Your technique is fine, but really I'm not sure what method that is.

I think pixel art needs to be about half that size, and more pixelly, that actually looks more like the more modern looking cartoon art, but without the smoothing. Like if you drew him big then scaled down to that size so the AA kicked in, then it would be that cartoon style.

He looks great, but I think that's a unique style, I'd like to see what you can do with half that resolution, I have a soft spot for pixel art, I think he'd look cool if more pixelly, but that's just me, I like the personality that can be expressed with just a few pixels. Photoshop is not a good package for pixel art though, Paint is actually better, or a very early version of PaintShopPro (v3 is recommended as a good pixel art package).

@ Van B

thanks for the comments, i guess you're right about the size,

is this better? you said to make it half the size, but ive actually gone and made it 1/4 the size

IMO that little fella looks great, it's the sorta look I'd go for if I was making a platform game, because it would be so quick to animate. I can imagine him waving his arms like a mad man, running back and forth along platforms, and looking like he's having a great time doing it. I guess your probably too young to remember, but he reminds me a bit of an old game called Rodland, he'd fit right in that. If your gonna animate him, I would suggest making his hands a little bigger, it's best to make hands quite obvious when they're holding items, especially if they're moving fast.

thanks for the kind words van b. I might well make a platformer as a first real project someday, but the chef will be an enemy i think.

dyou think a 2d platformer needs to be fullscreen? or should it just be small, like 800x600?

I think fullscreen is always better, unless it's a strategy or puzzle game, then really your full attention has to be on the game in hand.

Using 3D plains instead of sprites would be good for performance, but also using 3D let's you have neat effects really easily, like parallax scrolling and decent particles. I think you should definitely go for it.

yeah but then you also get problems like perspective, it can actually look more 2d like cutout paper in 3d, unless i can change the fov somehow? also, ive tried putting a 2d image on a plane, and the image quality turns out terrible, at least in 2d you get the exact pixel quality of the image you put in.. i'm guessing. unless there is a way of fixing this too?

but thats true about the performance and the particles, unless i draw out my effects.

i'll see when i come to making a game

thanks for the advice.

I thinks it's possible to get 3D looking exactly like 2D, it's really a case of getting the camera Z position right to suit a set resolution. If I have time I'll do a test, see if I can get 3D exactly like pasting the image. It is possible to change the FOV, in fact I did that with my breakout clone recently, but as long as you use the same zdepth on each object it should be fine, it's mostly just using the right image load and transparency flags.
