jhon: No offense; but that looks nothing like a building; It looks like it's flat (which i'm presuming it is.) You could add one segment going back to make it look like buildings off-area

@ tyrano man, cheers good idea, I will try to add open windows to some buildings before I finish creating my game.

@ Nalle Karhu, sorry no, I need to keep some custom things for use in my game, if all our games look the same then that would be a bit pathetic.

Building a low-poly city is extremely useful.
Many thanks!

Don't mention it. Who's building you a low-poly city though?
